Suspicious fuse holder repair at 34:50. Putting a new one in and replace the fuse with a correct one that isn't soldered like it should be is a good idea to make it safe. You do a great job with logic solving and repairs Bob Ross 'er Ronnie. Damn great video if I do say so myself.

When looking for a shorted socket/lamp, if you can get yourself a current limited power source that you can ramp up the voltage to 6V. Then use a thermal camera to see what is heating up (you don't need to get to 6V...you aren't trying to light lamps, you are just trying to find the short). Oh and the quickie formula for identical things in parallel is (resistance)/(number of identical things) so...if you have 4-Ohms and 20 of them, then 4/20 = .2
@DavidWilliams-rn6uq
@DavidWilliams-rn6uq Жыл бұрын
Hey Ron - here’s a trick for you to find a short. With a good ohm meter, measure the resistance on your string on one end, it’ll be a low number. Now measure the resistance on the other end. It’ll be a low number too. However, whichever one reads a bit lower is an indicator that the short is closer to that end. It helps if you have a good low-range meter. Now measure in the middle of the string… should be in between the two readings if your shirt is close to one end. This trick works because you are measuring the resistance of the wires on the playfield. It’s hard the first time you try it, but I’ve found shorts on PCB’s this way. It works great!
@Sakscratch

That's a slippery slope way to troubleshoot though. A lot of variables at play when trying to accurately measure low resistance paths like that...
@eDoc2020
@eDoc2020 Жыл бұрын
An easier way with cheap equipment is to power it up using a current-limited supply. Then you can look at the voltage in different points of the circuit. As you start at the injection point and move away the voltage will go down, when the voltage levels off you have passed the short. For a pinball game like this a dim bulb tester should work well as the current limiter, although you may need to manually pull in the hold relay or similar to complete the circuit.

I can teach you a trick, to find a short in your play field lights. Get yourself a 4 ohm 10 watt resistor. Replace the fuse with this resistor. The resistor will limit the current to 1.5 amps on the 6volt circuit. Now use your volt meter and probe across the lighting circuit in a couple different places. The voltage will get lower the closer you are to the short. So keep measuring until you find the lowest reading and you be in the area of the short. FYI the resistor will get hot.
@Marzec309
@Marzec309 Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, you'll have to use a low volt range on your meter. Preferably a mV range if it has it.

For your resistance example, yes, it was 2 ohms for two parallel 4 ohm resistors. Formula is Rt=(R1+R2+Rx)/(R1*R2*Rx). For series resistors, just add them all together. Capacitance is exactly the opposite. But same formulas.

I think the 10 amp fuse may be too small. If those lamps are actually 4 ohms in a 6 volt circuit, you're going to be drawing 1.5 amps per lamp (I=V/R). It would only take seven lamps to blow it even during normal conditions.
@OhRonaldo
@OhRonaldo Жыл бұрын
The 32V fuse would almost certainly work just fine. There's a miniscule chance that a blown 32V fuse could arc across the blown gap in the element on a 50V line. Better to use a 50V or higher but of course but... Ohms in a parallel circuit. If the components are all the same resistamce as in your case, just divide by the number of parallel components, so (3) 4-Ohm would be 1.333 Ohm, 4 would be 1 Ohm etc. The actual formula is to add the inverted resistances together so that: 1/Rtotal = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3... 1/Rtotal = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 1/Rtotal = 3/4 Flip it over Rtotal = 4/3 = 1.3333 Same formula works for dissimilar resistances.
@HyperMario64
@HyperMario64 Жыл бұрын
You are right, resistances in parallel have their conductances summed up. Same thing for inductors which have their admittances summed up. Capacitors get summed up in parallel and in series their elastance (!!, just looked that up) get summed up.

Parallel resistance in your drawing would be (1÷4ohms)+(1÷4)+(1÷4) etc.. Each resistance reading is divided by 1 then add all those values together to equal total resistance. Remember 47s and 44s have different resistance.
@Sakscratch
@Sakscratch Жыл бұрын
Right, it's called the 'reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals' and is the reason that the axiom of "current follows the path of least resistance" is an accurate, albeit widely misunderstood, statement. The path of least resistance is the path of all parallel loads. This is because each parallel load LOWERS the overall resistance. That's why all of the light bulbs that are connected in parallel light up together instead of just the one bulb which happens to have been manufactured with the single "path of lowest resistance" lighting by itself.
