The worst thing against Antoine is that he is progressively getting worse! He was fine in the first season and actually got out a few chuckles out of me. He had some level of competence and his rivalry with Sonic was actually set on somewhat equal footing (like in the episode set in underground city) And then in season two he literally trips over his own legs like 5 different times, is scared of his own shadow and his bumbling incompetence is barely even noticed by his companions. Also he is forced into like every episode or even gets two episodes (with 2 stories each) that focus solely on showing how much of an idiot he is (even in episodes where it's not really his fault like the one you mentioned. It would be nice if Sonic would be the one in the wrong for once and would had to apologize to Antoine) I just don't get how a character can get flanderized as much in the span of only 26 episodes XD Antoine from SatAM is one of a few Sonic characters that I really hate but luckily he is LOT better in the Archie Comics :)

What Could Have Been: The show's third season was completely laid out and prepared, and then ABC cancelled it: -The Freedom Fighters (now called "Freedom Builders") would have begun the process of rebuilding Mobotropolis, Rotor spearheading the transformation, and Sonic finding that Victory Is Boring. Unbeknown to them, Snively would be sneaking about Robotropolis, gathering intel on the Freedom Fighters and plotting to attack them outright. For a time, Snively is able to place himself in a position of power, proving himself as formidable a foe as Robotnik, if not more so. However, his time as head villain would prove short lived thanks to the efforts of the Freedom Fighters, and in a moment of desperation would free Naugus, Robotnik, and King Acorn from the void. Naugus immediately takes on the title of main villain, using the King as bait to lure Sally in, and making Snively nothing. Robotnik's nephew was slated to defect to the Freedom Fighters in retaliation, although he would secretly plan to betray them at some point, Antoine being the only one to notice - and ultimately stop - Snively's plans. -The show apparently would have eventually confirmed, as some fans had already speculated, that Mobius was Earth All Along, with the story set millennia after a world-purging nuclear war that wiped out humans and caused animals to become sapient. Robotnik and Snively were to be the last humans alive and had been off-planet on a space colonization mission when the war struck. After betraying and killing the rest of their crew, they returned to Earth and, due to relativity, landed after the animals had already assumed control of the planet. -Tails would have matured and played a much larger role as an official member of the Freedom Fighters, even showing a bit of a rebellious side and would save Knothole Village from a major disaster. Furthermore, his relationship with Sonic would have been closer to the games. Dulcy would have come into her full powers. All Ben Hurst said about that was, “You don’t want to see a dragon when she gets mad.” -Sally would be romanced by someone other than Sonic, though in the end Sonic would eventually come out on top. Sonic would also undergo a major personality change. -Nicole's backstory would be told, revealing that she was once a Mobian child that was brainwashed into a computer program by Robotnik. At some point NICOLE would be restored to her former self, becoming a part of the Freedom Fighters. -At some point, Knothole would "get crunched". -Knuckles was supposed to appear at the end of the season and was going to be more of a main character for an also never made fourth season.

Executive Meddling: -Sega Enterprises was known to make frustrating and seemingly-arbitrary demands. For example, like many American cartoons, the characters were all originally designed with four fingers instead of five. The designs were approved by Sega of America, but were rejected by Sega Enterprises, who were reportedly afraid that it would be associated with the Yakuza's tendency to chop off victims' fingers. This resulted in DiC having to reanimate a number of already-completed scenes to include additional fingers. -Almost all of the writing staff who worked on Season 1 were removed sometime before development of Season 2 began, leaving Ben Hurst as essentially the sole writer for the series going forward. -The remaining staff were pushed to create Dulcy to balance out the gender ratio of the Freedom Fighters. -The four Antoine shorts were also a request of executives (ABC), as a part of their demand to lighten up the series by adding more comedy.

Voices in One Room: A variation was used: Most of the cast, who were largely composed of veteran voice actors, performed in the same room, with the sole exception of Jaleel White (Due to high school and Family Matters). While this made it hard to play off of the rest of the cast, he also had more takes to work with. *This was especially true* for Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Underground, because those two shows did their recording in Canada 🇨🇦 while White was in Los Angeles.

4:27 in my head Canon the reason for Antione's rude arrogant Vain and passive-aggressive persona is meant to stem from the fact that he what was before the takeover from an aristocratic family as well as his quote on quote crush on Sally and his hate for Sonic is also meant to stem from the fact that Antoine was originally arranged to marry her and he essentially see Sonic as someone that I would ruin everything Antoine have been told by his parents would happen plus it's also indicated that Antoine's parents likely mollycoddled him way too much as he tries to look like a typical hero type but at his Heart he is a coward

The Archie comics eventually establish that Antoine’s blowhard nature is a deliberate coping mechanism on his part to deal with his crippling cowardice, and his issues with Sonic stem from his need to live up to his family’s history as noble knights. Also, in the comics he eventually develops as a character to the point where he stops pursuing Sally after realizing it just wasn’t going to happen, begins an actual relationship with Bunnie Rabbot, and even marries her (despite neither of them being old enough to buy alcohol) in a full ceremony with Rotor the Walrus officiating and Sonic and Sally as Best Man & Maid of Honor, respectively. Meanwhile, Sonic’s relationship with Sally spontaneously combusted and left him in Relationship Limbo, while Sally went on to be ship-teased with (1) a jackass skunk half-a-decade older than her, (2) the most creatively-uninspired Monkey King clone in existence, and (3) NICOLE, the A.I. assistant on her smartphone. You might be thinking that I’m joking with that last one. You’d be _partially_ correct. See, after a while NICOLE developed free-will, a personality, the ability to experience emotions, and body identity. Eventually she developed a means to holographically project herself into the real world so she could actually be with the people she had learned to care about. The story that introduced ‘Nicole the Holo-Lynx’ is generally considered to be incredibly touching and did a great job changing the status-quo in a way that wouldn’t upset readers. It is also the Ignition Point for the ‘Sallicole’ ship. Word of warning though, the art for the comics varied _drastically_ depending on who was doing it that day, so if you go looking for stuff and keep thinking “why can I only find fan-done redraws, where’s the original?” the answer is the ‘fan-done redraws’ _are_ the originals, no really I’m serious, art direction at Archie actually was _that_ shit.

That’s correct… Except for one thing. Unlike Sonic, Antoine and Snively turned out to be cowards (not to mention Sonic, Antoine and Sally would even be in a love triangle (or square if counting Griff, something that took centre stage in the Archie Sonic comics of the early-mid 2000s before Ian Flynn) in episode 10 of Sonic SatAM). But outside of that, this indeed feels more like a 2000s Sonic story (re: the Sonic Adventure duology, Sonic Advance 3 (the only one with the most story and even voice acting, albeit non-extensive), Sonic ‘06 (controversial game, but filled to the brim with both bad and good qualities), Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic Unleashed and Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games for the DS) than a 2010s one (re: Sonic Free Riders, Sonic Colours (for home consoles), Sonic Generations (which I kinda sorta like, but definitely don’t love as much as the majority (though I can see why it’s exalted) because it’s a 2010s Sonic game), Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom games (mainly Rise of Lyric) and especially Sonic Forces (and I thought SLW was the worst!).)! Not to mention the fact that the common complaint that Sonic in the Archie Comics never learned to be a decent human (or in this case, hedgehog) being even after issue 179 and Antoine did (people just like to make Sally and Tails and the rest of Sonic’s friends look justified in their actions (which in this case is fighting Sonic instead of fighting alongside him just because he’s making his own decisions even if it meant saving the world instead of having a girlfriend) while portraying Antoine as a guy who would go from a snivelling snob to a brave knight, which we had to wait until Flynn would take over to finally take the characters a lot more seriously), smh.

The ending broke my heart to see Sonic unable to save his uncle at the end and seeing him cry) Sonic Conversation (Where they finally managed to turn Bunnie and Chuck back to normal for a short period of time until the effects wore off, turning them back into robots and Sonic managed to restore his mind with his power rings. But he had to leave his uncle behind again) SpyHog (the ending where Chuck still refused to come back to knothole and demanded to stay in his hideout until Robotnik is defeated. Seeing him shed a tear at the end of the episode made me burst into tears because they had to leave him behind not once, not twice, but three times. I feel bad for Sonic) It's a shame the show ended on a cliffhanger but there's a group called Team Sea3on who's making a fan funded 3rd season of the show. @PlanetZoidstar2 жыл бұрын
I would have preferred Bunnie x Sonic over Sally x Sonic. Sonic and Sally just clash too much, she's too reserved and tied down and he's too reckless and free spirited. Antoine would be a better fit for Sally since he greatly admires her and would want to be by her side when she's Queen. Sonic would get bored very quickly being tied down to serving Sally. Bunnie's alot more of a free spirit who isn't tied down to a throne.

I have 2 episodes that are my favorite in this show: The 2 parter time travel episode (mainly because it was Sonic Generations of the 90's), and Doomsday Project, because it felt like a great ending. I'd say just take out the cliffhanger and the episode would be a perfect conclusion to the series.
@SorcererLance2 жыл бұрын
Myself being around 6 years old when I first watched the show on TV, this is a respectable and fair review from the perspective of someone who missed out due to being born later and the show stopped rerunning. It's hard to deny the 90's fads that were popular around the time to be appealing to kids back then, the whole aggressive, rebellious "in-your-face" against grownups thing was practically everywhere (old Nintendo ads like the "Play It Loud" era being an example). The catchphrases drilled into our heads due to how frequently they were uttered by Sonic, along with the obsession with Chili Dogs that surprisingly and eventually became canon in the games... It does get grating, I'll admit. Plus yeah, Antoine being the comic relief was sorta overdone, some character growth of him learning to be brave would've been an interesting story arc had they taken that chance. The cliffhanger for a season 3 was something that haunted many fans of the show from my generation for decades wanting to know what would happen next... closest thing to closure we got was fans chatting with one of the lead writers, Ben Hurst, on what he originally had planned had the story continued, in which many of those fans took it upon themselves to make their own interpretation of a continuation based upon the notes Hurst shared to fans before he sadly passed away. The closest thing we had to a continuation was the Archie comics, which was a spiritual continuation as it followed similar things from the show, but plenty of differences with its own continuity... and having read the comics since the very beginning, I also don't blame you for skipping out. The writing got confusing due to a Star Trek fan who worked on the Star Trek The Next Generation comics shoehorning in his obsession with sci-fi and political drama into the Sonic comics, having never played a single game until eventually getting replaced by someone far better who actually grew up with Sonic and the games. Also yes, I've been saying this for years... Forces was basically an extremely poor attempt to replicate SatAM, there was potential had they put more work into it and not rushed it out.

My friends and I loved this show when it was first run, and my best friend and I got heavy into the comics soon after it was pulled from airing. Lots of time spent going to each other's houses, burning through a stack of comics, then playing S2 or S3&K. Favorite episodes have got to be the Uncle Chuck episodes, the one with the buzzsaw walker trying to wipe out the Great Forest, and the one where they stumble into a literally underground Freedom Fighter city they never knew about. Some episodes were way heavier than kids understood, like when Sally was searing for evidence of her father after learning he was taken prisoner and not done away with right away, but the tone of the second season shifted to be a bit softer in look and gravity until the two part finale. Would've loved a third season to tie it all together.

I suppose I'll decide as I continue with my Everything Wrong With series on this show alongside Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, which I also like. I understand why some people would favor SATam over AoSTH, but AoSTH has a pretty good charm with its characters. I used to make all sorts of videos featuring characters from both series as well as some fanfiction, which I am actually looking back on as I am writing this and am thinking "Could this have ever worked?" I suppose that is just how it goes when you look over some fan work you made over 10 years ago and realize how things work in the world. Perhaps as I get older, I'll figure out just how good of a series I could make as I had been wanting to for probably the entire time I've been using the internet.

Screwed by the Network: Despite pulling in solid ratings against Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and being connected with a mega-hit game series, Sonic the Hedgehog got cancelled for *two reasons:* Disney had just bought ABC and decided to clean house concerning their Saturday lineup (which would lead to One Saturday Morning emerging a couple years later), and many of ABC's stations tended to delay the lineup or preempt it entirely to air local news or sports. As a result, some people didn't see the show until USA Network put it on as part of their Action Extreme Team block.

Honestly, while I've never watched many of these 90's video games cartoon shows (like, the only one I remember were some episodes of super Mario world, haven't watched super Mario Bros 3, super Mario Bros super show, Zelda TV series AOSTH or Sonic Satam.) But I find it fascinating that since the source material was so vague, instead of adapting stuff, they truly created their own thing, like the Mario Bros super show created stuff like that location where pasta grows on threes or something like that's and Satam tried giving an explanation to the rings or putting a unique spin on the fact that eggman roboticices animals and stuff, like, I bet that that new sonic show that's coming out next year won't have stuff like that, because it would be inaccurate to the source material. And while that is true, that's exactly what makes these 90s video game cartoons so interesting to me.

What really sucks is that great animated shows like this and Gargoyles were canned because they lost in the ratings to the _power rangers..._ that show that took half its footage from an old 70s show from Japan, filled up the other half with cheesy children's educational programming, and marketed it all to hell to get it to sell products. That show was rank with _cheap._ Meanwhile, SatAM and Gargoyles both had effort, story, atmosphere, character, and it won them still-loyal fanbases. All that effort they put into those shows and they both get beat by cheap bargain bin nonsense. Who knows how many other great animated(with effort) shows got beaten by that cheapness? I don't think they even truly liked it, I think they just wanted to do the popular thing so they don't get laughed at on the playground. But _who decides what's popular besides children's television???_ Ugh, I hate human life sometimes.

Makes me all the happier that I was one of the super rare kids that went against the grain (sort of but let me explain). I won't deny that 7-year-old me at the time was a fan of the OG "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" that we got in the U.S.A at the time; but I was by far and away, a FAR bigger fan of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise as a hole. (And 'Gargoyles" too when it premiered on the Disney Afternoon block soon after the other 2 shows did.) So, when all 3 shows were on T.V at the time, the priority of the shows in my mind at the time, went as follows: Top priority: Sonic SatAM (which only aired on Saturday mornings (provided of course, it wasn't superseded by a major league sports event (which happened about 40% of the time))). Mid priority: Gargoyles (which only aired on Fridays at the end of the Disney afternoon block at 4:30 PM (long after the Power Rangers, and other shows I watched at the time, were finished airing)). Low priority: "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" (Mainly due to it coming on Monday through Friday at 3:30 PM, and me only being able to make it back home from school in time to catch it, 50% of the time). (Keep in mind, that I'm fully aware that scheduling of these shows (be it the day, and/or time) very likely differed in other parts of the U.S.A at the time, AND that people have different entertainment preferences from mine (as it was CLEARLY shown in the ratings at the time, since the Power Rangers' popularity blew 'Sonic SatAM's, and Gargoyles' popularity out of the water (along with many other shows). And IF I had lived in one of these parts of the country where I HAD to make a choice at a conflicting time slot between those 3 shows mentioned above, I assure you that both 7-year-old, and 8-year-old me would have prioritized those three shows in the same order, without hesitation.)

In the Archie comics which goes on past the Satam cartoon, and has the same characters, it shows Antionne eventually growing from an imbecile cowardly coyote......to a serious, mature, and actually respectable sword fighter. He's not on Sonic or Knuckle's level of fighting, but he is much better than the average citizen. He actually moves on from his crush for Sally and marries Bunnie. If you read any of the Archie Comics, I recommend the 4-5 issue story arc (#46/47 - #50). You really don't have to read the issues before it or after it to understand things. It could serve as a standalone story. It revolves around Sonic being framed for Sally's murder. It also shows the origin of Robotnik. it shows how humans initally interacted with animorphic animals. It even shows Sonic's father in a flashback. In this arc, that's the first sign of Antionne starting to mature. Oh...........and it also has the most serious and brutal fight between eggman/robotnik and sonic in the entire history of Sonic. No robots.....just hand-to-hand fighting, so to speak. You won't see a fight like that anywhere else. In hindsight, it was pretty dark for a Archie aflliated comic, but still the pinnacle of the whole comic series.

I don’t know about you, but the idea of having anthropomorphic animals saving their Earth-like planet from the technocratic rule of a robot-obsessed villain sounds like it SHOULD be remade today! It’s basically the low hanging fruit in a private orchid that the copyright holders aren’t grabbing! Considering how far technology & animation have come since then, a rebooted take on THIS version of “Sonic the Hedgehog” would be AMAZING! It could be more like a long story like season 2, but right from the start. I’m not expecting the current movie franchise to do it at this point, but another “Sonic” reboot in the future should take advantage of this. They could easily redeem Antoine by giving him an arch of his own. PLEASE HEAR ME OUT! I could imagine him desperately trying to win over Sally, not because he loves her like Sonic, but more to win his way into royalty like a classical prince, only joining the freedom fighters for that exact same reason. This would make him the definition of a gold-digger. Through his missions with the freedom fighters, he could become humble, even sacrificing his own life to save a captured Sonic from being roboticised as Robotnik could deliberately break his leg so he can’t run away. WHAT DO YOU THINK?! ❤
@georgeeastwood69304 ай бұрын
Instead of frequently being on missions to Robotropolis, Antoine could be a chef in Knothole. Not only is this because he’s French (as France has a good history with food) but could also make him out of touch with the physical & emotional strain of the Freedom Fighters’ missions in Robotropolis. I also thought maybe Antoine watching Sally kiss Sonic instead of him could, in a potential reboot, further motivate him to OUT the location of Knothole to Robotnik. He could go on a mission himself with someone like Bunnie (or any new character) to Robotropolis & stay behind to prevent the others from being captured & roboticised. In reality, he is spared from robiticisation as he leads to all of the Freedom Fighters except for Sonic & Sally getting captured by the robot soldiers, maybe Antoine COULD even frame Sonic as the traitor, using his super speed to run into Robotropolis to inform Robotnik of the location to Knothole. This would cause an emotional rift between him & Sally that Antoine planned out of revenge for Sonic “stealing” his girlfriend (even though she wasn’t). This deal would sell beneficial to both Antoine & Robotnik; Robotnik would have his arch-nemesis Sonic captured & roboticised, while Antoine would have Sally captured & thinks Robotnik will force her to marry him so that he could become king (as he is so out of touch with the struggles of the Freedom Fighters). Also, by going this route instead of being an open love rival for Sally’s affections like in the original show, Antoine would suddenly go from the resident cook too cowardly to go on life-threatening missions to a Benedict Arnold-type traitor who Sally is forced to marry! After helping to get Sally captured, as well as Robotnik NOT forcing Sally to marry him so he could become king, Antoine could secretly turn a new leaf & finally stand up to Robotnik. He would secretly use a prototype robot suit Rotor the Walrus was building, knowing that none of the Knotholw Freedom Fighters want to talk to him following his infamous crime against them, Antoine, would secretly hack Robotnik’s complex system to free all of the Freedom Fighters (beyond Sally’s team) who haven’t been roboticised, suddenly releasing an army who use the rings to teleport to what remains of Knothole after it got burnt down. While this goes down, Sonic is actually captured, & Robotnik has his leg broken so he can’t outrun him anymore (at least long enough to have him roboticised). Antoine would help him escape through the fading ring portal & stay behind, out of genuine concern for the safety & well being of others this time! With that, Antoine would sacrifice his own life to buy the ARMY of freedom fighters more time to recover & for Sonic’s leg to heal. Despite asking them NOT to forgive him, Sally could dedicate a memorial service to Antoine, as if he has officially redeemed himself by taking the freedom fighters from a small group to a huge army who could populate a densely populated city like New York or London all by themselves! WHAT DO YOU THINK? 😊

I don't really remember a lot of the episodes. I did really like the show along with Underground and AOSTH. My favorite episode from AOSTH was the episode where Tails finds this weird black ball thing and Sonic, Tails, and weird Black Blob have a picnic with chili dogs.

I'm glad you liked it, and it's interested to see a perspective from someone who watched it many years later for the first time. I grew up with the early Sonic cartoons and both AoStH and SatAM were awesome, though as I got older I really enjoyed SatAM more for the reasons you highlighted. It's been a while since I've seen it, but yeah I totally get where you're coming from with Antoine. I forgot how annoying he was. Feels kind of like the Jar Jar Binks of Sonic, though despite, as you pointed out, he had so many centric episodes without any character growth, I actually found Dulcie more annoying, but that might be because Season 2 was lighter and I didn't really like the direction it went. Still, this video was a great watch!
