I am an American who has been living in Luxembourg for the last 6 years now. It’s nice to see people come here and experience it since it’s often not on anyones radar. Just want to add that you said the main language is Luxembourgish - however there are 3 “national” languages : Luxembourgish, French & German. Naturally, Luxembourgish is spoken widely - but I would counter that French is more prevalent (though that depends highly on what part of Luxembourg you live in). English is widely spoken, but largely just in the capitol, which is where most expats live. I live in a small border town called Grevenmacher - on the German border. German is the main language here, followed closely by Luxembourgish and then Portuguese. Expats make up just under half of the population of the country - but in the capitol, we are largely the majority. Also, don’t be deceived by its size - Luxembourg is the birthplace of the EU. It’s big in history, both recent and ancient. Great video 👍

Actually luxembourg has only one national language which is luxembourgish. French and german (and luxembourgish) are defined as administrative languages.

The stone read: stone in honor of Goethe, which was erected on November 3, 1935 by the Luxembourg student association. A bronze image of the "Goethe head" is attached to the front of the monument. The following words of the poet are engraved on the back: "Here is so much grandeur combined with grace, so much seriousness combined with loveliness, that one would wish that Poussin had used his wonderful talent in such rooms."

The Monument of Remembrance, also known as Gëlle Fra, was opened in 1923 as a memorial dedicated to all the citizens who volunteered during World War I. Situated in Constitution Square, it stands as a 21 meter-tall obelisk, and features a bronze statue of the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, dramatically holding out a wreath. Two other figures at the foot of the obelisk represent the soldiers of Luxembourg; one is dead, and the other is mourning his compatriot. This statue strongly conveys the sense of sadness and loss felt by the people of Luxembourg during the war, whilst still representing the freedom which rises up through the misery and pain. It is an enthralling and thought-provoking monument to visit whilst in the city. The Battle of Imjin river was battle in Korea. It is dedicated to the thousands of Luxembourgers who volunteered for service in the armed forces of the Allied Powers during both World Wars and the Korean War.

At 22:31 of the video, there is the Britannia Pub. It’s owned by an English man and many British ex pats meet up there In Luxembourg. I think there is more foreigners in Luxembourg than the natives.

The percentage of foreigners was about 47 percent for the country in 2021. Luxembourg-City is another matter with 70 percent (of 125.000) and more than 140 nationalities. There are, in total, eleven counties/communities in Luxembourg with more foreigners than natives.

I have great memories of Luxembourg. Grew up close to the boarder on the German side and frequently went to Luxembourg with my parents, e. g. to buy coffee, cigarettes and petrol (cheaper there). Always enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the trilinguality (Luxembourgish, French, German), which gives the country a very international vibe. Luxembourg city is a bit more francophone than the rest of the country. Enjoy your stay in Europe!!

Nice walk around the city. Another half hour’s walk toward the airport would have taken you near the American Battle of the Bulge cemetery in Hamm where about 5,100 are buried, including General Patton. Luxembourg got invaded twice in the war-May 1940 and December 1944 and paid the price.

Great video. I went to Luxembourg back in the 80s with my family and I remember it made a big impression on me too. It's a shame you couldn't get inside the battlements and other fortifications as they are extensive and a lot of fun to explore. The bit you saw was just a tiny part, as I recall.

At school in 70 s we were taught basic geography of the world. As I travelled in later year I found things weren’t always as we were taught. For example we were taught that they spoke French in Belgium and Luxembourg. When I got to the likes of Luxembourg I like yourself found things somewhat a bit different. Hence it’s always great to travel and experience things. I took a train one time from Trier in Germany to Luxembourg City. I was told many Portuguese settled in Luxembourg. Seemingly good wages and standard of living. I heard many good salaries for people working in banks and EU jobs. Great to see your walk around. Thanks.

It's all true. My schoolmates are mostly people with Portuguese heritage. About the people speaking French is also true. However, if you start speaking Luxembourgish first, you might find people who speak it. As for me, I always start with Luxembourgish, but most people reply in French (South of the country near France)

My grandfather and son went to Lucembourg on a camping trip a couple of years ago. They had a great time. When you have time visit some of the old countryside castles and surrounding nature. It doesn't get more "old Europe" than that. It's like you are walking through some medieval movie.

Luxembourg is small but the food is so good there. It's hearty like German food but they also use French cooking techniques, particularly in the sauces and butter and cremes.

Beautiful clean little country, the HQ of a few major Global corporations such as Amazon are there. Many people work there and commute back to Belgium/Germany/France due to the high cost of living in the Duchy. Along with many EU institutions and European colleges you'll find English is spoken by almost everyone... Though during your travels @Gabriel you should think about listening to some basic lessons in French :)

So a bit of info on the WWI and WWII monument, it's actually the gold statue of the woman at the top. It was a WWI monument and was hidden/lost during the German occupation. It was hidden to avoid the Germans from stealing it, but the person who stole it died and it was lost for many years. She was found in 1980 when they were doing building work and she was put back on her pedestal. She represents Luxembourgish freedom.

I was even considering moving there from Eastern Europe. There were many opportunities to get a job there in institutions of EU. Visitied it a few times, loved the national mix there and size of the country. However i didn t like the weather and missed some coast line:) . You can t have it all. They used to have the cheapest petrol in Europe for a long time. Surprised and not surprised that it looks like a ghost city :(

I remember years ago driving along a stretch of road that formed the border between Belgium and Luxembourg, forest on the Belgian side and petrol station after petrol station on the Luxembourg side. Alcohol and tobacco were cheaper there too.

Was in Luxembourg (back in the late 70s) to get a Eurail card, good for travelling all over Europe (except Luxembourg). I remember the tall bridge and the houses in the valley, but not much else. My cousin lives there; maybe it's time to revisit ...

Gabe you should treat yourself to a meal in a Michelin-starred restaurant when in Europe! A set lunch is sometimes almost affordable. I went to one 35 years ago in France and it remains in my memory as an incredible experience.

i was there in 1994, did a day trip from Paris. I bet it has not changed much in that time. I remember the casemates that were interesting and the views of the ravines. I think there was a main street named after George Patton from WWII. i would imagine it was related to his drive to Bastogne, in Belgium during WWII! Battle of the Bulge. I also remember a museum with many coins that was interesting! Ill be in Paris the coming summer..so maybe ill do another side trip!

If I remember rightly, mostly French is spoken in Luxembourg City. Awesome city! A real hidden gem. I loved the casemates, old town (Grund) and the National Museum of Art and History, which was incredible, seemed to be more artefacts than art, I really recommend that!

A more informal word would be "Moien", some sort of abbreviation of Germany's "Guten Morgen". But it is true that French is very common in Luxembourg-City, mostly due to the fact that French is one of three national languages and there are a lot of commuters from France in Belgium working in the City.

Also it is a shame that the french frontaliers don’t say moien or eddi, not even after 30 years working in lux. They do it on purpose.
