When you see a bag of watches at a flea market or a garage sale, it usually means that the owners are amateur watch repairmen, collectors, or hobbyists. Often those sellers know what they are worth and when they have a pile of junk.
@vintagesterlingfinds2 жыл бұрын
Ill be honest, generally at thrift stores they have a very basic understanding. I have gotten great watches for dollars. Five times, I have bought solid gold watches from them.
@jerseyneil12 жыл бұрын
@@vintagesterlingfinds I guess it depends on where one lives and the quality of the local thrift shops. I live in Central NJ and the best watch I have ever found at a thrift shop was a Victorinox quartz watch for $20. I passed on it because it wasn’t for me. The shops near me have a good understanding of quality v. junk. Items like watches are screened by managers before they are put on the floor.

Very interesting! Where I live, there are a lot of very high end housing developments, and a lot of Goodwill Stores where high end goods seem to make it into the Goodwill stores. I go golf club shopping and watch shopping! I have 3 right now that I need to get batteries for...2 of them I might get $40 each...but one of them is a high end fashion watch company that makes both automatic and quartz models. The case is 925 silver with 18k rose gold plating. It's really a gorgeous watch..and I am still not sure if I am going to sell it, as the rectangular shaped case is really nice looking! Nice to someone else making a little extra cash fixing up watches that you find in thrift stores!

The Vacheron is deffinatley a fake. The 750 on the case back indicates that the case is 18k gold alloy, which it is not. (You may have noticed that it does not have the weight of gold.) In particular, the rotor is clearly not gold and has been stamped. There is no visible assayers' stamp to accompany the alloy stamp. These can be hard to spot sometimes though. The movement is not finished to the standard of the Geneva Seal. While VC did not submit all of its watches for the Geneva Seal for all of its history, this movement is so far from that standard that it would be hard to conceive of VC using it. The logo and word mark design on this watch was never used by VC. This design comes up periodically in forums and is always said to be a fake. Specifically, this design never existed in the VC catalog (as far as I know), so it is not a replica. Instead, it is an example of brand piracy.
@philthedrill22442 жыл бұрын
Solid analysis. I was going to comment that it looks like something from the Invicta reject pile with a Seagull (or lesser) 2824 clone movement and VC logo slapped on, but you went beyond my educational depth so I’ll just defer to you and give you a like 😂
