I remember when the show started August 1971 - we would rush home from the country club to catch it. Wow, miss those days when television mattered.

Being a Brit, and born a little after this (and not sure if it was actually broadcast over here), Sonny just makes me think of Airplane II and "I'll keep it with me!!" Very polished show, and interesting to see a bearded Steve Martin with long hair and only a bit of grey in it 😅

Art Carney was performing comedy professionally on major network radio shows, from the time he was a teenager. There's film footage of him, aged 17, doing a comedy spot on a show.

In the World War II segment, the Irish soldier is Ted Ziegler; the Brooklyn Jewish one is Peter Cullen (the show's announcer, and the future voice of Optimus Prime, Eeyore, and many more cartoon characters); the Naïve Farmboy one is Tom Solari (brother of 1950s Mousketeer Jay-Jay, and now a very powerful member of Scientology); and the Black one is Freeman King.

I remember seeing this live on tv and at 62 I can say that Cher and Barbra strysand were never conciderd beautiful but voices were good. And here we are 2024 and I'm still.right!!

I hate the way her eyebrows were shaped and how they did her make-up. Made her look older than she actually was.

That was high-glam make-up in the early 1970s.

@@johnsegreti8367 Well, of course, beauty is subjective, so ok... To me, her beauty peak was 1969 and 1975 when her eyebrows had a normal shape and size, and her make up was light, complimenting her facial features. As I said, those thin cabaret-ish eyebrows and the make up she used during that time (1971-1974) made her look older.

You've never seen "The Captain & Tennille" or "Donny & Marie". They were far, far cheesier. But the worst was in the 1980s: "Pink Lady and Jeff".
