Neil Young put out a double album title “ A Journey into the Past “ . On its cover was the blurry depiction of what looks to be the KKK riding out of a dark mist . On it were the songs “ Alabama “ & “ Southern Man “ , and others which told the sad story about the southern states of the US . Lynyrd Skynyrd answered with “Sweet Home Alabama “ where he says “ the southern man don’t want him around any how “

And that’s why they were the best. From the stage, 2 died in the crash: Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer) and Steve Gaines (guitarist in red pants), not shown on the stage, Cassie Gaines (Steve’s sister). Most survived the crash because there was no fuel in the plane. Six perished and 20 survived the crash. But, 2 out of 7 musicians died, and 1 of the 3 Honkettes died. Yes, 3 guitarists, and 1 bassist.

LS always played the best live performances of any one ever. One of the few who did it all the time. Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines the guitarist to Ronnie's left and Cassie Gaines one of the back up singers. Passed in place crash. Cassie was Steves sister. Thanks for the reaction. 😊

That drummer, Artimus Pyle is the only band member still alive. Three guitars, one bass (The Guitar Army), piano, drums, lead singer and back up singers (The Honkettes). The plane crash took the lead singer, the guitarist wearing the red pants, his sister a honkett, the road manager, pilot and co-pilot. One of The Honkettes Leslie Hawkins is also still be alive. There are documentaries about the band and the plane crash that can give you all the info you're looking for.

The vast amount of females in the audience were there mostly I assume for Peter Frampton, he rose to fame in 1976 with his live album Frampton Come Alive and he was the most popular man on the planet.. .. Skynyrd was the opening act for his tour in 77 .

R.I.P. to this line-up of Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1977 (Only drummer Artimus Pyle from this footage is alive today)... Ronnie Van Zant (vocals) and Steve Gaines (guitar) died in the '77 plane crash w/ Steve's sister Cassie Gaines (who was a backing singer) Allen Collins (guitar) who co-wrote 'Freebird' was paralyzed in a car accident and passed away in 1990... The other members passed away over time - Leon Wilkeson (bass)... Billy Powell (piano)... and Gary Rossington (guitar) Currently, Lynyrd Skynyrd is touring w/ no classic members ... Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant is the current singer and Rickey Medlocke (guitar) from the band Blackfoot, who helped found Lynyrd Skynyrd before they were signed, are the key members.

Medlocke did not help "found" Skynyrd. The five founding members were Ronnie, Allen, Gary, Bob Burns and Larry Junstrom. Ricky played drums for a short time in '70, '71 while Bob dealt with some personal issues.

This still brings on so many emotions for me. Grew up listening to them. Seemed like it was so sudden we lost them. This song was written when Allen Collins (tall guy) wife said to him one day “if I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me”. That was what inspired the song.

What is so sad, is their plane crashed three and a half months later killing the lead singer, and one of the lead guitar players. and his sister who was one of the back up singers. I was lucky enough to see their last concert the night before the plane crash. Ronnie Van Zant, singer. Steve and Cassie Gaines are the 3 members that died.

This is the greatest performance of "Freebird". It shows Billy Powell's, who had been a roadie for the band, classical piano training. The "3 Guitar Army" of Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines jamming as one, and you cannot exclude Leon Wilkeson on bass who is no less brilliant. Driving the beat on drums is Artimus Pyle, who is a Marine veteran. And of course, lead singer Ronnie VanZant who was at the top of his game. The back-up singers, "the Honkettes" consisted of JoJo Billingsly, Leslie Hawkins, and Cassie Gaines. They are all gone now except of Leslie and Artimus who is still rockin' on with his own band playing many of Skynyrd's greatest songs. A few months later Ronnie, Cassie, and Steve, along with road manager Dean Kilpatrick and two pilots were killed in the plane crash when it went down in rural MS.

Sky, these are the people who died in the plane crash: Ronnie Van Zant, the band's lead singer and founding member Steve Gaines, the band's guitarist and vocalist Cassie Gaines, Steve's older sister and the band's backing vocalist Dean Kilpatrick, the band's assistant road manager Walter McCreary, the pilot William John Gray, the first officer All the other members survived but some were injured: Gary Rossington: The last surviving original member of the band. He suffered a broken leg, two broken arms, and a punctured stomach and liver. Artimus Pyle: The drummer who suffered broken ribs. He and two other survivors reached a farm, where a farmer mistook them for convicts and shot in the air. Pyle convinced the farmer they were crash survivors and needed help. Allen Collins: A surviving band member. Billy Powell: A surviving band member who suffered severe facial lacerations and almost lost his nose. He died of a heart attack in 2009. Leon Wilkerson: A surviving band member.

Not that it's anything to anyone, but after the crash, I worked in a big club after the guys got back to working and they came to play. They had the red guitar and let me hold it in my hands and I couldn't touch the strings. Not sure why. Wanted to. Was a solemn evening but man, I reckon we all got laid that night or close to it, and THAT'S why we sing. God bless America.

There are some great documentaries on KZbin of them. And there are some ominous things in them. Such as Ronnie Van Zandt's (the lead singer) father talking about how as a kid, Ronnie kept saying that he was going to be a singer and wouldn't live to see 30 years old. And sadly it was kinda prophetic, because he passed just a couple of months after this concert at the age of 29.. It's weird to think that I'm now older than he was.

Sky, this is truly one of the most epic live performances ever recorded. The band members were: Ronnie Van Zant - Lead singer Gary Rossington - Slide and rhythm guitar. He's wearing a dark long sleeve shirt and jeans and playing a Gibson SG. Alan Collins - Lead solo. Alan wrote the solo part when he was only 16 years old. He is wearing all white and playing a Gibson Explorer. Steve Gaines - Rhythm and doubles the lead on part. He is wearing a white shirt and red pants and playing a Gibson Les Paul. Leon Wilkeson - Bass guitar Billy Powell - Piano Artimus Pyle - Drums Steve Gaines was from Oklahoma and took over the third guitar part from Ed King (from California) who left the band. Artimus Pyle was from South Carolina and took Bob Burns place as drummer after Bob left the band. Ronnie, Gary, Alan, Leon, Billy and Bob were all from the west side of Jacksonville, Florida and most went to the same high school. The band's name is a dig at their high school physical education teacher, Leonard Skinner, who hassled them about their long hair. On October 20, 1977, Ronnie, Steve, Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister and a backing singer), their road manager and both pilots were killed when the chartered plane they were traveling on to their next concert ran out of fuel and crashed. All the other band members on the plane sustained injuries, many of them severe. Gary Rossington was the last living original member of the band when he passed away last year. Artimus Pyle (Drums) and Lesley Hawkins (Backing singer) are the only members of this version of the band that are still alive. Lynyrd Skynyrd was great in the studio, but their live performances were what really set them apart from other bands. Their level of musicianship was very high and they would practice 10 hours a day to optimize their parts. When the band added Ed King as a third guitarist (replaced by Steve Gaines) they were able to play all of the guitar parts in concert just as in the studio. You might want to check out the other outstanding videos from this concert including "Sweet Home Alabama". Other live performance videos to check out include "T for Texas" and "Call Me The Breeze" from the Knebworth 1976 concert. Additionally, any of the videos from the Convention Hall concert are outstanding live performances. However, bottom line, any pre-crash Lynyrd Skynyrd song/video is a good Lynyrd Skynyrd song/video. Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to tour to this day, however, as all of the original members of the band have passed away and the only two members of this version still alive are not part of the current band, the current version is just a tribute band.

Blistering guitar amidst a blizzard of notes, those guys were going overtime and one of the best 3 guitar onslaught ever! Legendary show. The Outlaws do a similar epic in Green Grass and High Tides, the 20+ minute live version should be heard if you have time, the studio original is incredible as well if you are unfamiliar with it. My favorite band back in the late '70s. Everything seemed so much better then; people were kinder and more tolerant, and the music was more enjoyable. Living in the moment rather than watching it through a cell phone camera. Everyone loved seeing an American flag, and everyone respected. Everyone loved the rebel flag as well, because while everyone wasn't from the south, everyone had a bit of rebel in them, long before the intolerant conformists came along and decided to be offended by everything.

I'm thinking that Neil Young shirt that Ronnie is wearing was a public support of Neil that there was no ill will between the two. Neil had written songs about "Alabama" and "Southern Man" that were a critique Skynyrd thought was a little harsh if you listen to the lyrics in "Sweet Home Alabama". This concert is classic indeed. Peter Frampton played a set on the same day which is why you see so many cute girls in the audience, LOL!

A terrific line up: the Outlaws opened; next was Santana; followed by Lynyrd Skynyrd; and headliner Peter Frampton. Yes most of the ladies were there to primarily see Frampton who was at his peak. But Skynyrd just KICKED BUTT!, so the group I was with left after just a couple of Peter’s songs. Yes those were the days before cell phones(and even the wide use of Bic lighters ;-) so one had to just experience and be in the moment- on whatever your chosen mood enhancing substance.

don't worry about sounding bad (you do not), we all have our bad days, and we can understand, shit happens. You just watched something historic here, it was the last show with the original band members. The plane crash happened roughly 3 months after this show. You're right: 1 vocalist, 1 drum, 1 bass & 3 guitars. As for cell phones in shows, I'm older, so when going to a show, I don't bring it--too dangerous anyway, as I often come back with bruises, minor cuts, smashed toes or a bit worse (missing tooth at Metallica's Québec Magnetic). Don't want to break the phone, so it stays at home.
