someone asked Bob Dylan "What song do you love that you wish you had written?" He replied "If I Had A Boat".

This song was on the last playlist my brother ever made for his Barefoot Blues Hour radio show on WERU in Maine. After a 36+ year career on the radio, Mike passed unexpectedly in July 2022. I’d never heard the song but loved Lyle Lovett. Mike also had a show called Boat Talk and was a boat builder and sailor. I listen to this song almost every day, smile and tear up. He had a boat named ‘magine. That your boat? ‘Magine.

I met an older fella named Mr. Harper years back. Loved old western movies and baseball. Good, righteous and God-fearing man, awesome father to his daughter, Ev and a great and true friend to whoever met him. When he passed, Ev asked me to do his funeral. I'm no preacher, just a picker/singer. I asked God to welcome Mr. Harper home and sang this song for him. The whimsy just sorta seemed to fit him well. Miss you, Mr. Harper. Hope you're up there with Roy and Trigger havin' a grand old time.

For some reason I keyed up this song right after scattering my mother's ashes in the waters of the SW Florida mangroves - while my sister and I floated there in our kayaks. Turned out oddly appropriate and will always bring that magic moment back.

Lyle does an intro to this song where he speaks of how his parents encouraged his dreams. We were at a show a few months ago where the audience burst into applause as he talked of his folks and Lyle stopped and took a step back, he was clearly respecting a moment that his fans applauded his parents. Lovett is a wonderful musician but for my wife and I the icing on the cake is how respectful and well mannered he is.

This song has become something of a touchstone for me with the memory of my father-in-law who passed away a few years ago. He was a Navy vet, boat lover, something of a cowboy in Wyoming, and an all-around great person. I miss him a lot and this song always makes me think of him and lets me smile.

Gosh, I love this song. It says so much about freedom, friendship, and self-reliance. A couple of years ago, I bought a boat -- something I had wanted for my entire adult life. As I pulled out from the dock the first time, I thought to myself, "Kiss my a@@...."

Lyle Lovett is such a great artist and humble, decent man . I came to his music late in my life , but he's a main-stay with me now . It seems he never got the recognition he's deserved , but his following is loyal and fully appreciative of this fine artist . George Lewis, Sr

He was at TAMU while I was working on my Ph.D.; I would often see him in the halls of the English building. Would gladly listen to him perform at "Grins" in College Station; they'd "pass the hat" after performances. Was enchanted then by his unassuming manner and obvious talent. . . and he hasn't changed.

I saw he perform live for the first time in 1998. I feel in love with him. I completely understood how Julia Roberts loved this man. He has so much charm. Not to mention the musical genius he is. I went to concerts every chance I got 20 years ago in college. I have seen over 100 live performances. His was the best hands down. I had never heard of him. I have seen him 4 times total. He is amazing! Something about him and his big band makes me feel so tranquil.

I caught this cat July 2 at Humphries by the bay in San Diego. I'd never heard any of his songs or so I thought. My sister gave me some great seats she'd bought and said check this dude out. Wow!!! he was fantastic-what a wonderful musician and funny guy to boot. I am now forever a fan. One of America's greatest singer songwriters and all it took was one listening.

I can't articulate what makes this song so magical and so evocotive of such strong emotions. I guess it's capturing a childlike musing viewed from an adult perspective. Or something...;-) Damn, If I had a boat I'd head on out to Texas. And if I had a pony we'd go listen to ol' Lyle. Me upon my pony on my boat. I'd LOVE to see Lyle & his big band! Stop off in Tyler for briscuit so good it'll make you slap yo' mama, hit Austin for a couple days scoping out new bands & bliss out to Lyle!

In, about 1994, I was at a concert in eastern Canada. The show was over, we were slowly leaving the venue, and that guitar and steel guitar came over the speaker. I was vaguely familiar with him, but a couple of bars into the intro, I knew it was him, and I took in the song. The next day, I went to the record store, and bought Lyle Lovett, Pontiac, and Joshua , Judges, Ruth. Needless to say, I've been a fan ever since; I travelled to Portland, Maine, and saw him and the Large Band in 2004 ( 2 hours with no opening act ).
