They're not going to be in a relationship whilst Carter is suffering the repression he is so there is no 'toxic relationship' to speak of. The entire point is that Carter has been abused in such a way that he can't cope with coming out and being in a relationship at the minute - it will probably end with him being forcibly outed as gay and practising conversion therapy, losing everything and attempting suicide as a result. He'll have no support and won't be able to cope with it mentally.

I actually agree with sineadleahy2716. Until not that many years ago there were jobs where it would not have been advisable to come out, for example, and, if discovered you would get a dishonourable discharge which would follow you round for the rest of you life.

"Gay conversion therapy" is what John Paul calls the sessions that Carter is hosting. That is not how Carter sees them. If John Paul doesn't want to attend them, he does not have to. If Carter wants to continue to host the sessions, fine; who is John Paul to say he shouldn't? If Gareth and others want to attend, fine they are grown men who can make up their own mind themselves.
