Love to see women musicians. Bit like Bowie in his later years. Adds another dimension.

I was the "Artist Runner" for this concert. I worked like 20 hours a day for a week straight but when Pete played my boss told me to go watch the show from the photo pit. He said it with a smile that said to me "This is going to be real special" at the same time his smile also said, " you've been doing a great job and you deserve this". It was a very memorable moment and very sacred to me ever since. It was fantastic. Lou Reed was right next to me in the pit watching also really digging it. It is very special to be able to re-live it here, Thank you !! On a side note earlier that day Pete's manager called me to let me know that Taj Mahal would be at Monticello Raceway and need to be picked up as he was doing a few numbers with Pete during the performance. I told him no problem and mentioned to him that Blues Harmonica player Little Sammy Davis was on site and would it be possible to have him join in also. I can still hear his voice in my head, the answer that came back over the line...... " Not bloody fucking likely" (Click). On another side note, I was talking to Taj just behind the stage before Pete's set and a woman who was walking by us suddenly stopped and rushed over telling Taj she was his biggest fan...... she went on & on for about 10 minutes. Hugging and kissing him. He kept looking at me like, "save me" in a joking way. His biggest fan then proceeded to ask him how it felt to be back here after so many years ? He flat out told her with a surprised tone, "I've never been here before in my life" ! She practically knocked him over with her response...... "Get out of here........ You opened the show in '69 ".

Listening to You is pretty special with the choir. I saw The Who perform it in 2000 at their inaugural Teenage Cancer Trust gig at the Albert Hall in London, loads of kids came on stage at the end, it was quite emotional. It's such a hopeful song.

This concert happened twenty years ago! The 60s ended on an optimistic high, followed by the cynicism of the 70s. The 90s ended in a sort of seasoned adult optimism, a resurgence of the Woodstock optimism, and then the new millenium started with 9/11 and sent us on a downward spiral. When Pete was singing "The Kids Are Alright," I was thinking about the kids who who were born too late to experience the optimism of the late 60s or the late 90s, the ones who don't feel excitement with anticipation of a better future, but dread of a far darker future, the ones for whom the post 9/11 world is the only world they have ever known, for whom Trump is the new normal. Just before Pete's set, Joni Mitchell had the stage and ended her set with "Woodstock," a mournful version, sung with the jaded hind sight she articulated with "We got a few things right for a short time, but no such thing as free love, you always pay later..." But Young Joni's vision of getting back to the garden is the one that, with her friends, shifted the foundation of culture toward a better direction. Neil Young still believes in that possible world, still writes new songs expressing his mature optimism. His voice is getting more and more lonely. It's up to the Millenials now, the ones who grew up in a post 9/11 world, to bring us back to the Garden.
