Stone Sour was actually Corey Taylor's band before he joined Slipknot. They played from 1992-1997. Went on hiatus. Came back in 2000. They have been taking a break on/off while Corey and Jim Root toured with Slipknot. Root left in 2014. Stone Sour went on indefinite hiatus in 2020. Slipknot was formed in 1995 Check out Gone Sovereign/Absolute Zero with Jim Root. Must be played back to back like on the album. Corey sings on Absolute Zero: If I offended you, you needed it. Great lyrics

In the music video, right when he says "an epidemic of the mannequins, contaminanting everything" he shows the Hollywood sign. This song hits so different after the awakening I had last year. And looking at you through the glass (the tv screen) that we are all lost in, and the "stars that lie to you" are all the Hollywood celebrities that we idolize and worship, and they are some of the most evil and deceptive people.

Corey Taylor said in an interview when asked about this song: " It's me basically calling 'bulls--t' on pretty much everyone involved with the 'American Idol'-type shows. It has its place, but when you're basically cornering the market and making it very hard for anyone who actually writes their own music to get ahead, then it's wrong and that's really why I wrote this song."

I remember around 2002, Corey announced that he was reuniting his band Stone Sour, which was before Slipknot... Slipknot was taking a break, so he got Slipknot guitarist Jim Root w/ Josh Rand (guitar), Shawn Economaki (bass) and Joel Elkman (drums)... and did the first Stone Sour album in 2002... Elkman was replaced in 2006 by Roy Mayorga (drums) for this 2nd album 'Come What (ever) May'... Shawn Economaki quit in 2011 after the next album 'Audio secrecy'... Jim Root left in 2013 (?) and was replaced by Christian Martucci (guitar), and Johnny Chow (bass) had joined. Stone Sour went on hiatus in recent years.

When you look into glass you see your own reflection but you can also look through your reflection. So he looking out a window but also looking at himself and thinking he has lost track of time deep in thought Your mind has infinity thoughts like the universe is infinite and goes on forever like your thoughts can sometimes your ideas and thoughts are brilliant and you get excited and that is the star that shines for you but then our own doubts sabotage us and lie to us. He is pondering something that he feels is going to effect his eternity The song starts he is asking himself how he feels about his choice and his soul and is loosing hope, sounds like in humanity as he describes people as mannequins which are shells thoughtless empty soulless people ruining everything because of greed perhaps Maybe he realizes you can move and meet different people but it’s no different it’s still the same just a different scene although he was hoping for a happier reality. It is a deeper song than I realized since it is a bit repetitive but the beginning lyrics are full of depth

Always thought it was about him looking at a girl across the room through a drink glass, like at a bar or something. Like sneaking a look as to not be seen by doing it while he's taking a sip and he feels like his heart/time stopped as he's seeing her, like there's a spark and his heart slipped a beat. But I also think it means what you guys are saying as well, like there's something amazing about that girl but he also knows that there's probably a lie there too.

I always thought of looking through the glass of a drink. Being drunk, time can pass infinitely different and it feels like being alone in your head. This song always gave me the impression of someone being committed to an asylum, or maybe being checked into rehab. I felt like the imagery was describing this guy sitting alone, struck in his head with nothing but his own thoughts for company, knowing on the other side of that one-way window somebody was watching him, taking notes, filling out paperwork; the line "When something like a soul becomes initialized and folded up like paper dolls and little notes" in particular gave me the impression of someone "close" to him - a partner or family member - putting their initials on the paperwork that pawns him off onto the doctors like he's not even a real person, just some malfunctioning trinket they don't want to deal with any more. And there's also this theme of cynicism to me. "How do you feel? That is the question. But I forget you don't expect an easy answer." To me it has this kinda sarcastic, world-weary feel to it, like the doctor is doing their usual psych-eval interview, asking him how he feels, and he wants to just brush it off with "fine, how are you" or something, but he's looking at this doctor and thinking in the back of his mind "you're not actually interested in how I'm feeling, you're just baiting me hoping for something you can analyze so you can make a study out of my life." It's all a mix of sorrow, anger, and just being "done" with everything. Like "you don't even see me as a human being anymore. I'm just something for you to poke at and study. You don't care about me." I've looked it up, and as with many songs there doesn't seem to be a reliable source on the meaning behind it. Some suggest it's about addiction, some suggest it's a about a relationship, someone claimed Taylor had said it was a call-out song aimed at the music industry, how fake it all was, and expressing frustration that the "singer-songwriter revolution" had failed or perhaps never even took place. Which does fit well with I believe it was the second verse, "how much is real? So much to question. An epidemic of the mannequins contaminating everything we thought came from the heart but never did, right from the start. Just listen too the noises, null n' void instead of voices." It's like he's looking around at other "artists" and thinking "you're all so completely and utterly fake. Not a single one of you wrote your own songs, there's no real emotion behind any of this, it's all just counterfeit and carbon copies." And there's a lot of truth in that. There are tons of "hit songs" we associate with specific artists yet not only did they NOT write the song, many times the song was written for another artist who turned it down or the label decided they wanted someone else to do it instead. And that artist just sorta shoe-horns themselves into the headspace of the song and tries to pass it off as something they're really feeling. It's why there are so many songs out there that really don't have any "zing" to them, and others that hit so much harder because it's REAL. Like NF's "How Could You Leave Us." That song cuts you right to the core. I can't listen to it without tearing up no matter how many times I've heard it and even though I've never been in that situation or anywhere close to it, I feel it every time. And then I'll hear a song performed by some other artist and it's just so hollow because they're just reading the words with no emotional investment.

Funny Stone Sour Story for you all. When my son was young my wife asked that I don't play songs with bad language on the car stereo. One time I was listening to 'Dying' by Stone Sour and my Son said 'I'm telling mommy that you are playing songs with swearing'. I couldn't hear the bad language so had to bribe him to tell me where it was. The lyrics for the offending part are 'If I can't live without you but I can't breathe when I'm with you' - but my son hears 'I f*****g live without but I can't breathe when I'm with you!' - Now, even all these years later, all I can hear is my sons version of the lyrics everytime I hear the song!
