I danced with my grandmother at my first wedding, because she taught me to be a simple man. I still tear up every time I hear or play this tune. She passed in '21. Grandpa may have taught me to be a businessman, but Grandma taught me to be human.

My favorite Skynyrd songs are, "Four Walls of Raiford" & "The Ballad of Curtis Loew." Both are sad & hauntingly beautiful. Mom told us she's always thought of my brother (Aug '88-Feb '21) whenever she heard this song. After he lost the battle with his demons, we played this at his Celebration of Life. Now, I also think of my lil bro wherever I hear this song, no matter which version. The acoustic version by Shinedown brings tears to my eyes every time.

There are musical artists in every generation but the 70's were special. They wrote, played and sung their own music without auto tune. One great band after another.

Ronnie and Allen wrote this after Allen's grandmother passed. Ronnie, Allen and Gary were all childhood friends, I'm sure they knew each other's families well.
@jamesmontgomery952320 күн бұрын
It was Ronnie's grandmother who passed away. He and Gary met up at Ronnie's and talked about Gary's mother's advice to him and Ronnie's grandmother to him. After Gary left, Ronnie wrote it in the shower. Ronnie never wrote lyrics down, he remembered them in his head.

Shinedown did an incredible cover of this song. Apparently the drummer or guitarist from Shinedown had a child with the daughter of Ronnie Van Zant, the singer from Skynyrd.

Plus, Brent Smith knows Ronnie's widow well. He actually asked her if it was ok to cover the tune as a tribute to Skynyrd.

It makes my day to see people really recognize the genius in Lynyrd Skynyrd and it was everyone of those guys and All the Credit to The Lady's, The Honkettes as Ronnie called em and this band is my absolute favorite band ever ! And believe it or not very few people in this generation of younger people finds or recognizes the true genius and all the songs that this band does . If you'll pay attention at all to 99% of their songs, everyone of em speaks volumes about whatever the song is written about . That Smell was wrote about Gary Rossington wrecking a car and breaking his arm and some of the lyrics are, They call you prince charming, cant speak a word when you're full of the ludes, Quaaludes...pills or The Needle and The Spoon , dont mess with the needle and the spoon , take trip to the moon , gonna take you away ! Mr. Saturday Night Special gotta barrel that's blue and cold, aint good for nothing, but put a man 6 feet in a hole . Now they wasn't antiguns and thaya fact and far as I know the majority of em were very conservative but their songs always got the point across. Anyways Thank you for giving credit where it's really due and I just subbed to your channel

RVZ was a lyrical genius. He went barefoot on stage,never wrote down the lyrics to His songs & ran this band with his fist. Literally. They practiced 12 hours days in the Florida swamp in a non air- conditioned cabin. Told family members & others his limit was 30 he died at 29 in the crash. LS was unique they had 3 lead guitarsts all could & played rythem of chorse. They were the band that legend stories on the road were told but all true. They whop ure ass no problem. All were Great musicans.
