LX470 and Land Cruiser Replacing Tailgate Handle and latch assembly

This is a quick video of me replacing the latch and handle mechanism on my 1998 Lexus LX470. I 3D printed the handle and it fits really nicely. if anyone is interested please leave a comment and I will post them on ebay or something. Thank you all for watching.

what caused it to rust is the little rubber cap above "child protector" sticker. they should be removed in colder climates. (condensation)

In another several years I will just need to replace the whole upper tailgate since it’s starting to rust where the handle is

Just wondering what tool you used to remove the plastic handle? I tried to pry the clips on the left and right side with a screwdriver, but it didn’t move at all.

The handle on my 2000 LC broke and the tailgate is closed. Is there a way to open it (the tailgate) from the inside? Thanks!

Yes there is a latch on the inside. Also if you get a pair of pliers or something you can swing the metal tabs to open the gate if there is anything left of them.

I wonder what was wrong with the old mechanism. Since you set the new one to the same length and it didn't work until you readjusted it makes me wonder if you could have just adjust the old one.

If it's anything like mine on my 80, it still works but is rusted.

Any idea how to reset a solid red VGRS light? It seems has some thing to to do with the steering angle sensor? Thx

If you have the techstream software and the usb obd2 connector you can reset this VGRS by going to Chassis/VGRS/Utility/Steering and following the instructions. It is very easy though techstream. If you don't have the techstream software or cable you can get both as a package on Amazon. I did a video on techstream and how usefull it is. All you need is an laptop.
