The message was deep in this one. The song is about leaving home to follow your dreams only to return to a family that is deceased. Wow! I truly enjoyed this beautiful song! I hope you all do too! Happy Sunday.. Love y'all💋🤘🏽💕

Ronnie Van zant dropped out of school, dreaming of a life in music. This tune, after success, was a response to his father, who believed he should just get a regular job.

I know that Ronnie Van Zandt , who wrote this song , died before both his parents . I don't know if he wrote the song for a friend a band member or what , might be worth researching . LS never made a bad song , but my least favorite is " Ain't No Good Life " , a little known song that's also a damn good one . If you like obscure tunes , this one is definitely top of the list . Down and dirty blues with the screaming guitars you love . My favorite is "White Dove " , it made me cry a little while ago , after a few years of not hearing it . peace

You can feel it in your soul baby. Best band in the world blessed to have been a teenager in the 70's. We had the best bands stadium concerts that went on all day. And to see others that have found what we knew was great for years does an old soul good.

His father was still alive named Lacy Van Zant, Ronnie the lead singer/writers dad. Nonetheless it’s a very heartfelt and genuine song that has always felt very emotional and even foreboding given the plane crash and horrible result. One of my top 5 Skynyrd tunes. Thank you for reacting, its great to keep it alive.

Loved your reaction. I was a kid during this time and I was devastated when the plane crash ended it all in 1977 for them. They had so much good stuff and they were so filled with soul, and even coming from the deep south in a redneck culture, they had a lot of progressive values but basically they just spoke to The Human Condition and they did it so well.

With Steve Gaines giving the band a real new freshness that hadn't been there for sometime as the newest member of Skynyrd, it wasn't the sky but the stratosphere that was now the limit for Lynyrd Skynyrd! Gaines had literally only been with the band less than a month when Skynyrd performed and engineering God Tom Dowd recorded their 3 straight nights of live performances at the Fox Theater in Atlanta that would later become their 1976 platinum live release "One More From The Road." Gaines was so new to the band at the time of the live recording at the Fox that he was actually forced to turn down his guitar and fake playing a couple of the songs on the Skynyrd set list he hadn't had time to practice or learn with the band yet because of their relentless touring schedule. But by the time the band would head back into the studio months later, all of the "new guy" stuff that had plagued Gaines in Atlanta was long since a forgotten memory and he was burning up the stage with his picking night in and night out, more than holding his own with legendary guitarists Gary Rossington & Allen Collins who were original members who'd been with Skynyrd since the band's inception in the early days. The heavy influence of Steve Gaines, who himself was an incredible guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, can be heard sprayed all over the bands final studio release "Street Survivors", as Gaines co-wrote many of the album's hits with singer Ronnie Van Zant, which included the songs You Got That Right, I Never Dreamed, Ain't No Good Life, and I Know A Little. Publicly and privately, band leader Ronnie Van Zant marveled at the talent of their new guitarist Steve Gaines, once proclaiming "the band would all be in Steve Gaines's shadow one day." Street Survivors was released on October 17th, 1977. On October 20th, 1977 only three days after the release of the Street Survivors album and only five shows into their most successful headlining tour to date, Skynyrd's Convair CV-300 ran out of fuel near the end of their flight headed to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Though the pilots would attempt an emergency landing on a small airstrip, the plane crashed into a swampy forest five miles northeast of Gilsburg, Mississippi. Singer/songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, Guitarist Steve Gaines, his older sister, back-up singer Cassie Gaines, long time Assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and long time pilots Walter McQueary and William Gray would all die on impact. The other band members, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Leon Wilkeson, Billy Powell, Artimus Pyle, Leslie Hawkins, as well as road manager Ron Eckerman and the road crew personal would all survive the crash, but most all had serious injuries. Guitarist Gary Rossington was probably the most seriously injured of the survivors, having nearly every bone in his body broken as well as a punctured stomach and punctured liver. 10 days later, Street Survivors would be certified gold and would later go double platinum. Had the horrible plane crash not happened in October, 1977 and had that same entire group stayed together without anyone quitting so the band would've experienced real stardom and longevity, there's not a doubt in my mind that Lynyrd Skynyrd would've ultimately become to fans here in the United States what The Rolling Stones or The Beatles became to fans in the United Kingdom.

Love this song. I see some places have this being on the Second Helping album 1974 which is not true. It was recorded at Muscle Shoals in 1971-72 not sure exactly when because they recorded 17 total songs but because of manager Alan Walden(some might know him as the Badman) shopped it around to abt 9 record labels & in mot of them he twisted tape while threading it, so songs were playing on back side of tape & had very muffled sound to it , how none of these labels didn't figure that out blows my mind because I did it myself & I was a rookie 1st time threading one own & somehow got it twisted & it sounded like it was being played in a cave or you were hearing it on phone in the background so they passed. One or 2 was interested in Free Bird but said all the songs way too long & wanted Free Bird but cut to 3 1/2 min max,😀😀. This song never recorded but put out in 1978 called First & Last then in 1997 on a remastered bonus Second Helping reissue & finally in 1998 the Complete Muscle Shoals album put out. I try to clear this up wherever I can because I repeatedly see it listed as coming out on Second Helping in 1974. One of my favorite Skynyrd songs. 90% of Ronnie's songs were abt himself, a friend or family. As people have stated Ronnie died way before either his parents of the 2 tombstones, Lacy Van Zant often called the father of Southern Rock & he was very supportive of all 3 sons in their bands. Yes Lacy was always supportive of their music but he really wanted Ronnie to finish high school & he dropped out to sing his songs. His dad could have called him a fool or a useless fool in heat of thr moment argument but from what I have heard Ronnie always felt like he let his dad down. So could be the idea of making his dad proud & would it all be worth it of they hit it big only o come he & find that the man he most wanted respect from was gone. It really is a beautiful song. Lacy Van Zant couldn't have been prouder of Ronnie, his oldest son & the 1st to make it big of his 3 sons. When plane crash happened, he went to Mississippi to identify Ronnie & he went into the rooms of all the survivors, not just the band members but all the crew that were all like family & he wanted to check on each one. Each time the person would ask him what abt Ronnie & Lacy said Ronnie's fine, so you need to take care of yourself & get well. Some didn't know for a few days learning from their families. That was a man with courage to have to go see each person who did live & tell them his dead son was fine! Sorry, these guys my fav band & can't get enough of their music so I tend to run on

Not bad for a demo that didn't make an album at the time but added years later on reissues. This was a "what if" song as papa Van Zant was very supportive of all 3 sons in the music business. Lacy Van Zant lived to see all 3 sons make it big in the music world

One of the best lyrical songs ever wrote. It’s what everyone dreams of. Money, fame, and proving someone wrong. Especially someone’s opinions you value highly (being your parents). To say he worked his whole life to get what he wanted and not spend time with his mom and pops. And when he comes back to show all what he had didn’t mean anything.
