As a Finn who has seen all of Kaurismäki's films, I'm really happy to see how more and more people are discovering his filmography because of Fallen Leaves. He's a master of his craft and has never made a bad film.

I was an Au Pair for a year and if I remember correctly my host father asked me if I knew Kaurismäki. When I told him I didn't, he said we'd watch something of his once it was deep in winter, when the sun was only out for a few hours, and split a bottle of vodka. We never ended up going through with it, but I'm glad to have a place to start with his filmography. Thanks!

It's almost 9 years since I watched my first Kaurismäki, The Match Factory Girl (then, not yet knowing it was part of a thematic trilogy). I always meant to watch his other works and Shadows in Paradise had been in my watchlist since then, but it's only this year that I'm finally doing it. This is partly because the acclaim of Fallen Leaves reminded and motivated me to fulfill that wish, but also because I finally subscribed to Mubi and now have them all readily available. So far I've watched both Shadows of Paradise and Ariel (I'll probably re-watch The Match Factory Girl today), and after my bleak introduction to Kaurismäki, one thing I didn't expect from his other movies was how funny - and a very peculiar kind of funny -- they'd be. Beyond that, his sensibility to political and social issues, the absurdities of human life, and his genuine, almost palpable love for cinema, make it so hard not be fascinated by his filmography, if not outright in love with it. I hope this video will inspire many to know his work. It's definitely because of people like him that I'm able to fall in love with cinema again and again.

Kaurismaki is one of my favorites. Like many in the United States, I first saw "Go America" . I think for those in the USA, that or his music video for " Through the Wire" is a great place to start appreciating his genius.

I came here this morning to do some preparatory research for a planned video introduction to Kaurismäki, but I find that the brilliant Will Webb has beaten me to it. And he's not even a Finn. But maybe it's poetic justice, since his excellent series on creating video essays helped me get started. It's astonishing to think of how much viewing and thinking and writing went into this before any editing took place. This video will make a lot of people want to see more Kaurismäki.

as someone new to Kaurismaki, i'm thrilled to get to know the director. i saw fallen leaves on the theater but i was not in the mood and found it boring. then, after hearing more about him, i decided to give him a second chance and watched le havre. everything started to make sense for me and i felt like i understood his cinematography. now i want to see more, and i definitely giving fallen leaves a second watch cuz i know in my heart is better than my first experience.

Kaurismäki lives in a Kaurismäki world himself. When they founded a New York style bar in Helsinki and it became too hip and popular for themselves to spend time in, they founded a Soviet style Cafe Moskva to spend time in instead thinking it wouldn't attract too many and wrong kind of customers. When the rent lease expired, the building went under renovation and they had to close.

Thank you for the video. I also discovered Kaurismaki recently, love his cinematography and style. So far, I have watched his two trilogies: Proletariat and Loser . My favourites are Ariel and Drifting Clouds.
