Hi Lyla, Just a thought, if you want to blow dry your models try attaching the DIFFUSER attachment to the end of your dryer; it keeps your heat settings but it diffuses the air pressure of the dryer blast... so you would end up more with more liquid products settling normally instead of wind pushing them into places you werent wanting or off of places you were wanting. Love your work, and as a hairdresser I thought this tip might help in a BIG way! Hope that helps!

Ooh, now I didn't know this one. This was the #1 thing making me nervous to use a blow dryer on my miniatures (except in cases where I actively wanted random color displacement, like I've seen some people do with acrylics on ceramic). Thank you very much!

No prob! Pro hair dresser here... we use diffusers in the salon to have something dry as if it was air drying in a gentle breeze, placing the hair in a certain style and then not having the air disturb it with air pressure. I use this all the time when painting minis :) @@dracosummoner

Hi Lyla! I wanted to ask, could you make a video recommending specific models for learning specific techniques? Like a model that has a lot of places for edge highlighting, a model that lends itself to dry brushing, or a model that has well defined volumes for learning layering/wet blending? I have a bear-with-shark-hands model that was great for dry brushing, but didn't really have any good places to practice wet blending/edge highlighting as far as I could see, and I have models with capes, but they don't have the well defined folds for practicing layering/highlighting.

I was thinking I wouldn't get much out of this because I know how to drybrush, and I usually go for a more desaturated style. You stuck enough good tips in here though that by half way through I added it to my Mini Painting Advice playlist. One thing I've been playing with that you used but didn't go into here was the way your highlight color specifically can influence the look of the model, even when the rest of the model isn't in the "genre colors"

I have a similar trick to your airbrush one that I use for D&D miniatures. It's even simpler and (only in my own opinion, of course!) creates an even more striking effect. It's effectively just a tinted zenithal, but the magic is in the paint choice. Start by spraying your miniatures with black primer. Then, spray them at a tight angle with white ink. Generally you want to do this from above, but if the model is holding a light source, it looks even better as budget OSL. Make sure to pick out all the details you want to show off. Then, take a super-saturated and translucent fluorescent paint. I prefer Golden High Flow, but any should do. Spray down the model with this fluo paint. It won't appear at all over the black areas, so you can be as messy as you like at this point. Finally, as an optional final step, use an ultra matte varnish like AK Interactive or a Mr Hobby flat rattlecan, and matte the whole thing down. Done correctly, it creates a dramatic moody look, as though the miniature is on a dark stage with a bright directional colored spotlight pointed at it. It's reminiscent of Darkest Dungeon, if it was only two colors.

@@LylaMev I was thinking just the initial drybrush portion in color instead of monochrome of slapchop but before adding the inks or speed paints. I respect you and this channel, and I think you have made great content in the past. But this isn't a new method at all. It's the basic way most people learn to paint. Base coat, wash, drybrush. And your airbrush tip about adding more paint directly in without cleaning it first is one of the ways you clog your airbrush. Maybe if you're using a bigger needle you could get away with it more, but ideally you should mix your paint separately, and I let it marinate for a few minutes, then re-mix then pour into the cleaned out cup. Clearing clogs takes way more time than cleaning it after each paint. You can mix your paint in a little cup while you clean out the old paint. By the time you're done, so is the pre-mixed paint. Priming over white is also bad advice even if you are going for speed. A zenithal takes just a few more moments, and makes it so that you can leave parts black because they're in shadow. A difficult to access cape can be black on the inside and no one would bat an eye, but if it's stark white you'll need to spend time trying to get your brush inside without leaving marks on the model's back and shoulders. I wish you the best on future videos.
@LylaMev
@LylaMev Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I've never seen anyone talk about speeding up your painting process by using a limited color palette to create atmosphere. I've also never seen anyone talk about adding white to your dry brush paint to increase opacity, though that seems like a likely topic I've missed. I've also never seen anyone give suggestions of watching movies or tv shows for inspiration for your miniatures. Again, that has probably happened and I just haven't seen it. However, that means that the likelihood of all this happening together in a previous video is extremely unlikely. Sure, dry brushing and wash isn't new, but very few techniques are these days. I certainly talk about enough other new things in this video (even if it's just new in combination) to be worth calling a "new technique." In the video, I said you should use a more vibrant base coat. You can't base a vibrant base coat over black. therefore, painting it over white (or some other lighter color) is what is required. Unless you have very opaque paint or want to do tons of layers. If you have stark white showing, you're doing my techniques wrong, and that's not a flaw in my video, that's a flaw in your painting.
@LylaMev
@LylaMev Жыл бұрын
to avoid clogging, I frequently pull the needle the whole way back to blow drying paint from the gun. Apologies for not including that in the video, perhaps that will help you with your airbrush painting!
