The guitarist in red is Allen Collins who co-wrote this as well as "free Bird." The guy in the black coat playing the Les Paul is Gary Rossington, one of the original members and last man standing. The bearded guy in the vest playing the Strat is Steve Gaines. His sister Cassie was one of the back up singers. The Gaines siblings perished in the 1977 plane crash along with Ronnie Van Zant. The Drive-by Truckers wrote a great tribute called "Cassie's Brother" about her convincing the band to give her wildly talented baby brother am audition to fill in the slot vacated by the magnificent Ed King.

Steve Gaines was headed for the spotlight at the time of the crash. He was changing things in LS as Ronnie had him doing more vocals. Do a search for him and find him with his band Crawdad. He wrote and performed I Know A Little while with them before recording it again with LS.

It's a damned shame we only had 5 years with these guys. This was probably the GOAT Rock Band if they hadn't crashed in that plane. They were already close to the Beatles for most top 10 songs. This is still my favorite rock band of all time. Only 5 years? Really?!

This was from Lynard Skinner debut album. True story of Ronnie VanZant, underage in a bar, with a fake ID, dancing with the wrong lady. From the beginning, just a great rocking tune, with wonderful flow, and rich vocals. Fabulous. Great reaction Harri, definitely a 50's vibe. Allen Collins is the guitarist In red. He survived the plane crash, but had a fatal car crash that killed his girlfriend, and it left him in a wheelchair, in about 1986. He lost his wife while she was carrying their third child; she hemorrhaged, and he just never got over her death. He died from pneumonia in 1990. From this stage, Ronnie (lead vocals) and Steve Gaines lost their lives. The drummer ran through the swamp and woods to get help. Steve is the only one with the shorter hair, and was wearing the denim vest.

The guy in red was Allen collins. The other very popular video of a live show they did in Oakland Coliseum not long before the plane crash, but of freebird, Alan Collins in that one is in all white. But at any rate they normally just had two guitars plus Leon Wilkerson absolutely killing it on base. Wish they did show him for a little bit just going off. The guy's a monster. But he was also singing backing vocals so they were just such a talented band I mean they had all the pieces. But they had just added Stephen Gaines and so he was the younger looking dude

Yes, it is a shame that this band's plane crashed in October, 1977. Following the original band's demise Lynard Skynard, Gold and Platinum was released on December 25, 1979, and made them even more popular in the early 80's. One of the best ever greatest hits albums. This was the version of Gimmie Three Steps that was on that album. Anything on that double album is worthy of a Harri Best reaction. All the best to you and your channel in 2023.🇨🇦🎸🎸🎸🎸😯🎉

Very insightful reaction vid! They were a GREAT band! That plane crash in October 1977 killed guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister, Cassie, a background singer and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, as well as the pilots, and a manager. The others were never the same after that trauma. Their lead guitarist, Allen Collins lived a short, star-crossed life, littered with DUIs even after his license was revoked. A story told by a fellow musician, Michael Ray Fitzgerald puts that into perspective, "Collins was to “sit in” with us that night at the club. Word got around, and the place was packed with Skynyrd fans. Collins emerged drunk, from the bathroom, stumbling up onto the bandstand, which had a railing in front. Collins couldn’t even get his guitar - a very valuable 1957 Gibson Les Paul - on. I had to hold it up for him and fasten his strap. "I take the mic and ask the audience to welcome Allen Collins to Vidalia. The crowd roars. "Collins grabs the mic and yells, 'You buncha fuckin’ punks, I’ll kick anyone’s ass in this room right now!' "The place grew menacingly quiet, with people looking at each other wondering what to think. "Assuming this was some kind of redneck humor, I grab the mic and say, “Can y’all say ‘Fuck you, Allen’?” “Fuck you, Allen!” the audience roars in unison. "Everyone laughs, including Collins." In late January, 1986 he was driving with his fiancee, Debra Watts, and turned his new Thunderbird over. Both were thrown from the driver's side window. Watts was killed and Collins was paralyzed from the waist down and charged with DUI manslaughter. He died of pneumonia in 1990 at the age of 37. It's sad that so often great talent also comes with personality flaws that eventually doom that person to an early death.

If you want to see the amazing skills of Billy Powell on the piano, listen to "They Call Me The Breeze" after he joined the group. Free Bird at Knebworth is the live performance to watch. The Rolling Stones were scheduled to follow LS. They had released a new album called Hot Licks and Mick had a tongue catwalk built on the stage. All the other performers were strictly forbiddened to use that catwalk. During the Free Bird solo, Ronnie has his guitar army all over that catwalk. The crowd became so frenzied, the Stones refused to come out for hours till they settled down! The guitarist in red, Allen Collins is my favorite to watch too!! I could watch him all day! He survived the plane crash but his life was full of tragedy on top of the crash. His wife died from a miscarriage and later he crashed a car that killed his girlfriend and left him paralyzed. He died in his 30's from pneumonia.

The 70s rock band music is eminently suited for live shows. It is as if each instrument is going for its own natural play, and together as a whole the whole music sounds as if it is play in a faraway spot within the deep recess of nature. Just a minimal microphone amplification is need which makes the whole rendition very soothing played just next to nature's call.

Their plane crashed about 45 minutes from my home. The plane was defective. Gas gauge did not work. Was to be scrapped.

If you enjoy southern rock and maybe hearing the stories from the actual men and women, including the Skynyrd plane crash, check out the book "Rebel Yell" by Michael Buffalo Smith. The whole book is 99% taken from interviews with all of these southern rock heroes

I read that they had sufficient fuel before they departed, but partway to the destination they developed a fuel leak eventually causing the crash.
