What sells this scene for me is: 1: Luz's inability to look at Amity while talking about her dad passing. A clear sign that she is lying/avoiding the truth of how she feels, when you are emotional and trying o hide it avoiding someone's gaze is the 1st thing you do because it is so much harder to hide the feelings when you look at them in the eye or even just them. 2: Amity's realization of just how much pain Luz has been in and how much of it she has been hiding. Not just about missing her father, but also about just being away from home and her mother for so long. Amity is probably wondering how much pain and fear has Luz been hiding.

@@Bubblegum_Vampire Then let me share a bit of education with you! People on the autism spectrum (, but also neurodivergent people as a whole [Luz has ADHD, so she is a part of that]) don't really do the eye contact thing (most not all, Luz seems to be unbothered, unless feelings pop up --> pattern), so the way Luz communicated via body language doesn't have to be avoidant. In fact your subconsciously regulated body lingo being *incongruent* with your words is more of a giveaway of her being avoidant of her emotions than the other way around, cuz she cognitively acts fine, but clearly is still emotionally suffering from this --> vocal fluctuations due to emotional impact, jelly legs, need for recovery time, facial expressions getting a (I'll just call it that for simplicity) depressed note (check her eyes) etc. The writing and attention to detail in this show are just amazing!

@thomasbedient91912 жыл бұрын
One of the things I love about Lumity (aside from being so frickin sweet it'll give you diabetes) is that it IS such a healthy relationship. That's one of things I applaud the writers for. Its ALLOWED to be healthy. Most shows/books/etc. force drama by making relationships unhealthy, even toxic, just to drag out the drama. . But with these two, the writers realized that there's enough drama and other things going on in their lives that they could just let them be healthy and good for each other. I also love how as they become more comfortable in their relationship, the relationship itself takes a back seat narratively. They're not defined by each other, but they've always got the other's back. Its what a real, healthy relationship looks like long term. Being in a relationship doesn't magically fix everything, but it does (or should) mean you always have someone to lean on when you need it. Luz and Amity highlight that beautifully. I so wish the writers had more time to flesh out their story because they are so good at writing these two.
@DarkDreamsAndMoonlitNights2 жыл бұрын
I have to respectfully disagree. Their relationship isn't that healthy. That doesn't mean they can't work on their issues to make it healthy, but it's not currently healthy. Luz keeps on keeping things from Amity until after they've been forced out into the light. It's called lying by omission, or sparing another's feelings by hiding your own. Luz needs to talk about what's going on so Amity can support her right from the start. Imagine how different Thanks to them could have turned out if Luz told everyone that Hunter felt Belos there. How much it wouldn't have hurt her friends and her Amity if she told them how Phillip had tricked her into helping him find The Collector. Heck, the Day of Unity could have turned out a lot better for the heroes if they knew how Phillip had tricked her. They could have attempted to steal The Collector away before the Day even happened.
@sorryipanicked38492 жыл бұрын
@@DarkDreamsAndMoonlitNights i wouldn't say that that's really a relationship problem? Like obviously yes it affects their relationship, but I think that's more of just a problem Luz has that goes on to affect a lot of things, including Lumity's relationship, but it's not limited to _just_ their relationship, so it's not really just a relationship problem.
@thomasbedient91912 жыл бұрын
@@DarkDreamsAndMoonlitNights As the other person says, that's not an issue with their relationship as much as it is Luz's personal demons. Without diving too deep into her psyche, she has a repeated issue with not feeling like she can be completely honest with people. This effects her relationships with literally everyone in the cast. This also goes back to what I said about them not being defined by their relationship a bit. It goes the other way too: the relationship is not automatically unhealthy if one or both have mental health problems. A true test (imo) of a relationship is how it handles conflict, because conflict, IS going to happen in any relationship, even the most healthy ones. This is important to understand because many people think "As long as we're not fighting everything is good," which isn't always the case. And here you can examine Lumity when the truth of what Luz was keeping from people finally comes out. (Again, its important to note she was keeping this from EVERYONE, not just Amity). First off, what you don't see: "It's ok, Luz, you didn't do anything wrong." I was so glad Amity didn't say that. What she said instead is "I could never hate you." That does not say "I'm not mad" or "you didn't do anything wrong." Instead it says, "I am upset, and you did do wrong, but it doesn't stop me loving you." Its also important to know they DO tell Luz that accidentally helping Belos wasn't the issue. "Belos uses people, if it wasn't you, it would have been someone else." Luz was afraid her friends would abandon her if they found out what she did. They don't, of course, but they still let her know she did wrong by not telling them. And these things are important, and, yes, healthy. Its human to make mistakes. The worst thing you can do is pretend they weren't mistakes. And the show handles this beautifully in 3x01. Even when Luz is talking to her mother and saying its her fault her friends are stuck there, Camila doesn't say "Its not your fault", instead she says "Everyone makes mistakes." And that's how Amity handles it as well. "Yes, you did wrong. Yes, it hurt my feelings that you kept this from me." But she doesn't hold it over her or dwell on it, she just says "No more keeping secrets." And lets her know that, of course, it doesn't change how she feels about her. 1. Acknowledges the wrongdoing. 2. Acknowledges the pain it caused. 3. Makes plan for corrective action. 4. Reaffirms her feelings and lets the other know she's ready to move forward. I think that's very healthy.

Really this scene exemplifies why I love their relationship so much. They have a genuine emotional attachment to and understanding of one another, and with that a willingness to listen. Too often fictional romances are undercut by parties not communicating with one another, making assumptions, or being unwilling to hear their significant other out. Amity starts this scene out still obviously upset with Luz for how her antics ruined this event for her, yet even then is willing to give Luz a chance to explain herself, clearly realizing that her girlfriend's behavior has been subtly off the entire day. And when Luz gives a genuine, heartfelt apology explaining the cause of her behavior without leaning on it as an excuse, Amity immediately accepts it and moves from being upset with Luz to being concerned over how obviously affected by the anniversary of her father's death she is. No attempts to artificially create or unnecessarily prolong relationship drama between two characters who clearly care a great deal for one another. When it occurs the drama feels legitimate precisely because the writers do not forget that these characters still love and trust each other deeply. Even in her temporary anger over a betrayal of that trust, Amity does not completely forget her feelings for Luz, and gives her the benefit of the doubt to explain herself and apologize. Other writers really ought to take notes on this because this is precisely how to write a healthy, romantic relationship and have it be believable.

The two moments that strike me the most are Amity's subtle eye movements of expression when Luz talking about her dad, and Luz's "jelly legs" after the fact. I feel like in most shows that decide to touch upon heavy moments like this, they'll acknowledge the weight of the topic at hand, without really going into detail of the unconscious bodily reactions that come with discussing such emotionally charged subjects. This moment demonstrates an attentiveness to detail that I haven't seen of any other show that truly sets it apart from others.

Its very beautifully written how she avoids it, or lash out at things (that abomaton), and pile it up with "distractions" in an attempt to run from it. I love the Owl House for reasons like this. I lost my dad at the age of 10 and even now that I'm 22, it's hard. I love the LGBTQ rep in the show sure, but it is such a great moment to see some personal representation as well. Sure we can joke about how Disney likes the whole "dead parent" trope but it felt real coming from Luz. They nailed her expressions too and it reminded me..and continues to remind me.. of how I felt or deal with that anniversary every year. I don't know if any of the creators will ever see this, but if you do thank you for finally giving me a character I truly relate to and understand. I hope you never had to go through that loss but if you did thank you for creating an outlet that others can relate to too.

Wow, I never really thought that Luz has lost her father, really this explains many things in front of her attitude since growing up without a father figure is really sad and makes you little strong in the face of the problems and challenges that existed, Dana Terrace knew how to portray this perfectly and made the boiling islands, Eda, King, Willow, Gus, Amity and many more as the motivators to the change towards the best version of Luz. I was very sad the truth when I heard him say smile of the death of his father. If Luz existed I think she would deserve a hug just like all those children who grew up or grow up without a father or mother.

This whole season is really coming home with the “smile to hide the pain and burden myself over others” character flaw with Luz. You see that incredibly desperate sense of repression in every Lumity episode this season, but even ones without Amity like Separate Tides and Yesterday’s Lie lean hard on Luz being reckless of her own danger for others and panicking at social communication. This girl really needed friends and emotional support yet was disconnected for what’s shown now as YEARS. Honestly brilliant of Dana and crew for how well this makes sense across numerous episodes.

You can tell how hard this is from the start just by how she can't look at Amity while talking about. And Amity can't stay mad at Luz. The ending scene with the balloon and the flowers was also really good. I loved the detail that Amity isn't nearly as good at drawing the glyphs as Luz, since she doesn't have much practice, but the shot of the flowers floating away, and just them sitting next to each other was so beautiful. Also, as someone who's on the spectrum and has recurring issues with trying to hide problems and lying to people about them to keep them from worrying about it, seeing all that same behavior in Luz is just really sad. It's like when you know something bad is gonna happen, and you know a character is making a mistake, but it's 10x worse because it's the exact same thing you would do in that situation. Amity knows when Luz is lying to her or hiding stuff from her, and we've already had that happen twice in 4 episodes. Having to confront your loved one about lying to you multiple times is a good way to strain a relationship fast, and even if Amity doesn't want to completely end the relationship, it's gonna cause some trust issues after enough repeats.

I already think Luz's voice actress does a fantastic job bringing Luz's character to life, but this scene made me respect her so much more. Everything felt so real. I think that's why this scene it me so hard, it had nothing to do with magic or anything related to fiction, it's a character talking about a very very real thing everyone goes through or will go through. What adds to the gravity of this scene is luz is still holding in a lot of stuff, not just about her dads passing but the promise luz’s mom wants her to keep when luz inevitably returns home of staying with her and never returning to her friends and new family in this world. When that problem surfaces (along with the unity) everything’s gonna crash down on Luz at once.
@nathancaldwell54432 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, I can totally understand why Luz would want to keep that a secret. The grief of losing a father is something I don't know about, but I can understand that such a topic is very sensitive and most people wouldn't want to speak about it. Luz wanted to avoid talking about it as thinking about her dad and being unable to fulfill the ritual in his honor stirred up some very painful repressed memories. However, Luz needed to learn that their people will listen and support her through such hard times. Amity's reaction also is worth a mention, she doesn't say anything, but we can all see the shock, remorse, guilt, and even horror of what she just heard. She just witnessed Luz at most emotionally vulnerable, and with that, she's developed a new understanding that goes deeper than anyone else on the isles. Amity has always relied on her girlfriend as emotional support, a confidant, and someone who helped guide her to a better path. But now the young witch realizes that she's not the only one who's hurting on the inside, she now realizes that Luz is actually a deeply traumatized, lonely child who relies on fantasy, and cheery optimism to cover up her pain. Luz isn't used to being empathized with and putting others' problems first and foremost as a way to distract herself from her own. Amity promising the help Luz pick some flowers to help her fulfill her ritual is basically her way of support to her girlfriend at her most emotionally lowest point. She's basically saying "It's okay Luz, you don't have to hide anything from me, and I'll always be there for you when you need it most." That is some solid writing there.

“It was a long time ago” Doesn’t mean anything in terms of grief. Grief is complicated and highly dependent on the person affected. It could be a fresh wound or a decade old scar, the process of healing isn’t quick or linear. The only way to describe it is ‘natural’, nobody grieves the same.

The best scene in all the show, and you can't change my mind. It really shows, not only how much Amity cares for Luz, but, quite honestly, how hard it is for Luz to act or, do something accidentally selfish. It breaks her "It happened a long time ago" as she tries to invalidate the problem, trying not to make the discussion about herself, and the voice breaking... It's amazing. Its even better, when you realize it's infront of the Grom tree

Anyone who's ever met a 14-year-old will tell you how freaking mature they're both being right now. Despite her own hurt, Amity knows from past experience that Luz never hurts others on purpose and that she's been acting out of character throughout the whole day; Amity then sets aside her hurt feelings in order to get to the bottom of what caused this behavior. Instead of clamming up or lashing out, Luz straight-up discloses the extremely personal reason why she's been acting out and going into further detail as to why and how it influenced the mistakes she made. She starts with saying that it doesn't excuse her actions, and ends her explanation with genuine remorse and a whole-hearted apology for how she's behaved. Amity then heavily implies that she's willing to accept Luz's apology, forgive her, and talk everything out after the situation has been resolved. ...Holy shit, I *WISH* people in real life were this mature and understanding towards each other.

Also she looked away from Amity bc seeing her so worried for Luz breaks Luz’s heart 🥲

As someone who lost their dad a few years ago and just recently lost two other family members unexpectedly. This episode hit harder than an 18 wheeler traveling at lightspeed on the freeway

😭😭 It reminds me of Coco where Coco's father was murdered until years later Miguel sings to his great grandmother Coco just like her father used to sing to her when she was little

I like how commanding she sounded with her tone 1:44 lol, but I know she was just embarrassed and she cares about Luz

That moment when you want to reach through the screen, wrap that child in a hug and not let go for the rest of the night.

This episode was such a wonderful representation of father-daughter relationships for teen girls. No petty drama or pointless anger or pitting siblings or parents against each other. Just a thoroughly nuanced and authentic representation of the importance of communication and the gaining of independance.

I love how Amity doesn’t get mad at Luz in this seen, she’s mainly just worried for her. Amity really is the best girlfriend I’ve seen in any form of media

Here after the ending. Amity’s eyes when Luz tells her is just… burned into my mind. Amity is my favorite character in the show and the sheer shock on her face is just heart wrenching.

Honestly the face amity makes is exactly why it's so hard to talk about this kind of stuff. After a while it's emotionally exhausting, and you try to push your feelings down so that you don't make people sad for you, and you begin to feel guilty that people are spending emotional energy on you. No matter what you say though, most loved ones will be pretty sad to hear that. Anyway Amity is a good girlfriend.

This scene was a great scene. Not only does it give more chacter development it also shows the reaction most people would have perfectly. The face of horror on amittys face was exactly how I would react.

This scene is so well done. Luz's voice cracking as she speaks, the shocked look on Amity's face, all with the quiet music in the background.

Im glad Amity did not lash out to Luz unlike when they were strangers in S1. Luz wouldn’t be dumb on purpose out there so of course there’s something going on. Usually amity’s self righteous & succeeding so im glad she hear Luz out.

it’s so sad but so real how luz keeps emphasizing how “it’s not a big deal and it was totally a long time ago” i really feel her on that one 😭

Luz's burden gets so strong she literally collapses under it. Dead parents are a common Disney trope. Too common. Offensively common. At least here it matters. Her dad died a decade ago and it still hurts because it should. It probably hurts worse because of the guilt of leaving her Mom alone this year.

@@claireaquos6532 Another important observation: Luz asks if she can sit down. Because boundaries matter even with your partner.

@@OsirisLord THIS! This is indeed something I LOVE about Lumity: How they respect their bounderies! An other exemple I can give is the fact that Amity did NOT look inside Luz's phone when she knew the latter was hiding something. The episode wouldn't change that much if she did (Hell, I have a feeling that in a earlier script, Amity did check it, but someone step in to change it...), yet the fact they precise she didn't do it shows not only a great respect of privacy but also what should be done first: Confronting your partner. Bonus point for showing Amity struggling on weather or not she should do it in the first place. That shows that yes, it might be difficult but it's nescessary.

My grandma died when I was still at school and I was crying so hard after the funeral. The memory of the walk after the funeral was hazy and I still miss her I'm so glad this episode exist because the death of a relatives or extended family can be heartbreaking.

You know a relationship is strong when a person says something to a lover that they haven’t completely understand but will do it anyway for said lover.
