Lyme Regis Fossils

Lyme Regis Fossils

2 жыл бұрын

I am going fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast today. I am fossil collecting East of Lyme Regis- at low tide. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right rocks. Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs the best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. I offer fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast on the following website, so feel free to take a look at the website I made, with our online fossil walks ---------www.lymeregisfossilwalks.com There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in place along the Jurassic Coast.

Thanks very much for that. I was happy I managed to clip that calcite ammonite out of the rock 🪨 and it was pretty perfect 🍀🌀

ironic that they went directly under the cliff to prop that sign up 😃😄
@LymeRegisFossils
@LymeRegisFossils 2 жыл бұрын
That is a very good point Liam, who ever propped it up there must have been too near the cliff. I did see people keeping away from the particular area though. They must have been frightened off by the sign 🪧. The sign will get washed away sadly by the next big spring tide and a good SW WIND 💨

David Attenborough said that Mary Anning taught the finest minds in the country about the science of geology and the fossils of this area . She is well recognised today, Mary Anning is such a good topic for kids to learn about at school

That’s a successful trip then fossil hunting - well done . The mineral is usually from the more recent sea defence work, other times it was used as ships ballast in the old sail ships . Larvakite can polish up really well I have tried doing that with some of the pieces

I’m fascinated by your videos! Looks like a wonderful place to visit! You keep mentioning the iron “pyritees”. Would you please tell us what you’re looking at and describing when you say that term?
@LymeRegisFossils
@LymeRegisFossils Жыл бұрын
Thanks 🙏 very much I look for iron pyrite ammonites, the fossils you commonly find called Promicroceras sp. are preserved in “ fools gold.” This mineral you find in many of the fossils on the beach at low tide - along the Jurassic Coast.
