I just bought a 2005 Cruiser. One owner with all the dealer service records. I paid $6800 for it from the dealer. It had 351k miles but I can find nothing wrong with it. Most of the stuff you mentioned has been fixed, several times over. I'll get it on a rack soon. Most people I have talked to about it thinks I am crazy for buying a car with that many miles, but I have had a FJ60 and FJ62, so know how well built they are. What really surprises me is how reasonable and available all the little stuff is that I need for it. Except for some missing molding, it looks brand new on the outside. I've only had it a for two days now but it looks like I will be able to fix all the little issues I have found for under $500.

Great advice, I'm about to go see one from 1999 I expect A LOT of issues xD *UPDATE* 280k km - I did buy it, AHC is OK, engine, isnt leaking, transmission is shutterinig when reversing (was fine when I drove it over there), powersteering pump is lealking, the silent blocks were devastated, blown rear shocks and many many MANY other things. - including bizzare things like, rear window wiper only working when I open rear passenger door left/right. Money-pit I'D buy it again xD

An important inspection is to check it thoroughly underneath for RUST. Ideally buy from one-owner vehicles that lived in a warm (no snow/no salt) state. 2008-2011/12 200 series is a good relative bargain. The 200 series also features a more powerful V8 engine and nicer interior. 2010+ has GPS.

great info on this vid. Guys if you plan on purchasing one make sure to buy one from a state which is not in the salt belt state and it's well worth taking a trip after you find one in the ideal price range in one of the dry states. Reach an agreement with the seller to meet you at a local off road shop for a pre purchase inspection on a rack to get an honest run down of the condition of the car, it will be the best money you can spend before making a decision to purchase. Best of luck and see you out in the backcountry. Happy Overlanding.

Loved this video! I'm considering a 2006. It's a California car with 200k miles. To my surprise it has a decent amount of surfaces rust on the whole of the underside and suspension components, nothing structural that I can tell though. Even in the engine bay some of the bolt heads are lightly rusted. I was a little surprised as some of the California cars are like new under there (like my 02 4Runner).... Is there a big difference in how easy these are to work on with no rust vs surface rust?

I bought a 03 LC100 with 200k miles but I found it has no record for a timing belt replacement. No sticker too! AWFUL ME! The engine revs at about 1200 on cold start before it settles down at 800 stable after a few minutes. The head gaskets have silicone like recently sealed. Under engine is wet but with no active leaks. I'm already scared 😨. What do you think I should do first?
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM 3 жыл бұрын
The high rev on start up is normal. It's likely the valve cover gaskets that are siliconed not the head gaskets. If it is indeed the head gaskets that's an issue. The wetness underneath may be residual from valve cover leaks. I'd start with a good cleaning and see if there are still leaks. Then address those and the timing belt.
@salongoedmondmpungu2928
@salongoedmondmpungu2928 3 жыл бұрын
@@OTRAMM Thanks! You are right, it's the valve cover gaskets with silicone. I will look for something to spray on the oil-wet underneath so it dries. I'm going to save money aside for the timing belt replacement. Probably $1000 may do

Couple months ago looked at a one owner 2002 100 series at 99,000 miles. Unfortunately lots of rust. Skid plates, Sway bar brackets crumbling away. Lots of rust on suspension components and suspension brackets and parts of frame. Mechanically everything worked but all the bolts and nuts and fasteners will be a pain to work on because of all the rust. They were asking $4,000. I was tempted but I passed.

I have recently found a very cheap one, model 2000. When I change the gear from N to D or N to R, I can hear a noise from the gearbox. Is that something major? It also has some oil leak around the gearbox seals which my mechanic says that's not so expensive to change! but he may say that to make some money out of it!

Without looking at it, it's hard to say. I've seen them get slop in the driveshaft slip joints and cause a clunk. I've also seen wear in the drive flanges, and the front differential carrier where the axle goes in. Unfortunately it could be a number of things.

Are all of those issues gone with the 200 series?

The 200 is a completely different drivetrain so it'll likely have different issues. We haven't seen enough 200s yet to get a good idea of their weaknesses.
