At the heighth of Skynyrd, right before the plane crash, they were considered at their peak. Steve Gaines, who is playing slide guitar on this, often drew comparisons to Duane Allman for his acumen on the slide guitar during this time period. Balls to the wall, kick @$$ rock and roll...

Ronnie had the band ready to rule the world that day ! He wanted to blow the Rolling Stones off their own stage and they did it. Aside from the band being tight and strong- can you believe the quality sound mix they got from this show ? You can practically pick out every drum hit, string pick and keys stroke - but all in proportion. This concert video is awesome except that they dont show Billy Powell bearing down on the keyboard during any of his solos. You know shit is about to get serious when Leon tosses the cigarette !

Well, you’re too young to have heard a lot of this. Thanks to KZbin, you younger folks are discovering what we already know. Skynyrd are music gods down here in Georgia. A lot of their really good songs didn’t get air play because they were too long or they didn’t fit the mold of these top 40 radio stations. We had an Atlanta station, 96 ROCK who did play it. My older brother’s band practiced in our basement and I actually got tired of hearing Skynyrd, at one time because they practiced over and over. This is one of my favorite bands, without a doubt. I enjoyed your reaction to this; thank you!

Wrong, The Ballad of Curtis Lowe, Four Walls of Rayford, Call Me The Breeze, and, of course, Simple Man. Simple Man ranks right up there with Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird to many of us Southerners I could go on and on.I live in Ga, Skynyrd was from Jacksonville, Fl, with is located at the bottom of my state, Allman Brothers are from Macon, Ga, middle of Ga, and Marshall Tucker is from North Carolina, right at the top my state. They played in Atlanta a lot. Marshall Tucker: I Heard It in A Love Song, Can't You See, Fire On The Mountain. Hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I did in the early 70's. I always love live versions best.

best live band ever!!! They blew the stones off the stage at this British festival, and the stones weren't happy! Mic J. told everyone to stay off the tongue of the stage, OR ELSE!!! Ronnie VZ made his guitarists go out on it during freebird, because of this. You can see the hesitation in the guitarists, but Ronnie dragged them out on it. Brilliant!! Pissed the stones off, and they had to follow skynyrd on stage and from all reports, were horrible. Music critics at the time, were saying Skynyrd blew the stones off the stage! Impossible to follow these guys, as a live act, for anyone.

I believe when he has that smile ,he was looking over at Steve Gaines on guitar, he had only been with them abt 10 wks. I think he is thinkin this guy is playin his ass off & we night have passed on him. His sister was Cassie Gaines one of the Honkettes , back uo aingers fot some songs. Ed King had left in 1975 & they were looking for replacement & they were playing in Kansas City, I believe & Cassie said my brother is really good guitar player, he is playin down at a bar here, they were thinkin sure your brother is great, she said no he is really good, here is a tape. They didn't listen but Cassie kept asking so they finally said ok he can jam on 1 song tonight. Steve shows up & they went over a lil of the song, & Steve said ok ok think ai got it. They thought this guys isn't even interested but they let him come out, told sound guys if he sounds awful turn him off, told Steve if you don't know song just act like you are playing. They get to T for Texas, he comes out, stands with Gary & Allen & they are just doing what they do, just straight guitar, Steve takes a slide out of his pocket & starts playin his ass off, they gave him a solo part after they heard him & invited him to join band that night. I am so glad he got that time to play, write w/Ronnie & even sing w/Ronnie before he died. Any footage I see of Steve he is having the time of his life. Skynyrd had their 3 guitar army back, even better IMO. Loved Ed King but Steve more bluesy player & could actually sing lead. They were both great, just different styles

I know I'm a little late to the party here 4 years ago but I'm on a Skynyrd Marathon came across your video and loved it! What a cool riffat starts with and then when the bass and drums kick in is just like in your face pounding amazing! Leon Wilkinson on bass, rest his soul and Artimus Pyle on drums who's the only guy left from all of these amazing musicians still alive! Sadly Gary rossington died in March of this year 2023 was the last original remaining member of Skynyrd he's the guy that does that sweet beautiful amazing slide guitar on Freebird and also wrote tons of other amazing songs with like solo for Tuesdays Gone and Gimme 3 Steps. And personally I love how Ronnie Van Zant the lead singer would just come out and stand there like a champion, didn't jump around like a maniac and dance and act like a fool just commanded the stage. How about your reaction to "I know a little" which was written by Steve Gaines with Ronnie Van Zant the most amazing chicken pickin' guitar I've ever heard! Sadly they both died along with his sister Cassie Gaines in the plane crash. 😢

Ronnie Van Zant was a perfectionist and insisted that the band always play to a crowd as if they were in the recording studio and everthing had to be spot on. There's a better live version of this song on KZbin, IMO. The live video is in black and white but it's clear as a bell, and it's shot at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey in 1977 about 3 months before their ill-fated plane crash in October of that same year.
