Man, I LOVE the songs, where they ask ethical and open historical questions... how easy opinions are formed, but to hard it may be, to give a REAL answer... Songs like this are the reason, why I absolutely love Sabaton. They don't just pick easy, glorious topics, but also controversial, difficult ones... plus, the rythm is badass here, too. Thanks for another great reaction!

100% agree, these are not just easy songs about easy war topics. These are ones that make you think. This is another reason I love reacting to their stuff because they make me think and being an analytical nerd, I love it lol.

You say this song has a very different sound or tone from Sabaton's other work, which I think is a consequence of the subject matter. This and a couple other songs (Inmate 4859 and The Final Solution, for example) are, like all Sabaton's work, about important historical events that should be remembered, but are separate in that there isn't much to celebrate or be proud of. The German army in WW2 did many terrible things and their commanders are by and large rightly remembered as villains, but the majority of those who did the fighting and dying were, as Sabaton reminds us, "young men who lost their way," or who were dragged along by their unstoppable, merciless government, and this song is more somber and funereal in tone to lament their sacrifices without seeming to advocate the cause for which they served.

It's about the true effectiveness of the Wehrmarcht in German war machine in WWII. At the same time, asking the question: Was the Wehrmarcht soldiers a real part of the things happening during the war, believing the dogmas of Nazi Germany or were they victims of the propaganda and/or the fear of consequences for speaking against it all. We also must remember that Germany was a totalitarian society where the propaganda machine had spewed out this things for years. Of course there were really evils amongst the soldiers, bit I frankly think that many of them found themselves fighting a war they really didn't believe in. We are seeing this happening even today in Europe.

nice reaction, friend! I really like this one, it is different and makes you think love the part that says "Were they the victims of the time, or proud parts of larger goals?" they show 2 different views of the same people

Yeah, the statement (isn’t in the song, I believe, but still a strong sentence) “slaves to an unknown agenda.” I took it as they didn’t really know about the holocaust, due to propaganda, which is likely part of the reason that some of the base Wehrmacht joined the USA in the battle of castle Itter.

I really like the song and REALLY appreciate that Sabaton has been brave enough to do these kinds of topics. I'm sure we've all seen some ww2 movies or newsreels from the time, that have those huge rallies in Germany in the 30's-, where tens of thousands of people move in sync " as part of a machine". There's parts here that remind me a lot of the sound of those thousands of boots and people shouting in sync the same ideological things. btw. Whenever I hear this one, I can't help but "see" this performance with the live orchestra kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaKmcnuDmd6mo7M ...Joakim is allways so delightfully dramatic and his movements are so insync with the music, that I feel like he is "conducting" the music and the audience, and when they have a lot of pyros/ effects timed to music, it's like he's "conjuring" fire.

This song is a different from all you are watching from them, but Joakim voice is awesome, and the topic of this song is really hard, they get me in the part "Crazy madmen on a leash Or young men who lost their way?" You have Rise of Evil (another hard one to hear) and Resist and Bite in the list¡?

One thing I want to note when a newcomer engages in a conversation like this is that a lot Wehraboo, people who fantasize about the Wehrmacht, likes to create this grand images of the the German army in WW2 and sometimes, spreading myths surrounded it. The" clean Wehrmacht" myth or "Rommel" myth are typical among them and may lead to historical revisionism. This isn't to say that there aren't good people in the Wehrmacht but you should consider this subjects and many other things in history, a much more nuance view on it because it's a complex subject that in no way a song or a single video would truly explain it fully. I'd totally encourage you and other to do more research on this to have a bigger picture.

I cannot suggest reading this comment enough this person knows what he/she is talking about. We must beware of the coming Wehraboo’s they will come and they are so biased and cherry pick the fact they want to bring up to a crazy level. Also good that you mention it because it is not as simple as the people in it didnt want to do it there was good people in there but even they sometimes commited horrible acts basically we can think of the Wehrmacht as this very grey (ish) zone which obeys an evil regime imo and commited horrible acts. But compared with the SS at least it had some honor or maybe thats the wrong word more like honorable people in it a few a minority but the orginisation is at least way less evil then the fucking Waffen SS. But that's probably because their main job was to win the war not execute people as a priority if it was then we most likely would have a very diffrent view of it today.

I am watching the history on this one in the morning and reacting to it. I really appreciate the comment on this one. I am by no means an expert in history and this Sabaton experience has been fascinating to me from both a learning perspective as well as the musical side of it. I like to be kept honest as well, not being an expert I truly try and stay humble with my view (harder sometimes) lol. Check out my history reaction tomorrow and please chime in if I miss anything. It is people like yourself, Mia, Melkor, and others that really help me get the full picture of history with it. Welcome!

Did they do their duty to survive? yes....I talked to friends from france, the UK and the US, none of the veterans ever talked about what had happened. They had no answer.
