Thank you Sharon. A big yes make sure your new strings are straight and evenly spaced on your bridge before you tighten and tune. I put my my phone tuning app on the table and place my lyre over it, works great. One you have tuned the first time pulling up the slack each time after is literally a hair turn. Sorry I couldn’t see the tuner in the video but I got the idea. Some times I get frustrated getting exactly on the hair turn so I am comfortable just to be in the green zone. Having lots of fun plucking out melodies for now. Getting there v

Thanks Connie! Yes agree just being in the green zone is good enough for me too. There won't be much time to play if we are aiming for pitch perfection on wooden instruments, we would just be tuning all the time especially on new instruments. For me as long as the do-re-mi.... sounds nicely lines up when I go pluck the strings, I'm happy 💕

Hello, some of the strings in my Lyre can't hold the note, the little metal where you use the tunning key just roll back ¿What can I do?

You can try restringing the affected strings adding a little wood glue and sawdust to secure the pin better. If you can wait a day or two, I will film a quick demo. I have the same issue with a new lyre that I got

I saw in a learning video the teacher tuning while the string was ringing (he plucks and tunes immediatly). I found it weird and was wondering if it may damage the strings or make the tuning harder than necessary ?

No this is a normal way to tune as well and won’t damage the strings, just make sure that you are only doing tiny, tiny turns, especially when you are close to pitch ❤

Hello, I bought a lyre recently and this video was a huge help! Quick question, how tight should the strings be? My lyre is a 19 string one and I’m finding that the A5 B5 C6 strings seemed really tight, even to the point of snapping
@learningthelyreharp
@learningthelyreharp Жыл бұрын
Are you using a tuner that shows octave? For example on mine it shows G3 for low G, C4 for middle, C5 for treble C. It should be tight but not to the point of snapping.

@@learningthelyreharp Yeah I do. I can get the B5 string to about F5 before I start to worry that it’s too tight

@@enyagamer739 If you press down on the rest of your strings it should feel relatively the same as those ones. If not then the string gauge may not be correct and that’s why it feels very tight.

Hi sharon! I got my lyre not long ago but when i try to tune on an app, it shows a completely different note to what I'm playing. Am i doing something wrong? Please helpp

Make sure you are using a chromatic tuner or that the setting is on chromatic. There are different tuning modes such as one’s specific to violin, guitars or bass instrument. Lyres need a tuner in chromatic mode. I use Tuner Pitched and many others uses panotuner

Hi! I just got my lyre the other day and I have tried tuning it but I'm not entirely sure how I should approach it. Should I try to reach the assigned pitch of a string on the first time tuning it or should I gradually increase the pitch to get to the assigned pitch? For instance, should I first tune an A4 string to an E4 and gradually work my way up to A4? Because if I try to reach the assigned pitch of the lyre, I find that it starts to loosen and I would tighten it more, making the string too tight for me to pluck or pick it; It also starts to cut through the bridge, while the pins are being pulled into the body of the lyre. Thank you so much!

What kind of lyre did you get? I brought all of my lyres to the assigned pitch very slowly on the first tuning. Then had to retune and tighten daily until it settled. This created a notch on the bridge that helps to keep the stings in place but it didn't cut through. The bridge is made of softer wood than the lyre body. Without seeing what it is doing to your lyre it is hard to know if what is happening is normal or a defect. If you are on Facebook, check out the Facebook group and post to ask the question there and share photos. The members and I will be able to help you there more. 🤗

@@learningthelyreharp I'm not entirely sure what brand it was since it was my friend who sent it to me, but it was a 10-stringed lyre. I don't have a Facebook account but I'll try to make one later! I have another question though, after I tuned it the first time, do I loosen the string the next day and start tightening it from there or do I immediately start tightening it? Because I don't know how the strings work and how they stretch, so I am assuming that the next day, the strings would still have the same tightness but are out of tune, therefore I would probably tune it down to loosen it before tightening it, in fear of the strings being too tight. Is that how one should do it? I'm so confused lol.
@learningthelyreharp
@learningthelyreharp Жыл бұрын
No you don't need to loosen it after tuning especially if it's new. If it 's brand new the strings are still stretching, the ball end moving up the hole and the wood relaxing in the new environment. These all contribute to the strings loosening and going out of pitch naturally. Overtime, it should stay in relative tune and not to go too far off the assigned pitch. Just like all other string instruments, the environment affects the wood and we will always need to do a bit of fine tuning before playing/practicing sessions especially if we don't play our instruments often.
