I moved to SD the following summer (1987), about 15 minutes north of the airbase. I still live in the same area but Miramar is now a USMC base. Aviators are seen and heard flying a few times, daily. But everytime I hear them flying all I can think is: You know there’s got to be two Marine equivalents of these two, that have flown below the hardeck, causing their airboss to spill their coffee all over their uniform. 😆😆😆😆

You guys get that the E6 was someone actually stationed at Top Gun at the time the movie was being filmed and was probably given by his compatriots the honor of being in this movie by playing the bit part of guy who brings the coffee. Just like the pilot who actually flew the jet past the tower was actually stationed at Top Gun and chosen from all the pilots there to do the stunt. I saw in the special features that the guy knew he was doing it for all the guys at TG that never got the chance to do it in real life.

In one of those hangars I was TAD with VF-2 for the summer of '95, then joined up with my squadron VFA-151 for the Top Gun Det. That was the last summer Navy Fighter Weapons School was in NAS Miramar. By the next summer Top Gun was at NAS Fallon and Miramar was now(then) MCAS Miramar as it was originally.

I was the Mess Hall cook when they were shooting this scene. They must have repeated it 20 times. I heard that Goose and Mav were giggling a kept hitting each other in the nuts, so it took a long time. They insisted on fresh hot coffee for each take. I probably made 10 carafes of Golden Horn Mountain Blend that day. Tom "Pretty Boy" Cruise was a bit of a Dandy Boy and insisted on an Almondretto shot and cream with every cup.

There's a little thing called "CPO Initiation Program". Any E-6 who has been selected to become a Chief has to go through the time-honored tradition of "initiation". This includes doing several embarrassing and demeaning things for the Chief's Mess, such as delivering coffee for the chiefs and officers, having to do ridiculous tasks like cooking full course meals and cleaning the Chief's Mess, among many other things. But in the end, it's all for the coveted gold anchor and khakis.
