It speaks volumes that a song about living simply is the one that so easily transcends all the complications (race, age, status, etc) that we construct around ourselves. It really shows just how unnecessary all those constructions are. When it comes to living a fulfilling life, none of that matters one bit.

Shortly after Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother died and taking some advice Gary Rossington's mothers gave to her son, they got together in Van Zant's apartment and started telling stories about them. Rossington came up with a chord progression, and Van Zant wrote the lyrics based on advice the women had given them over the years. They wrote it in about an hour.

I was raised by a single mother from the age of 2, and she really held it down the best she could, but man sometimes a young boy just needs someone (a grandmother, a mother, in my case a father) to sit them down and just let them know everything will be alright. It gets easier with time and even though I'm turning 40 in a few months... the song, the words, his voice... it all just hits me a little too hard, I couldn't help but tear up writing this. I learned throughout my years life is hard, it's just hard for everyone. I try to do my best to not make it any harder on myself or for anyone else. I dunno man I guess just love the people who you have in your life, even if it's just a hand on their shoulder... it goes a long way.
@KnowbuddiezBusiness3 жыл бұрын
@@livefreeprintguns I loved your comment, especially the part about “even if it’s a hand on the shoulder”. For some it’s hard to show love so they show it by putting a hand on your shoulder, arm or like my Daddy does when I’m laying with my feet up, he’ll pinch my big toe. I’m 51 now and he still does this, and I can feel it in my heart when he does it.

Ronnie Van Zandt was an amazing singer, they said he would sing barefoot so he could feel the energy of the crowd. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the only band I have ever heard that sounds as good live as they do on a record.
@biggusgibbus81442 жыл бұрын
I think they sounded better live. First saw them in 1976, and didn't even know who they were. I went to see Ted Nugent. Ronnie came out on the stage barefooted, took a swig of Jack Daniels, put it on the stage by the mic, and introduced the band. They then proceeded to totally blow Ted Nugent out of the water. I was hooked. I was also at their last show in Greenville, SC, in October of 1977. We got the news the next day, and all my friends came to my house to grieve together.

I'll say this. As far back as I can remember whenever this song would play my mom would say this is her song to me. To this day she still says it. I'm 32 now and this song can't play without me thinking of my mom and the advice the lyrics hold. It is good advice and in many ways I can see how it has influenced my life and my decisions. Especially when I finally grew up enough to forget I already knew everything. I've been incredibly blessed in my career and life and have probably lost sight of that wisdom at times, but I've hit bottom a few times and had to rebuild too. And those times are when these lyrics really hit home.
