A technique tribute to Lyoto Machida in his bout against Rich Franklin. Forgot that it's the first time I witnessed a front-kick lead to a finish!

Being from a Shotokan background and watching Machida, it looks like kickboxers actually believe his stance is magically pushing and pulling them here and there. I remember feeling kinda that way, first few times of sparring, and I had been practicing katas and drills for a few months. These guys had no idea how to understand Machida at first, lol.

Great breakdown. Also, I would like to add that Lyota utilizes many different "traditional" stances when he is fighting. I see front stance, horse stance, etc. I think that this is one fighter that proves that traditional martial arts are useful in a real fight situation.

Lyoto is a master-class fighter. Still, there are people who says shit about him. He is great. When he started UFC he was unstoppable. Showed what traditional shotokan karate is about. People tend to value only the kyokushin for its aggressiveness, but true shotokan is strong a martial art. Timing(tainosen, senosen, gonosen), distance control (maai), fast attacks and no telegraphing.

The front kick is very under appreciated because of its simplicity!. Yet the same simplicity makes it very effective. That being said, I must say that even karatekas are not using it properly at times they could have. Machida is a genius, I never get tired of watching his fights. Thank you for sharing this bro🙏🙏❤❤

The left hand at 3:24 made him partially drop his hands. At that point he was already hurt. He then pushed him into the ropes. The kick made him completely drop his hands, but it was the left cross at 3:30 after the kick that knocked Franklin out. It was the kick that set that up.

This is a testament to how talented Lyoto really is. Franklin was "elite" a bit later on, and Lyoto was able to predict him and read him like a book. The guy has been doing this for so long that he understands technique unlike anybody else at the time could. Franklin couldnt anticipate anything Lyoto was doing.

@nicholasnj3778
@nicholasnj3778 9 жыл бұрын
Kungfoo Joey more often then not when you get two "bangers" it is because they don't have the skill level of a top fighter. I never really viewed the "Bonner" / "Griffin" fight as two great fighters fighting but two guys with a lot of heart and lack of skill (top skill) ...
@KungfooJoey
@KungfooJoey 9 жыл бұрын
Nicholas NJ I totally agree mate, its got to the point in the modern game that a fighter can completely shut down his opponent without making a move! He just lets him know he sees everything so he cant throw anything! The next level is rare and heart can still win fights, it just wont get you to the big show anymore.
@I_Of_Providence
@I_Of_Providence 9 жыл бұрын
Kungfoo Joey disagree, Shayna Baszler has no heart and she's fought multiple times on the "big show". now a days you don't even need heart and you can make it into the UFC depending on what division you fight in.

I know that you'll probably never see this, but thank you. I'm an author trying to do realistic fight scenes, and since I'm not a fighter myself, it's been hard. Your analysis videos help out so much. I learn about what people do wrong, right, and gain some insight into how a fighter might analyze their opponent all at once. I can do it visually, with your annotations helping to explain far better than someone dubbing over it can, which lets me find my own words to describe it. Thank you so much for your efforts.

I land a LOT of front kick and sidekick in light sparr (mma rules), especially if the did not know my background in TMA(tradisional MA) because they are simply not expecting it.. Muaythai push kick is very different with a good mai geri.. Mine had much faster speed, tighter distance and sharper impact than their push kick..

I can see Lyoto moving,slipping throwing feints/countering,trips,pushing off when tied up in the clinch via Sumo against Weidman. His Shotokan Karate footwork angles entrees exits are some of the best ever in MMA. The most unique in my opinion. He has life long Shotokan Karate experience under his father. Weidman is a beast forsure not taking anything away, But,Lyoto is a totally different fight than Anderson. Hes been fighting bigger 205er's for most of his career. His skill's against wrestler based fighter's are proven in the octagon. Chris isnt gonna surprise him with wrestling. Lyoto's striking is even more unique than Anderson's. That shotokan footwork is so hard to catch up to. Its like now you see me now you don't,cann't touch this. Cann't wait for this fight.

I love this style of fighting, it's so unorthodox and in combination with south paw it really makes it hard for the opponent to adjust to your style even if they have been training for it. Southpaw is great for stopping takedowns especially when the guy you are versing is a much bigger person than you.

Machida is my favorite fighter but he has one flaw in his game .... As Lyoto dived in to counter the kick with his rear hand, his lead hand was low - and John Jones, being in the same stance, was able to connect a rear, left hook through the gap. (which set up Jones winning Choke as the Punch stunned Lyoto Machida). This is (was ) the one flaw in Machida's game that Jones the 1st to truely exploit. (from a Judo Chop Article) ...In a Kata such as Jion with three rapid fire punches (actually 1 punch pause 2 Punches) I pull the non punching hand to the Jaw, one can Grab and still pull the Opponent in if the opportunity arises and/or if the situations demands.

There was a good fight years ago between Yushin Okami vs Chael Sonnen. In my opinion Sonnen used a style quite different comparing to his typical fighting strategy. Would you please check that fight style and make a video explaining about it? Sonnen was kicking and punching too many times using his lead hand and foot. I guess that many Jeet kune do fans would enjoy.
