The piano player Billy Powell was originally a roadie for the band, they didn't even know he could play piano. As soon as they found out they fired him immediately as a roadie and asked him to join the band.

Billy Powell was a classically trained pianist, and was working as one of the band’s equipment managers (roadies), when one day he started playing a musical from Chopin while the band was taking a break from recording. None of the members knew that he actually played the piano whatsoever.

As a roadie he was loading or unloading equipment and just took a break. Turned out to be his lucky break because he sat down and just played a bit to chill out. Billy Powell and Gary Rossington were/are my favorites. They had a beautiful approach and it connected with the listener in a solid straight line.

Many groups won't, or can't, reproduce their studio sound live. "Dire Straights," for example, but bands the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Allmans, do it perfectly. I think it's what fans actually pay to hear.

They had more than their fair share of troubles with addiction, in band politics and tensions. In the beginning, they were one of the hardest working bands on the touring circuit. They're not country per sae, more Southern rock/soul/blues. Sweet home Alabama! And their so called affiliation with the confederacy, was just a marketing ploy introduced by management. I think the backup vocalists were hired for the last album, but would sing the back catalogue also when performing live.

And to talk about gun violence in Mr 38 special and alcohol and drug abuse in that smell...just unbelievably rare and special ❤❤❤

Nah, they are Southern Rock, and more Blues influence than country, but I am now splitting hairs. They and The Allman Brothers are the kings of Southern Rock. Also, the reason there is a lot of piano in Southern songs is because most every home had a piano back in the 40s and 50s when these artists were kids. You seem to really like them, you must be from Southern Romania. 😂 And a nice nod to Margaret Mitchell. The reference is really profound, basically my girl outgrew me ..again.

@@667neighbourofthebeast your almost right but it was Free Bird that brought them a much deserved international fame. As far as Tuesday's Gone it was one of their best along with Simple Man however; you don't see many live versions of either of these two songs. What cemented Free Birds fame was their concert over in England (kenninsgton i believe) when they were part of the Rolling Stones concert. This is when Lynyrd Skynyrd blew the Rolling Stones away.

@@dakotaconners107 Aha, cool, thanks. What I understand, is that Free Bird (1973) and most of their early catalogue didn't get much recognition (via air-play on popular radio networks.) until the release of Sweet home Alabama (1974). After Sweet home Alabama, is when the networks and public, other than their established fan base, started taking real interest in them. Cheers for the info. Skynyard has definitely influenced the music scene, and landscape, for decades.

Lynyrd Skynyrd were basically a Southern rock band, but with strong country and blues influences. Keyboardist Billy Powell was a classically trained musician, which added another dimension to their sound, and the backing vocalists (The Honkettes) brought a strong gospel influence into the band. The whole gig was filmed by in-house cameras installed at Winterland, and they recorded some amazing artists and performances. In fact, they captured the original raw unedited version of The Last Waltz concert by The Band in 1976, which was also professionally filmed by Martin Scorsese and later had a lot of overdubbing work done on it to correct mistakes and cover sound quality problems.

Your attempts to categorize Lynyrd Skynyrd are fun. I have lived in the southeastern part of the US all of my life and bands like Skynyrd are called "southern rock" (as stated below). My belief is that these guys grew up in the rural south, listening to the country music that their parents were listening to. Then, they heard rock and roll, and, put their own personal spin on it - as well of the accents that you liked with the lead singer. I think with the guitars that it leans more towards rock than country.

Ronny Van Zant was an onery ole Blackfoot Indian. He was known for being a bully and when he was trying to recruit Cassie Gaines brother Steve into the band Steve climbed a tree to get away from him. Because Steve was a nerdy guy and he thought knowing Ronny's reputation he was looking to beat him up. But he just wanted him to join the band.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is part of the Sothern Rock that inherited a great tradition of piano playing and was influenced by FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama. Look up Little Richard, whose piano style was copied and modified by the Beatles in their St Pepper's album, and Jerry Lee Lewis whose playing was legendary.

Great reaction! If you want to see a crowd reaction to Skynyrd, check out “Freebird “ live at Oakland. I don’t think you will be disappointed and I look forward to seeing you react to it.
