For me this is one of the ten most beautiful musical incursions in the history of modern jazz and this record, which I have on vinyl is a masterpiece of Jazz... Lyle is a genius and it's no wonder he paired it with another "point out of curve"...the genius Pat Metheny.

This album "Lyle Mays" and Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" are my two choices for the two "jazz" albums I would want if stranded on an island.

I’ve always love this suite. I was born at ELEMNDORF AIR Base Alaska in 1953. Don’t remember my dad was transferred to Denver in 56 I’ve always wanted to see it in summer. My mother told me it was beautiful. I’m very appreciative of this. Maybe someday😊

I was lucky enough to see this live, but wow to have a recording. Un-freaking-belivable live performance. I started my first year at UNT during Lyle's last year. As a Jazz Ed Major it was almost required to learn all his signature licks of the time what a visionary musician and just great human being. Music like this tells me there is hope in this world.

@@MusicXpro Everything off the Lab 75' album then when the white album came out and American Garage you could hear those tunes all over Bruce hall or across the street in the practice rooms. It was a magical period at NTSU if you can refer to practicing 5-6 hours a day to be a jazz musician where the money does not flow at the rate of output, at least back then. It was all about the music and will play for food concept. Sad that he is now gone at such a young age RIP Lyle

holy shit... beautiful, sublime; I can't even think of the words to describe this. Ascent is my favorite because of the way Lyle develops the main idea before transitioning to the second main idea that effortlessly dances around the beat. That second main idea is also genius, the way it modulates in the middle of the phrase (or, I guess transitioning between phrases. I haven't thoroughly analyzed this suite yet); it does feel a slight bit sudden, but I don't think it's crazy out of place or anything. I *NEED* to find my Lyle Mays transcription book and analyze this suite. It's also interesting because I think I hear inspiration from this album in later music; namely, there's music from the N64 Legend of Zelda games (OoT and MM) that sound inspired from Invocation (specifically, the oboe lead line) and Risk of Rain 2's soundtrack has aspects that mirror some of Lyle's style (also that plucky pulse lead in Ascent is used in Disdrometer and elsewhere in the OST, likely because it's a standard lead sound but I still have my suspicions). Thank you Lyle for this amazing masterpiece... actually, thank you for all your masterpieces. As a composer myself, I will continue to learn from you.

Very cool, thanks so much for posting this. Great to hear this music played live. Did this group ever tour, or was this a "one-off?" Also, for those that were there, was some type of sequencing device being used on "Ascent?" It sounds like there might have been either another musician on stage or some sequencing being utilized. Great sounds as always from Lyle.
