Wow! I could have been the person narrating this story with just a couple of differences. She is a woman, I am a man. She is Kenyan, I am Nigerian. We both had humble beginnings. She left at 18 for Romania on scholarship 16 years ago, I left on scholarship too at the age of 21 to Bulgaria 45 years (!) ago. She studied medicine and specialized in ENT and Plastic surgery. I studied medicine in Greece and specialized in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. She encountered a lot of racism in Romania, I encountered tons of it in Greece. She got very high in the Romanian medical establishment. I am nearing retirement as a Medical Director in the University Hospital of Patras, Greece. No other black person has ever attained such a position in the Greek National Health Care System. We both got to our ultimate goals by share hard work. TLDR: Work hard, be yourself, and you can achieve anything in life. Congratulations to Dr Bayerl for her fabulous achievement!

Parents should ALWAYS educate their children to be kind and report bullying to teachers.

All the stories cannot be the same, everyone has different experiences, the good, bad and ugly.. We learn from all.. Dr B got a lot of favour along the way, and she was a strong person, who has strong faith in God! She suffered pain also, she didn't speak to any physical abuse, but her testimony is full of sad moments and joyful ones also.. She is a conqueror.. God Bless her!

What an inspiring interview! I could not avoid bringing this presentation to the attention of my daughter who has her own cross cultural encounters, having been born in the UK and growing up here, in the Caribbean. There is much from which she, and others, could benefit.

It makes me think of what the Dr is saying I studied in Kazakhstan my first year and spent the rest in my time Moscow. I vividly recall my classmate calling me a derogatory words; As an African I never felt offended because I knew I was dealing with an ignorant individual. Overall I had a positive experience In Ethiopia,I am blessed, with hard effort, ease will come.
