For me, due to the nature of Xenoblade 2's gameplay and the focus on the relationship between Blade and Driver, I tend to consider the protagonists of 2 to be BOTH the main driver and blade of each game. Same rule applies for Lora and Jin. Since Torna was originally going to be a main-game chapter discussing the events of Jin's backstory, I feel confident in calling Mythra a side character since she's taking a backseat narratively after everything that would've happened just prior in Xenoblade 2 if Torna was added as intended before being DLC-ified.

I wouldn't call even Pyra a protagonist. There's only one, and that is Rex. Rex is the one it focuses on and starts on, and Pyra isn't there in the beginning either. She's an important character, but she's far from the protagonist. As for Torna, I think Jin in the protagonist since he is the focus, and the story ends with him and his narrative. I don't believe in there being two protagonists with very rare exceptions where there Isn't a clear protagonist such as Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

I highly disagree with Mio being a protagonist. Noah I think is clearly the protagonist of the story. The story begins and ends with his narrative and perspective. Mio is one of the two main focuses sure, but she's not a protagonist. The story doesn't focus on her. The only moment where you get a narrative from Mio is the end of chapter 5.

If Mythra is a protag, Pyra is without question. She split herself in half to protect herself after trauma. Pyra's arc is insanely important to Mythra's, and Mythra's in 2 affects Pyra's as well. Based system rep, but important to note that the way this works you kinda HAVE to count both if you're counting Mythra.

A funny thing about Xc2, is that the game is essentially about Rex realizing he WASN"T the main character of that story. Like, his whole thematic arc is figuring out that Pyra and Mythra were the actual main characters and that his job was to support their story, and not the other way around. In fact its actually a sort of inversion of xc1. Shulk's death technically occurs before Xc1 starts, but from a structural standpoint, he doesn't really die until Dickson shoots him near the end. Pyra/Mythra are given the protagonist's death: the heroic sacrifice at the end of the story, rewarded by biblical-esque resurrection. Rex is given the more typical supporting love interest death, occurring at the very start of the story as the inciting incident and being revived to serve as support for Pyra/Mythra's larger story, very similarly to Fiora. From a structural Standpoint, Pyra and Mythra are the actual protagonists of that story and Rex is their supporting Love interest and deuteragonist. In direct inversion to Shulk's role as Protagonist and Fiora's role as supporting love interest and psuedo-dueteragonist.

You can say that Rex is actually the Savior of the entire Xenoblade universe because without his harem everything would've been doomed. Without Mio things would've went way different with Noah and there wouldn't be Matthew and Na'el, nor Glimmer. Probably Alpha at some point would manage to fulfill his plan, and the Ouroboros would never have defeated Moebius Rex was the true MVP

Posting this before i see the video: my hot take is that Lin from XCX is at least a protagonist of the game, if not the main character. She has a lot of central meaning to the themes of the game, does all the narration of the game, and has closer connections and vibes of a main character. Of course she's not the primary mascot of the game, so to speak, but narratively I think this fits. Can't wait to have this weird take not justified by the video! About Pied Piper: I've had a short talk about this with Forrest a couple days ago when he was sending me new images for for my fan recreation of Pied Piper. He said that in his opinion, Jan is not the main protagonist of Pied Piper, but actually Melisse is. I would still argue, that the game is more about Jan's backstory, but have to agree a little, that she is the protagonist at the start of the game as well as at the end. If you're wondering what all these names are, Melisse is the leading character in your first playable party in Pied Piper and is the founder of Scientia, the anti-U.M.N. group you know from A Missing Year and Xenosaga episode III. Forrest or フォレスト is the fan mangaka, who made the Xenosaga Pied Piper fan web-manga, which covers the whole game and he is also the character designer for my own fan remake project of the game, which is about 2/3 done.

I think you can argue for Fiora being a co-protagonist of 1 on the admittedly slightly weird angle that her absence is a key part of her characterization; you start the game with ((how things should be)), and the way she shapes and changes Shulk and Reyn through her absence - I forget, who that line belongs to, but someone makes an observation after her return that Shulk and Reyn had a darkness with them that they seemed to not even have noticed themselves while she was gone. Her absence doesn't make her less important, it highlights the role she has always played. It also helps that so much of the key moments of the story happen only once she is revealed to be alive, and then later a party member, and especially the latter part placing so much focus on her journey

I think Fiora could be considered for co-protagonist status, if it weren't due to certain spoilers, as well as just overall if the game explored more of her character through lenses besides her relationship with Shulk, crucial to Xenoblade 1 though it is as one of the emotional pillars of said story. The heart-to-hearts amend this slightly, but overall, I wish I could disagree and say she's another protagonist, but sadly, she ain't getting past deuteragonist.

I think that for a few characters mentioned as potential protagonists, they could be argued to be Deuteragonists, aka the 'secondary main character'. Jin in Torna is probably the most obvious example, but you could make an argument for Pyra/Mythra actually having this role in 2, and A in Future Redeemed, or either Mio in 3 or if you consider her the co-protag that the other four playable characters are this.

I would just like to make the observation that while from a narrative point of view Shulk is the clear and singular protagonist of XC1, from a gameplay perspective Melia IS set up to be the secondary protagonist - not only does she have her Elementals making her one of the more complex and interesting characters, she also has Mind Blast, which offers the only alternative to Shulk's Monado Purge for dealing with certain mechanics - and is good enough at that job that the only time it doesn't let you skip out on Monado Purge is the single UM where you can't work around spike damage and have to supress it or use Gems to negate it - and she shares with Shulk the distinction of being able to specifcally flex between damage and team support. Ironically, from the gameplay side Future Connected accidentally breaks the last point by unintentionally gutting Melia's damage-focused builds with the removal of skill trees - her damage builds are somewhat reliant on Elemental Burst hanging around for a while, which means having high Tension, and Melia is simply the worst character at gaining Tension across the entire party unless she has a specific Skill Link that gives her the single best Tension engine in the entire game (an entire LEVEL every five seconds, and ignores Burst Affinity, which Melia is also bad at triggering), so she struggles to get going, and even if she DOES get going, the combination of missing her - 30% aggro during Elemental Burst Skill and Nene missing all of Reyn's Skills means that Melia's aggro generation can be rather problematic, and the lack of the ability to Skill Link into equipping heavy armour combined with the limited gear on the Bionis' Shoulder leaving her even squishier than in the base game doesn't help, meaning that even though Melia-Reyn-Sharla with damage Melia is a perfectly functional team in the base game (I pesonally used it for most of the game once I got to Prison Island, even into the post game), Melia-Nene-Kino with damage Melia simply doesn't work very well. The salt in the wound is that damge Shulk basically has none of these issues, as he simply isn't as reliant on his Skills (several of which are moot because of no Visions) and he has his Shadow Eye to make aggro a non issue even with Nene's aggro limitations - and he even gets to use a 999-999 weapon for the final boss, which Melia simply doesn't get an equivalent to.

Um, AcKsHuAlLy, Jin is a party member when you explore the sunken ship in Chapter 1 and outright playable at the beginning of Chapter 8, so you can't say he isn't a party member in the base game.

I think one thing about the 'protag' label is people often associate screentime or prominence as a pointer when it's not directly correlated. The fandom also gets to sensitive about how they view characters and this results in people dictating by their own book rather than understanding why a character is a protag. For me, while Saga 2 leans more to Jr, I wouldn't call him a protag but the game just shifting focus. A bit weird cuz it's technically its own game while being a section of the overall story. Similarly, I would say missing year falls under this where there's not really a protag because it's just an interlude not meant to be independent on its own. It's like if we didn't get torna like originally and played jin for a chapter, I would hardly call that protag material. You can be a main character without having to be the protag which I think say Kosmos falls under, same with Pyra/Mythra and like how all of ouroboros are called Main characters If we go by official material only, the protags are Fei, Shion, Ziggy, Shulk, Melia, Rex, Jin, Noah & Mio, and Matthew. All of them either from creators, marketing, or descriptions are viewed as protags. While Lora is the POV, as stated in the vid it's because of narrative reasons for that. There's the whole Driver blade bond which I think muddies it more since whatever the driver does the blade is usually involved and vice versa. Torna ends with Jin's monologue and is meant to be a lead into morytha where we teamup with Jin so it's more seeing jin's journey through lora's eyes. Though because Lora is framed as the POV this is the one i usually dont care if people think it the most. Regardless I think the conversation gets hectic only because people unnecessarily complicate things by how they view importance rather than the way the story is structured and how it is structured around is crucial and a character gaining the spotlight temporarily doesn't mean roles are shifted imo. Think people forget there is a thing called a deuteragonist.

I feel a lot of stuff could be cleared up if you talked about the "deuteragonist" role, which quite simply is just "the most important character save for the protagonist." I'm not gonna argue for or against any of what you said in the video, but I feel a lot of characters that "feel like they could be considered a protagonist" could be considered a deuteragonist. I 100% agree that Mio is the secondary protagonist of Xenoblade 3. She is my favorite character from the game and is bare-none the most important character of Xenoblade 3's story after Noah. However my only issue is that they retroactively under-billed Pyra and Mythra in Xenoblade 2. Mio is always billed as equally the protagonist to Noah in Xenoblade 3's marketing, but when you actually play the game it's clear that Noah is the "main" protagonist while Mio is secondary. Meanwhile Pyra and Mythra are indeed billed as the main Blades of Xenoblade 2, but it's always Rex alone who is billed as the protagonist of the game, when Pyra and Mythra are more equal to Rex within the story of Xenoblade 2 (if not greater than him) than Mio is to Noah in Xenoblade 3. My only guess is that they didn't really want to bill a character you don't have direct control over as a protagonist despite that effectively being the case. Also I agree with your take that Mythra could be considered the protagonist of Xenoblade 2 as a whole (not to undersell Rex, he is my favorite mainline Xenoblade protagonist.)

Hello, Im kinda new to the channel and to Xenoblade at all basically, I know some spoilery stuff about the whole trilogy, specially XC2 but the only game I played was Torna the Golden Country through the physical version. I love that game so much in so many areas, like the locations, the music, the story and specially the characters, Lora is an amazingly written character and she was very likeable and cool, Jin is also very interesting and has great dynamic with Lora and the whole party is excellent too, they are like a big family. Do this channel occasionaly talk about Lora or Torna in the vídeos? Or it doesn't have too much of a presence, because Xenoblade 3 is more relevant? I just wanna know, cause I would like to learn more stuff about these topics.

KOS-MOS is bigger than the protagonist. She’s the mascot of Monolith Soft as a whole. I do agree that she can be considered the protagonist alongside Shion even if Shion is definitely the protagonist. Mio and Noah are both protagonists 100%. They build off eachother in so many ways. Lora is by far the main character in Torna. You learn about her in the base game and then she’s the character you start with in Torna. Your points on Fei and Elly make a lot of sense so no argument there. Xenoblade 1 protagonist is obviously Shulk. Fiora goes missing for near the entire game so it’s not possible to call her a protagonist alongside Shulk, imo. Rex is definitely the main character in 2.

I just wished that Mio had the same focus as Noah gameplay wise, the guy gets the most broken power in the game and 2 extra arts and she just gets a suboptimal extra art. Why xenoblade?! Why?!

Probably cause the name is so common, that the character's name wouldn't be recognisable. (Also im like 90% there already was a Laura in xc2 somewhere else)

I don’t get why people think future connected is it’s own story Like it’s just a bonus chapter after the end of xc1 I don’t think considering fc to be the same as torna or future redeemed makes sense

It has its own beginning, progression and end. You cannot even carry over anything from DE and you can play it first if you really want to. By all accounts, it is its own entry in every way that matters.

@@lpfan4491they don’t let you use your old save because DE is a remaster of an old game and they wanted to let returning players play the new content first And compared to the other expansions fc has a really short story where basically the only thing that happens is Melia getting more development and some very cryptic foreshadowing for future redeemed. Torna and Future Redeemed are clearly their own stories set in the world of the game they are a dlc of, I can’t say the same for fc.

Wild Arms V does something sort of similar to Xenoblade 3 with the way we get things from Mio's perspective read from her diary. In Wild Arms V, although Dean is the protagonist, it feels like things are being seen from Rebecca's perspective down to the point where we hear her thoughts and get those same exact kind of diary readings which are fully narrated by Rebecca (like Mio). Also, if you play in Japanese -- Dean has the same voice actor as Rex (and a similar design)!
