This band is sometimes called a national treasure of Finland. They are extremely versatile with their style, and arguably one of the best male vocalist ever.

Amorphis is one of my all time favorites. Finnish melodicdeathfolkprogmetal. Their lyrics are heavily influenced by Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. Since 2007 the lyrics have been written by Pekka Kainulainen, a Finnish artist (not a member of the band) who writes in Finnish and then they are translated to English. Tuonela is the land of the dead, underworld, sort of like Hades is in Greek mythology. River of Tuoni divides the worlds. I highly recommend The Bee for the next song from them.

@@JTMMTV What comes to the song The Bee i can give you a little background so you can understand the story Like most of their songs are from the book of Kalevala, and other folklore connected to it. Kalevala is basicly a collection of oral wisdom, poetry, incantations and mythology. The Bee is about the demigod Lemminkäinen dying and being sent to the river Tuonela (the underworld) & his mother going to fetch him back. His mother sews his body back in one piece and the sky god Ukko sends a bee from the heavens to blow life back into him. I'd also recommend some live performances to see the band in action at stage. To what you said about "hitting different", Tolkien said about Kalevala, that it's stories are literature so very unlike any of the things that are familiar to general readers, they are so un-European and yet could only come from Europe. Here's a good video for that "The Bee" background, if you haven't already checked it out: "Stories of Finnish Art - Akseli Gallen-Kallela: Lemminkäinen's Mother, 1897". Tolkien also liked Sibelius' Kalevala themed work: "Sibelius : The Swan of Tuonela - Karajan*". Couple of traditional Finnish songs from Kanteletar to get into the mystical ancient mood: "Loituma - missing him" and "My Kantele (Eriskummainen kantele) - Loituma". Amorphis' version of "My Kantele": "Amorphis - My Kantele (Acoustic Reprise)". Here's a haunting tune, which could be an intro to that "On The Dark Waters" song: "Trad / Arr Salminen: Konevitsan kirkonkellot". Especially Sentenced's version of that song could be: "Sentenced - Konevitsan kirkonkellot". Here's Piirpauke's version: "Piirpauke - Konevitsan kirkonkellot". Since Amorphis is considered to have created the basis for the Finnish Folk Metal, here's a song from their album "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" (1994): "Amorphis - Black Winter Day".

Yes, you did it! Finally some love for Amorphis ❤️ Tomi has amazing voice, he is only growler I can listen 😅 They have so many good songs. If you want to hear a song with only clean vocals go with You I Need, House Of Sleep Or Smoke... Also would recommend Amongst Stars with Anneke van Giersbergen. Also with Amorphis go with official videos, they don't have many great live recordings in KZbin.

One of my favourite bands. Not a bad album in their discography. Lyrics can seem strange and difficult to understand on 1st listen a lot of the time as their songs are all based on the Kalevala, which is an epic Finnish folk tale about the creation of the earth and magic and gods and the afterlife etc etc. A number of their albums are concept albums about a particular character from those tales. I would recommend songs like House Of Sleep, The Bee, Silver Bride, Amongst Stars, Heart Of. Giant, Towards and Against. They haven't done a bad album so you can't go wrong really.

Nice reaction! Alot of their lyrics draw inspiration from Kalevala (the Finnish national epic) and their latest albums have been focusing on certain characters and story lines. I just read a book written about the band and i believe it said the last 3 or 4 albums lyrics have been written first in finnish by artist Pekka Kainulainen, and then translated to english. I think that sounds like an interesting and time consuming process!

In the finnish mythology. In the underworld (Tuonela) everything is backwards when compared to the human world. Left is right, up is down and so forth. There the world river turns around and becomes 'Tuonen joki', the river of the land of the dead. In this form the river flows from north to south and upwards again towards the upper world. In the heavens it returns to the spring at the roots of the birch tree. From there it flows down through the skies once more as a world river. This is the eternal cycle of life.

Nice one,i love it You should check out some of In Flames older albums like The Jesters race,Whoracle,Colony,Clayman, they are from Sweeden and are pioneers of Melodic death metal,might like it,their songs have some amazing lyrics aswell,tho their thematics is alot different from Amorphis.

To fully understand their lyrics you have to go trough the the Finnish national epic Kalevala and that can take some months maybe years 😂! This is good song but some of their best songs are so epic that my expectations are maybe unfairly high when ever it comes to this band. This kalevala theme can be fascinating and appealing if you are into dark and unique stories. It has been said that the Kalevala was the reason why J. R. R. Tolkien originally created 'the Lord of the Rings' stories. Also these eastern sitar-like sounds brings some magic to this music.

You should look into Kalevala book english edition. Full lord of the rings stuff of ancient times Finland. And J.R.R Tolkien draw inspiration to lord of the rings from the Finnish epic Kalevala.

In Finnish language the stress in always on the first syllable, so try saying 'TUOnela' that way, not 'tuone-ela'. Otherwise thanks for your reactions!
