I agree that marriage is not something that you absolutely need to do as a couple (my parents have been together forever 30+ years and never married) but as a Lesbian living in Canada, a place where I can freely do that with basically the same rights as a straight couple, I really wanna have that ceremony one day. To me (of course personally) it’s like paying tribute to all the ones before me who wished they could have done that but where never able and I should consider myself lucky that I’m able to marry who I want :)

Yeah, it's like it's one thing for you to be able to *choose* not to get married and a very different thing for you to not *be allowed* to do so.

something people forget is the legality of marriage. when you are married to someone, if something happens to you in the hospital, your spouse is the one in charge of your medical decisions. gays during the aids crisis did not have that. their parents were the ones who had full control, people who were often kicking out and disowning their children for having aids. their partners could do nothing as their parents signed away on anything to kill their gay kids and bury them with their birth names for those who went by others. it also meant that every possession that was theirs became their parents. marriage is also impacts your taxes in the us, with married people paying less taxes in the hopes that it helps the economy/pays for their children/etc. that means any single/gay person who cannot marry is losing more money than straight married people. although this is no longer the reality for gays in the usa, remember that disabled people still cannot marry without losing all their benefits and are basically subject to everything i mentioned above.

@@hutao4671 ​ ​ i’m glad you brought this up bcs it’s very important to remember this. i’ve seen many lgbt people ask why we even fought for marriage when it was an institution made for straight religious people but if anything gay people need the support from marriage more than anybody. the ability to have a legally recognized family member outside of your birth family is so so valuable.

While they’re not the best considering who our governor (trash) is, they don’t “preach” homophobia and racism, they’re ignoring the topics completely. Which can be seen from the whole “can’t say Gay” bill and all the books that have been banned dealing with race, LGBTQ+, or have authors that are in those groups. It’s an authoritative censorship, still trash but yeah no preaching of hate yet. (no hate, just frustration living in florida)

You guys, should consider Scandinavian countries, we are generally very accepting, I’m from Denmark, we have the longest history of legal commitments/marriage in the lgbtq+ community. And most of us speak English as a second or third language. Of course you’d still have to learn the local language 😂 but children seems to pick it up really quick, and adults are fine with speaking English. That part might actually be a bigger challenge compared to being accepted as a gay couple here. In my experience if someone says something bad about lgbtq+ or is rude about it everyone in the room will give them a mean stare, at the very least, if not directly scold them. Of course we still have old people who say whatever they feel like, and religious groups who have their own opinions but if they know what’s good for them they’ll only share those opinions behind closed doors. When I was a kid, being lgbtq+ was something people whispered about but I never knew anyone who was lgbtq+ (at least not openly), nowadays practically 1 in 3 kids will say they are lgbtq+ and nobody dares to tell them otherwise. After all they wouldn’t want to be labeled as ‘problematic’ or ‘homophobic’ so even if not all of those kids are actually queer they’ll let them figure that out for themselves😂

I don't think the answer is always just to move out of SK. In order for things to change there has to be brave people (like the first people in america for example) to expand what society's perception of "family" is, people staying is the best way for it to finally start getting normalized... however if health, safety, and happiness is really being jeopardized then it would unfortunately be better to move out

this is true but also these things take time. the legislation for a same sex couple to be able to marry each other and hv kids could take years. and if the couple want kids not everyone can fight for it in time for it to still be possible for them. i live in korea, and even just officially changing the aging system from Korean (birth = 1yo) to the international aging system, they are having a hard time rolling this out. a lot of older koreans are hard to convince and getting them onboard is very difficult. the reality is the fight will be long, if same sex couples want to achieve where they can be seen and function properly as a family in society within the next 10 years, they won't be able to do that except outside of korea

I think South Korea will take a very long time to change their stance on same sex marriage, particularly because Koreans don't seem to be very vocal about social issues and rallying for change. I could be wrong, but a lot of the gay Koreans I've watched online just seem to accept that they can't be married and that society treats them badly, rather than fighting against it and building a community together and rallying for change. Also it seems most straight people in Korea have very little or no opinion on LGBT issues so they don't really consider themselves "allies" like the majority of left leaning people in the US. As much as it sucks to say, without allies fighting alongside us it's very difficult for minorities to make change happen on our own. Hopefully with Taiwan, Thailand, and eventually maybe India working towards changes to marriage it will start a wave of other Asian countries following.

Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage back in 2019. That does make me wonder why so many Korean couples featured here think of moving to the US, rather than Taiwan where the language is significantly more similar (easier to learn) and there's stronger anti-discrimination laws

i just want to add that social change is really hard to predict - change can sometomes happen really fast - and it is hard to know why or how - just keep being yourself & keep trying and plan as though the change you want will soon come! I am 68 yrs old & have seen social acceptance take forever for one thing & happen in a snap for something else - right now the broad acceptance of gay & lesbian couples among young people is still very surprising to me - & so wonderful! I was with my girlfriend for 28 years but she died before marriage was declared legal in the US, but we were lucky to be able to be very open about our relationship

Do NOT go to FL or the south. As a gay WOC, I promise you’ll be safer and happier in someplace like WA state or California. NY is okay too, NH okay. If you go south or towards the Bible Belt, just be aware that it’s much more difficult to be queer, let alone a POC, even possibly unsafe. Yes, the possibility to be targeted is present everywhere in the US, but your chances of safety and acceptance are higher in places like I mentioned before. Happy Pride month from Seattle, WA!

As a Floridian, hearing them say Florida is a relatively gay-friendly region of the US made me nervous chuckle... there are a lot of gay-friendly places here, but the state government is unfortunately quite conservative and anti-gay, so a lot of our state laws are pretty homophobic. Not long ago, a teacher here was arrested for showing her students a Disney movie that had a gay couple in it, because "that's not allowed in public schools". Apparently, San Francisco, California is the most LGBTQ+ friendly city in the US. I know this video is a year old, but that may be something for these ladies to consider before moving to Florida, if they haven't already. (It's sad that these kinds of things even need to be considered... I do hate my state's politicians...)

My sister and her wife got married in September. She was adopted from China but, grew up in the States. My hubby is from Korea, he was also adopted. We live in Washington State, the Western side of the State is very open and accepting. More so that Florida, the don't say gay law is horrible but, to each their own. To any gay couples in Korean please reach out to your community and find your people. I hope for change.

Aww this was so sweet. Well, you guys can come and get married here in Europe too. Who knows, maybe (correct me if I'm wrong) in Thailand, New Zeeland, Australia, you can do so too? Getting married and building a family in one of those countries? If so, it's closer to home right? I hope you can make it. Indeed, if Korea is still not okay with single mom's it will take long until it's okay with us 🏳️‍🌈 as people, couples or families. My country was in that spot decades ago and nowadays it's so different, way more welcoming and we have the same rights as everyone else, regardless of more conservative views from some people. You can also raise the children for a few years abroad and then return. They will learn a language and a different way of living and then they can return to Korea and enjoy their time in both places. :) (Portugal, EU)

Idk why but i feel jenually soo happy whenever i see a gay couples or leasbin couples.. they only made me belive that true love still exists.. although my besties are leasbins and are in a very cute and beautiful couple... I ever sow.. idk how relationships works.. cuse i was never been an any relationship and still im not... I honestly never meet anyone who honest with me .. specially boys .. sorry but it's just my personal experience..

Wishing that all their wishes will come true one day in the same way they want it to be. And the way of love in their eyes when they look at each other shows that love is always love. It's sad that a lot of people can't open up their feelings the way they want. But trust me , world is changing and the perspective is changing. Let's hope atleast our near future generations to be open minded and have the tendency of acceptance. And I wish them all goodness and happiness of the world
