I think that the main problem with this video is that it is impossible to explain Lutheran or any other theology in 90 seconds. One of the areas of confusion seems to be in regard to "saint and sinner." The theologians from both the Lutheran and Calvinist camps agreed that we are justified by God's grace alone through faith alone on account of Christ alone. Faith unites us with Christ such that we give Him our sin, our brokenness, and all our failures, and He covers us with His perfect righteousness as if it were our own. It is the forgiveness of our sin along with His righteousness imputed to us that is the basis of our justification. Having been justified (declared righteous), we begin the lifelong process of sanctification. However, because of our sinful nature, we don't reach a state of sinless perfection in this lifetime. Thus, in terms of our justification, we are righteous, but in terms of our sanctification, even though we are moving in the right direction, we won't achieve perfection in this lifetime, so we are still sinners. This doctrine of "simul justus et peccator" was essential to understanding the theology of the Protestant Reformation, but I think it has been largely lost from American evangelicalism. Also, I don't think Pr Weber did a good job of explaining this. While it is true that all of us are a mixture of good and bad, our own goodness will never be good enough to reconcile us to a holy God. Only the gift of Christ's perfect righteousness, imputed to us through faith, will accomplish that.
@curtisgriesel95039 жыл бұрын
sarco64 Great points. Nadia doesn't give a full discourse on Luther's theology. But I think she does a good job of highlighting the major points on which Luther differs from Calvin, an on which mainline Protestants differ from Evangelicals.
@sarco649 жыл бұрын
Curtis Griesel I think that on the doctrine of justification, (the doctrine upon which the Church stands or falls, according to Luther), Luther and Calvin were largely in agreement. We are justified by grace alone through faith alone on account of Christ alone. It seems that today's Evangelicals no longer agree with this. The original Protestants believed that God justifies us freely by His grace. The message from Evangelicals seems to be that God provides us with what we need to justify ourselves, if we will only diligently apply ourselves to the task. If I were given the assignment of explaining Lutheran theology in 90 seconds, I would focus on justification by grace alone through faith alone on account of Christ alone.

I think summarizing "what it means to be Lutheran" is very difficult. You can parrot stuff Luther and other reformers said, but in the end different aspects of Lutheranism resonate to different people. If you want to tell me it is the tradition and the music, you can shove it. It is absolutely everything Nadia said, plus (IMHO) all the other dualities you can come up with. For example I see Lutheranism best exemplifies that we are both spiritual and physical, that we are both individual believers and part of something much much greater, that Christ died for you and for everyone, that we acknowledge both the ancient and the modern, and that we are both sinner and saint.

Yes we are saved by grace, Thank God, and no we're not perfect but sin is not to be taken lightly either. Choosing to live in repetitive sin, rather than repent, shows we have a love for the world and not a love for Jesus Christ. 1 John 2 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 1 Cor 10 21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. Romans 6 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Grumpy Lutheran Hey Brother! Love your vibe and attitude. It's so refreshing. I think I know what you mean when you say no one has it completley right. That is why even so many of us who worship the same God, following the same word end up arguing over it (which I try to avoid doing =) because it isnt easy but that is what is so wonderful about what Jesus did in sending us the gift of the Holy Spirit. He gladly sends discernment and wisdom for those who humbly and sincerly ask him for it and there is a lot here that strikes me with caution. We are at a time where the Devil has infiltrated the church and the word of God on such a grand scale. We all fall short of the glory of God and will never be 'worthy' but we are to strive to be set apart as Holy, led by the Holy Spirit and something about what she says strikes ideas of conformity, submitting to carnality, and a relaxed acceptance of sin and things unholy. It's sooo important for us to remember to be humble, loving, meek, kind and compassionate. But at the same time diligent in following the word of God, serving Him and remaining obedient. Living in this world, it's hard not to slip into luke-warmness... VERY hard but it's rampant! There are so many who refuse to repent and strive for growth and change away from that which the Lord says is wicked. This type of Lukewarm christianity has spread like a virus that grows and so many are losing their crown, their salvation that God himself warns us to stay steadfast in protecting. In Revelations, the Lord God himself says, if you are lukewarm, I will vomit you out of my mouth. That verse has got to be one of the most frightening. But the conventional church doesnt talk about these type of scriptures which is very sad because people need to know that yes our God is a God of mercy and love, but he is also a God who delves deep into the hearts of many and he says as well, that our hearts are wicked. He knows very well whats in our hearts and this isnt anything for us to be proud of either for we are all sinful by nature. Our hearts must be replaced with a fleshly heart, a pure spirit and that comes through accepting Jesus and becoming entirely new sacrificing your self and gladly embracing with boldness your new Holy self. It's not to say we won't fail. We will because our flesh is still sinful and we live in a sinful world, but we get back up, repent, ask for continued guidance and we keep running this race, seeking that which is Holy, sacrificing our earthly and fleshly desires. There is no greater form of worship than obedience because this is when we truly give it ALL to God. It's no easy feat, but it's certainly more than worth striving for.

Not even sinning through their actions anymore, but deeper and deeper layers of "sin" were progressively revealed to them the closer they got to God. There was no end to their struggle to improve in their efforts to seek union with God. "Don't bother trying, nobody improves anyway" has nothing to do with sound Biblical doctrine.

A problem with referring to someone as "troubled" (which she seems to be) is that it can sound uncaring. I don't mean it that way at all. In a separate video this person speaks at some length about terrible childhood hurt and pain. It is a baffling and heartbreaking account. Maybe if I'd had her experiences I'd have an attitude problem too. Or maybe not. I have Evangelical friends with their own deep wounds and ongoing struggles, and they emphasize the gospel. Historians believe that Luther was kind of a bull-in-a-china-closet himself. Could be that more quickly than most people Luther would have looked past tattos and other elements of this person's appearance, as we should too. Luther's central message was God's grace of declaring a guilty sinner as righteous, and that only by his/her trust in Christ for forgiveness of sin. I'm afraid I don't see that emphasis in videos I've seen of this person so far.

An excerpt from Annie Dillard's book "Teaching a Stone to Talk" God does not demand that we give up our personal dignity, that we throw in our lot with random people., that we lose ourselves and turn from all that is not him. God needs nothing, asks nothing, and demands nothing, like the stars. It is a life with God which demands these things. Experience has taught the race that if knowledge of God is the end, then these habits of life are not the means but the condition in which the means operates. You do not have to do these things; not at all. God does not, I regret to inform you, give a hoot. You do not have to do these things - unless you want to know God. They work on you, not on him. You do not have to sit outside in the dark. If, however, you want to look at the stars, you will find that darkness is necessary. But the stars neither require nor demand it.

Lutherans don't promote licentiousness. We acknowledge that as we strive to live in accordance with God's laws, we will never achieve sinless perfection, and thus the righteousness that justifies us is Christ's perfect righteousness imputed to us. As for holiness, people like to quote Hebrews 12:14, "without holiness no one will see the Lord," but wanting to pride themselves in achieving their holiness by their own efforts they ignore Hebrews 10:10, "we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

Problem. Imputed righteous even when we are sinners is very forensic. Declared innocent even though guilty. So imputed justification is like having a bucket of paint poured over us. It's like being justified by faith alone which can be turned into a good word, my faith justifies me so I can be bad cause I got a bargaining chip. Anglicans, particularly high-church Anglo-Catholics, often follow Catholicism and Orthodoxy in believing both man and God are involved in justification. "Justification has an objective and a subjective aspect. The objective is the act of God in Christ restoring the covenant and opening it to all people. The subjective aspect is faith, trust in the divine factor, acceptance of divine mercy. Apart from the presence of the subjective aspect there is no justification. People are not justified apart from their knowledge or against their will...God forgives and accepts sinners as they are into the divine fellowship, and that these sinners are in fact changed by their trust in the divine mercy."[35] Justification, the establishment of a relationship with God through Christ, and sanctification go hand in hand. In historic Anglicanism, the eleventh article of the Thirty-Nine Articles made it clear that justification cannot be earned, "We are accounted righteous before God... not for our own works or deservings".[36] However, certain Anglican theologians (especially Anglo-Catholics) argue for a faith characterized by faithfulness, where good works and the Sacraments play important roles in the life of the Christian believer. (see New Perspective on Paul) This also accords with the plain words of Scripture faith without works is dead. Luther said good works are the fruit of faith. Good enough. But sanctification goes hand in hand with justification, the goal being transformed into the likeness of Christ, not just being a passive recipient of justification.

Lutherans in the ELCA and ELCIC (Canada) are not biblical literalists. We promote scholarly research with regard to the social, religious, economic, political and cultural milieu when it comes to understanding the context of the scriptures in their original setting. I would hope we no longer attribute seizures to demon possession in 2015 and ostracize individuals from public life. In 2015 we understand the medical issue of epilepsy. That is why ELCA and ELCIC Lutherans acknowledge that we are a "REFORMING" Church. God is always teaching us new ways to understand how God works in the world in our context, in this present tense in North America. We are not cut in stone. We flow with the body and blood of the grace of Jesus Christ. - Reverend Leslie Joan Poulin, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC)
@Anon543878 жыл бұрын
That's a vague statement. Some of the comments? Which comments? Still, as general as this is I'll take a stab at it. First of all, unlike the implication of Leslie we do no attribute seizures to demonic possession in the LCMS. We are hardly flat earthers in the LCMS. This could, as you might imagine, turn into a long discussion. The short version is that the ELCA and LCMS do not share a common confessional view of Lutheranism. To my mind, the ELCA and its doctrines are, in a manner of speaking, fuzzy. Comparing the two directly tends to get very abstract and quickly. But compare the LCMS to a denomination that the ELCA is in full communion with, namely the Presbyterian Church. They teach a "double predestination" in that they believe there are people predestined for damnation and others predestined for salvation. No one has been predestined to damnation; we are saved by God's Grace alone, but we are damned by our stubborn nature in sin which might lead us not to accept Christ as our Savoir. This is NOT by God's choice. Presbyterians also put human reason next to God's Scripture as a source of doctrinal authority. The similarity between this and Leslie's second sentence should be apparent. This is contrary to Proverbs 3:5 and thus in un-Biblical. It's not exactly apples to apples, but this also is similar to the Amish/Mennonite idea that we can achieve holiness and the Roman Catholic idea that we cooperate with God for Salvation which attempt to put us on the same level as God and lead to an uneasiness of conscience because even when one is raised being told these things there is that little seed of doubt that we aren't really on the same level as God, and rightly so. This, too, is not Biblical. The contemporaries of Martin Luther said this terrified the conscience. Finally, Presbyterians view the sacraments differently. The Presbyterians view the sacraments as signs or symbols of God's grace, whereas Lutherans view them as actual means of God's grace. So, to wrap this up, consider that to be in full fellowship with another congregation it must not compromise the Scripture's requirement that such fellowship be proclaimed and confessed according to "the whole counsel of God" as seen in Acts 20:27. The ELCA, if not un-Biblical in its approach, is in communion with United Church of Christ,the Reformed Church of America, and the Presbyterian Church all of which do not meet this criteria. I'm concerned to ecumenicalism. It used to be that Protestant congregations would not even have interfaith meetings with Roman Catholics due to the fundamental differences between Catholic doctrine and the Bible, although Roman Catholics are technically Christian despite these doctrinal issues. Presently, we are having interfaith meetings between Christians and Muslims. And that is literally something I can go on about for pages just off the top of my head. That'd both have me here for a long time, not to mention seriously straying from the topic that this started out to be. The succinct and "putting it mildly" version is that I'm highly distrustful of that.

***** Well, anonymous person, you're taking issue with my comment from a year and a half ago. At that time, people were very harshly criticizing the ELCA for allowing women to be pastors. I don't know if you are a pastor, but I am not and honestly have never wanted to be one. I am. however, a woman, so it bothered me a lot to have people--especially obviously non-pastors--who belong to other religious denominations criticize the ELCA to that extreme for having women pastors.

People who are really scared of mysticism often love to make overly simplistic statements on things which are not always so clear, reducing everything to simple mathematical formula. We died with Christ to sin, but we still do the things we hate so there is an inner conflict. Does that mean a simplistic 100% sinner 100% saint and there is no spiritual progress or no choice on our part to let go of life apart from Christ and allow His Spirit to more completely bear His fruit. Some of the anti mystical Lutherans I have heard seem to think that way. It is very impersonal, treats the beautiful perfect love relationship between Christ and the Father and the Spirit who flows out of their Ultimate interdependent relationship (if you interpret passages like John 5:19-20 literally) as an abstraction. Guys, the holy Trinity is what made sense to me in my desperate isolation, not something which needed to be reduced to a mathematical formula. The reason I left Lutheran church Canada and gave up on being Lutheran was there is no Lutheran church in Winnipeg which has a prayer meeting. I need a church which takes prayer seriously; the honor of sharing in Christ's relationship with the Father and allowing their Spirit to do great things through us. This is the only way any church can impact this world. Lutheran empty babble which has nothing to do with the human heart where faith is reduced to a mathematical formula we relate to God as judge whose Son simply died to appease His wrath so we could have a change in legal standing, but no emphasis on real change of heart is what turned me off in this church.

Second, all ELCA pastors must attend seminary. Third, ELCA services ALWAYS include 3 liturgical calendar year scripture readings before the sermon, which the sermon is based off of. But you all can judge this woman on a short video clip? I was raised in a LCMS church and now attend an ELCA church. Stop the hate. She struggled with addiction before becoming a pastor. Other Christians please do not be missenformed...this is nothing close to what Lutherans preach or practice. These are called ELCA Evangelical-Lutherans or as I call them Free-Lutheran or false. I am a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod or LCMS. We hold the believes Luther actually taught such as Christ Deietey, Eucharist, Book of Concord, Luther's small and large catechisms. That doctrine lines up with the biblical teachings that Luther pioneered during the reformation. My point is LCMS Lutherans believe the Bible to be inherent meaning free of error. They proclaim it to be the inspired word of Christ through the disciple ship. In contrast to the ELCA teachings...they believe that the bible to be taken with a grain of salt or to be questioned of it's authority leaning towards the opinion that it isn't God's infallible word. They show this by ordaining openly homosexual pastors. They encourage sodomy. I don't have a problem with homosexuality personally...but I feel as a Christian you should be preaching the truth what the gospel states. You have the right to disagree with it...but u cannot deny it...it clearly says in scripture (thou shall not lie with mankind) or (Marriage is between one man and one woman) that brings me to s further point...ELCA dont believe in sin or confession...if they honestly think Jesus hates sinners there very wrong...hate the sin love the sinner...I feel pity for them. There being lied to and being made to feel sin doesn't exist...there wouldn't be hell then. All we can do is pray for ELCA members so they can come to light.

Sorry, but righteousness was not imputed to Abraham by "faith alone." Ephesians 2:8: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." Note that the verse does NOT say we receive grace just because we *_have_* faith . . . it says *_through_* faith. So, what does _"through_ faith" mean? Hebrews 11:6 shows that _through_ faith we can make a choice: to choose to come to God: "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." It is the _choice_ we make - to come to God - that makes the difference, not just having faith that God is real and that a choice is available! Faith is given to us to call us. Question is, will we answer the call? Consider Abraham. Abraham was promised blessings if he would leave home and journey to the promised land. Through faith he chose to obey (see Hebrews 11:8 and Gen 26:5) and then received the blessings. Would he have received the blessings by having faith in the promises but staying home? Of course not! That would have been dead faith, faith without works, faith without obedience. Abraham's "works" was his obedience. James wrote about Abraham: "Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only" (James 2:22-24). Those three verses from James show that _true believing is more than "faith alone"!_ Did Abraham receive the blessings, and imputed righteousness, by "faith alone," by just thinking God's promises were true? No! He was a _believer._ In the true and complete sense of the word _believe,_ he obeyed, he acted on his faith. His obedience made his faith alive and "perfect" or complete. Do we receive saving grace by "faith alone," thinking this or that is true? No! Jesus is "the author of eternal salvation unto all them that _obey_ Him" (Hebrews 5:9). And who is it that receives the holy spirit . . . is it those who have "faith alone"? No! "And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that _obey_ him" (Peter, in Acts 5:32). So, how do we obey? The apostle Paul explained: "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30). We obey by repenting, choosing to come to God, as we read earlier in Hebrews 11:6. Through the ransom Jesus made available on the cross, His life for ours, we can be redeemed from the death penalty we have earned (Romans 6:23) for our past sins . . . IF we'll choose to turn from living apart from God, to turn from sin that earned us the death penalty in the first place. Without repentance, we remain unredeemed from the death penalty earned for past sins . . . and we will surely perish in death for those sins. That's why Jesus warned "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5). Those who preach "faith alone" are misrepresenting Jesus and deceiving many. After His resurrection Jesus appeared to His disciples. Notice what He told them to preach: "Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that *_repentance and remission of sins_* should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem" (Luke 24:45-47). Let's go back to Ephesians 2:8 and include verses 9 and 10: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." "Works" means different things according to the context. The "works" Paul referred to in Ephesians 2:9 was "good works" or good deeds as seen in verse 10. Neither these, nor "the works of the law" (circumcision, etc, from Paul's letters to the Romans and Galatians) can ever "earn" grace or justification. Abraham's "works" was another type of works: his simple obedience through faith. Abraham's obedience made his faith alive and complete, making him a believer. For that, righteousness was imputed to him and he received the promised blessings. Those who abide in a relationship with Jesus are becoming "his workmanship" (v. 10): the relationship with Him "yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them that are exercised thereby" (Hebrews 12:11; Rev 3:19). As they become the "new man" Paul wrote about they are learning to keep the commandments. And they produce good works because it is becoming their nature to do so. Those good works in no way earn justification, but they are evidence of faith made alive - and of the holy spirit received - through obedience.

@0.57 I dont think simultaneously sinner and saint means what you think it means as if someone flip flops between good and evil like a fish out of water or something. Perhaps one would say they left a trail of destruction prior to conversion and have only just begun to pick up the pieces, but they would still be more or less wrong, I believe saint Paul had stated that when he wishes to do good he still does evil in Romans. This doesnt mean that it is impossible to obey Jesus just that we are acutely aware of when we do and when we don't and unless we are more advanced than Paul (we aren't) chances are we are usually more often than not, not preforming at our best except here and there (if one were to accurate exegetate Matthew 7) us being 2,000 years later in a ever progressively morally degenerative society. On that note I truly cant tell what might qualify as a truly good work. I dont believe it would be donating to goodwill. Trying hard to be a law abiding citizen doesnt compute either. I would imagine it would mean being exemplarary but then I would be damning myself for not being modest and humble. Further citation is needed at this juncture. Shucks. How truly complicated.

Luther focused on the fact that the Holy Scriptures is the only book that teaches about eternal life and therefore you should despair of your own reasoning and understanding. With them you will not attain eternal life, but on the contrary, your presumptuousness will plunge you and others with you out of heaven (as happened to Lucifer) into the abyss of hell. But kneel down and pray to God with real humility and earnestness, that he through his dear Son and the Holy Scriptures may give you his Holy Spirit, who will enlighten you, lead you, and give you understanding.
