Just wanted to say this was one of the easiest-to-follow painting tutorials I've ever seen. I especially welcomed the construction-paper demonstration of how to make color lead into each others, whether you're going lighter or darker on different parts of a miniature. Thanks so much.

Her thought process to show her audience visually the process of high and low light, color gradients…. Learned this years ago in art classes but never seen it explained or shown visually with construction paper and pyramids as examples. Much appreciated will share video with my beginner younger artists,

OK, you just blew my mind. I've seen plenty of people work up from the darkest shadow. I've been starting with basing in 1st shadow, adding deepest shadow then painting up the mid-tone through highlights. The concept of starting with the topmost highlight or closer to it never even occurred to me. Thank you for opening doors.

Wow. Refreshing! I’ve taught painting and airbrushing for 33 years….yeah,ok. I feel old too. You are touching on the really important aspects in an efficient and chronologically very effective way. And I agree with everything your doing! To the point where I think I may have taught you. But I probably didn’t. It’s a big world. I hope many of those who are looking for great tips and scholar - how to’s are find you & your videos. Great work. Really great work. I feel I am listening to an art techniques teacher with many , many years teaching experience. You deserve success. I know all these methods that you’re showing & have taught them many times but somehow I feel I am learning something watching these. Love your sense of humour too.

Thank you for the explanation of how layering and glazing are actually done! And the wonderful examples! I was struggling a bit with the layering, but now I see how layering and glazing work together to get a nice gradation! One of my practice minis has a big robe and it is too dark. I couldn't figure out how to get it to lighten up without just random streaks/areas of different shades. Now I get it! Except I need to buy me some glazing medium! 😄

Awesome video! I am learning a lot from you. There is one thing I am struggling with though. I have slight colour blindness and always have trouble deciding which colour to mix with what to get a smooth gradient. So I usually stick with the Citadel system, where it goes Base, mid-layer, top-layer. But I would love to go more freestyle and be more free (freedom is nice!). So I would need advice on choosing the correct colours for each tone and shadow areas. Or do I just use the Colour Wheel and use the opposite colours for the deep shadows and the neighbors for the darker and lighter parts? Sorry if my question is a bit obvious for most painters, but with my colour blindness I really cannot rely on my senses and need something to hold on to.

Lyla, great tutorials - I just found your page. You have a real knack for simplifying an explanation - which is what makes a great teacher. Any tips on painting really tiny miniatures (less than one inch). Also, why do you paint on the back of your hand? It is 'handy' groan, but is there another reason.
