People don't realize that Luther had been toiling in the entertainment industry for 12 years and was 30 years old when this song was released. Sometimes success can be immediate, other times it's living in obscurity for years before you get that break. You can have the greatest voice in the world and may never get that chance. Never Too Much was 12 years in the making from his time performing on the first season of Sesame Street, to the misses with his group Luther, to writing commercial jingles and performing with groups you've never heard, like Mascara, to his first taste of success with the group Change. This is Luther's time to shine, and once he got the opportunity, the rest, is history.

Back on 2001 when I was living in NYC. There WAS A MUSICIAN playing a guitar getting off thr 6th train on UES. my buddy and I leaving the subway, stopped and I knew only the first verse. And he let me join in and sing. HE was on point and I had my moment (as as a chubby Italian suit) at 34 years old.. to sing with him. One of the best 2 -3 minutes of my life. We stopped folks exiting the train as they were like..WTF?!!! I will never forget that tiny moment in time in my life. That man ALWAYS had a smile on his face when he performed. I was there in 2001 at Madison sqaure garden. It was the MJ 30th anniversary concert. I worked for a big record label there as an A&R rep and joked to my boss to not give me a bonus that year, just get me into the concert. He did-it was life changing. No one had a clue Luther was gonna be there. All dude had to do was belt out a note and the whole damn crowd made me deaf for 2 weeks. Everyone knew it was him. Probably the most recognizable R&B voice of all time. The amount of talent that night was absolutely unbelievable.

Patti Labelle vouched for him early in his career. Miss Patti told the story of how they met on Andy Cohen's show. Apparently Luther was an accountant or something like that at the time but he was a massive Patti fan so he brought a rack of women's gowns and snuck into the theater where Patti was performing, claiming he was a stylist and then he wormed his way to Patti's room and they became instant best friends.
