Awesome! Though it's sad to think they were just 3 months away from the plane crash. With all of the crowd shots, this video is also an excellent glimpse back into the youth culture of the mid 1970s. Thanks for the upload, Ace 😊

When you see people in their 60s and 70s, know that this was the music they grew up with.

So glad I was a part of that generation. Nothing like a hot summer day, a crowd of music-loving young folks, and loud Rock N Roll all day long! What memories!

The music was good, the company was good and people knew how to chill and have a good time.

I have heard it said you hear Freebird when you listen to the album version, but you FEEL Freebird when you listen to the live version. I agree.

The band that day was Gary Rossington. Lead Slide guitar - Drk hair Allen Collins. Lead guitar - Blond hair Steve Gaines lead guitar. -shorter hair Leon Wilkeson. Bass Artimus Pyle. Drums Billy Powell Keyboards Ronnie Van Zand. Vocals The concert series held at the Oakland Coliseum during the 70s was called “Day on the Green “. I personally went to over a 1/2 dozen of those all day in the hot sun without much shade shows as a teenager., but not this particular one.

You also get to see the personalities of each member of the band! I'm glad you chose this as your first live performance, now you need to do some of The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again" at Shepperton or "Baba O'Riley" also at Shepperton! Peter Frampton on the Midnight Special "Do You Feel Like We Do"! Charlie Daniels Band "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" live! These are just a few to get you started, I'm sure other people will have other suggestions! Isn't it great watching the crowd being involved!

3 months after this performance, most of the members of the band was killed. The band was never the same. All of the original members are in heaven now.
@kevinsmith44292 ай бұрын
Actually, I believe only 3 died, Ronny Van Zandt, backup singer Cassie Hanes & one of the guitarists.They would have all died if the pilots had done their jobs.They didn't fuel the plane.Thpugjt they had plenty of gas to get to next stop. Ran out of fuel 4 mi short of the runway. Only thing that saved the rest: no fuel, no fire.

The drummer from this performance, Artimus Pyle, is still alive. And one of the Back up singers AKA Honkettes, Leslie Hawkins, is alive also.

Great reaction ! Remember the people at the concert was and is probably one of the only times you got to see and hear your idol rock stars, as they were only on the radio , never on TV , no internet or you tube,back then
@notablindliberal8963 ай бұрын
Gary Rossington played the slide guitar at the beginning, and Allen Collins shredding the last 5 minutes of the song. Allen wrote that solo part of the song at 18. Of course, Steve Gaines on guitar, Leon Wilkeson on bass, Billy Powell on the piano, and Ronnie Van Zant on lead vocals. RIP To all these Skynyrd boys. Thanks for the reaction. Rush live, it's called Best Intro Ever/The Spirit of Radio and it is Phenomenal.

I keep hearing the question about what the difference is between music of 70s and 80s compared to today. It's the connection between the bands and the fans. With Taylor Swift or Pearl Jam being exceptions, how many bands today can pull 100,000+ people together?

I was there in Oakland, and it was as epic as it appears! The memories remain as we had no cameras, cell phones, obviously, sunscreen. Fun, sun, and music! Very carefree time.

Billy Powell didn't join the group until well after the studio version had been released. It became an entirely new song with his addition. I still prefer their Knebworth 1976 performance tho, when Ronnie upset Mick Jagger!
@drenkin3 ай бұрын
I believe Billy joined in 1972; he plays on the original album track, though they surely let him run with it more, live. Ed King posted somewhere that Billy played all the way through every track; the places the keyboards drop out in the recordings...they faded them out in the mix. :-)

True, for the most part, but in this case it was Kathy Johns who asked Allen "If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me" during an argument when they were dating in high school. They were married in 1970 and had 2 daughters. Kathy died in 1980 while pregnant with their third child.
