That smile when Jack hears that girl names him right after asking about Blackbeard - absolutely perfect. I felt such a surge of joy for him. He has sought to make his name into something, and grotesque as it may be, this little girl half a world away sees him as a giant. No such thing as bad publicity, huh Rackham? Such a fantastic series. I will miss it badly when it ends next week.

A fictionalized version of a supposedly real person realizing they’ve been fictionalized, and someone who’s obsessed with getting their name into the books learning that it’s happened but that the details are beyond their control... there’s a lot to unpack here yet it’s such a relatively simple scene. Probably my fav in the whole series.

I love how this show plays around with historiography. It's one of the only historical fiction shows that has a good justification for distorting the truth: the truth was heavily distorted in the first place. Jack knows it, and sadly so does Silver. The stories they tell, more than the truth, are what shape history.

Especially tools of the French and English Empires to basically steal Spain’s gold because they had so much they didn’t even know what to do with it. Like in the scene where Flint in a flashback takes Thomas Hamilton to a hanging and argues that the threat of the pirates makes the public more supportive of the government, and then when Mrs. Guthrie and Max talk about how the threat of pirates drives up insurance prices for merchants. Interesting to extrapolate those discussions to the present day and consider how many people and corporations profit from petty crime (not to mention white collar crime).

Nice perspective in the scene though. "The truth" was that she just sát there with 'Calico' Jack Rackham himsélf! Which is another good point of the propaganda going around; She was obviously led to believe that the Nassau-Pirates were just some cruel savages(Vane making stew of his enemies?). She'd probably have a similar image of Teach and Rackham. Never even closely suspecting that the well-spoken and mannered man, sitting there in that library actually wás the very Jack Rackham! How's that for an interesting truth? Lydia was just oblivious and ignorant to the truth.

That scene is so beautiful! For so long Rackham tried to make a name for himself, not realising that it would get skewed and changed to serve the victors... It goes beautifully with Flint's shadows speech... Rackham, Silver etc all misunderstood their opportunity and exchange it for some fleeting peace... Sealing their fate with status quo and then back to vassals of a king that couldn't care less about their lives... It is the perfect segway into treasure Island... How all the stories get distorted just for children pleasure. Such a great show.

The thing I love about this scene is that we get the start of one of the big themes of the show, how the stories that are told about people and places are far more important and long lasting then the truth of the matter. This comes to a head at the end of the show, as those of you have watched to the finale will know.

This scene had an amazing perspective yes! Jack Rackham is perhaps a bit underestimated in the beginning of the show, but he surely proved his worth! It was Rackham that told Teach to just 'bluntly' raise the black against the British Navy, and delude them in being tactically incompetent...only to serve Commodore Chamberlaine a horrible defeat!! Tactically brilliant actually! ...and they nabbed one of his ships whilst offensively incapacitating the leadship! It was Rackham that indeed nabbed the Urca's gold, from under Flint's nose! And its absolutely brilliant how this 'ignorant push little dove' talks about his fame, yet has no clue who he really is. He admitted quietly that he knew Teach, and Charles Vane was his best friend... so much for a smooth hint, yet this 'little powdernose' is so starstruck to actually meet a REAL man instead of the fake sociopaths she usually meets, she really hasnt gotten a clue it's the REAL Jack Rackham, sitting right there next to her.

Underrated moment for the whole character of Calico, he wanted the fame and glory while others were driven by different motives and yet he gets annoyed when he realizes that he won't really ever get the idealistic fame that he seeks. Deep down he knew that the real idealist was Charles Vane and that's why he was so ready to talk highly about him.

Love that the producers/writers took time to craft and include this scene in the series. Pairs well with Flint's Dragon speech. And that the pirates knew that their biggest weapon was fear. The only fault is at the end when Jack tells the young lady to "read a book." I get the sentiment but Woods-Rodgers already told him his book was only letting people know what he wanted them to know. I think if Jack co-opted that line it would have landed better. Game recognizing game.

Love it when he realizes he finally had the legacy he always sought. A young girl far away telling the story of how he outsmarted Flint. And it’s great how he refuses to let the girl talk so bad about Vane. It’s funny to think about how similar these Pirates were to America’s founding fathers. Sure they committed crimes but a lot of their hatred for England and belief in freedom was very similar. And the Founding Fathers committed atrocities like tarring and feathering tax collectors. The real difference between them? One group won their war, the other didn’t. The ones that won got to the write history from their perspective. Had England beaten the colonies, we would know men like Washington, Jefferson, etc as nothing more than rebellious traitors, murderers, and criminals who didn’t like paying taxes.

"Scarcely" to mean "Rarely" but also sounding like "Scarily" making "the truth" seem so much more chilling, because while it's a horrifying thought to believe that Charles Vain butchered men and boiled them in a stew, the reality of Charles Vains life, and all pirates lives for that matter, is actually so much more horrific than the cannibalistic rumors could ever be.
