🇫🇮❤you for sharing this reaction to a great Finnish band. P.S. The high pitched female vocals were performed by Noa Gruman, also conducted the Hellscore choir for the entire "Queen of Time" album. Noa is the lead vocalist & co-composer for the Israeli symphonic/progressive metal band SCARDUST. She has a vocal range of 4,5 octaves & has worked as 1st soprano for the Israeli opera & also with Zubin Mehta. In addition, she's also a classically trained cellist & pianist.

I've been following this band since their debut album, and while a lot has changed stylistically, and band has explored many musical avenues, it's always been "Amorphis" through and through. I've seen them twice, once in Japan and again in Germany. Both times were incredible. But I would love to see them at a dedicated Amorphis show one day. Anneke is also a force to be reckoned with whether its metal, prog rock or pop. I first came across her when she was singing for The Gathering, namely the song Nighttime Birds and that album. I've been a devotee ever since. Her project, The Gentle Storm is a highlight of her more recent output (IMHO). The album released in both metal and accoustic versions.

Love me some Amorphis. This is an interesting track cause at times it almost feels like melodic death metal combined with EDM. They're usually more folky and less EDM sounding but thats just the flavouring they decided to top this melodic death metal cake with for this track. Tomi is one of the growlers in the game, imo. Absolutely phenomenal deep gutturals. Anneke is a legend too. You might recognise her from her collabs with Devin, but she has collaborated on so, so many projects that you'll know doubt explore.

You need to check out Matt Barlow from Iced Earth at some point (maybe their Dante's Inferno track) and also anything with Russel Allen in it. Symphony X or whatever. :P Fun reaction as always my dude.

Amorphis is one of the bedrocks of Finnish metal and they are exactly as impressive live. You are always in for a treat, they don't do half-assed performances. They also have their signature sound, you can put pretty much any Amorphis track from their 30+ year career playing and it will be recognizable as Amorphis. Yet the music keeps adding new elements to keep it fresh. Having done extreme metal since 1992 they have also inspired a ton of younger Finnish metal bands.

Love Amorphis. Tomi has some of the best growls around, and his melodic voice is golden. Anneke is criminally under-represented in the reactor community. She was the main inspiration for Floor to sing in a metal band. And as much as I love Floor, Anneke will always be the top for me. You can check out another Amorphis song with the two of them in "Amongst Stars." Anneke features more prominently in that one.

@@SoulSingerDiscovers This is taken from a livestreamed concert during lockdown. The studio version intro is only about half as long, but they've used The Bee as their live opener since 2018, and prolong the intro live to build up suspence and get on stage. Seen them live 4 times, and can definitely recommend the experience. First time was in 2013, with possibly one of the strongest concert lineups I've seen with Nightwish headlining and Arch Enemy and Amorphis supporting :D

There are definitely a lot of electronic elements added to the throat singing. At first I thought it might've been generated by some electronic source but it is actually acknowledged as Albert Kuvezin and Andre Alvinzi. Interestingly for Albert they list him as overtone voice and engineer. Which leads me to believe that the synth is interwoven into the overtone to change it from a sound that a human voice could do. While you could blend kargyraa and sygyt to achieve some electronic and didgeridoo sounds, there are just elements of that sound in this song that aren't replicable by the human voice. Still it's interesting how more groups are using throat singing.

He's not doing the throat singing. It is attributed to two other people :) I also think there are electronic elements to the singing because even with the bounce between kargyraa and sygyt (the didgeridoo noises) you still couldn't replicate some of those particularly electronic elements.

And oh, while there certainly is mixing and mastering done, the material was all from a single live performance. Like it says, "live at Tavastia 2021". Tavastia is a venue, so I doubt they had several concerts there in the same year... And not just any venue, but the most esteemed rock club in Finland. Not a big place, but playing there means your band has become big in Finland. So yes, Tomi can pull it off live, and he just did. (As for pronounciation, remember the M is short. Tommi, where M is long, is a different first name.)

The band has taken stories from Kalevala, but not in few albums. Tales from the Thousand Lakes and Tuonela had Kalevala inspiration in them, as have had the Eclipse, Silent Waters, Skyforger and The Beginning of Times, but the 4 latest albums, including this one, with Pekka Kainulainen's lyrics have been from Pekka's own stories and poems.

May be repeating an earlier comment , but, as with Most Amorphis songs, the lyrics are based on the Finnish epic poem the Kalevala. As part of the queen of time album , the hero is given new life after being slashed to pieces by Tuonela's river by the bees nectar.

Yeah, that's not true. Pekka Kainulainen, the one who wrote the lyrics has said in a KZbin comment: "Hi, this text is not a Finnish folk tale. Who know's if there were this kind of a tale somewhere...but it just came to my mind during the writing session when making the lyric for the album. Inspiration or dreaming. The Silent Water, the Skyforger and The Beginning of Times...the lyrics for these albums are more or less connected with the tales of Kalevala but the rest of my Amorphis texts are from my mind and pen. To concentrate on writing may get you into surprising mood."
