After sharpening your pencil, cut a 6 inch piece of pool noodle, then split it in half. You jab the freshly sharpened pencil tip in the noodle to clean off the graphite powder. Drafting pencil sharpeners have a ring of the same material as the pool noodle for the same purpose. Recently my brother and I sold our boyhood home. My dad had a Dixon Enduro #2 pencil sharpener mounted to the underside of one of the cellar steps. My brother now has it at his house mounted the same way. Still works like new. I even found a set of replacement rotor blades new in the box for it in my dad's junk box. There were several surplus Army and Navy stores in the area where I lived. There was always a large dummy practice bomb out front up above the sign. The place was loaded with odd smelling treasures. I loved going through all the old clothing. Most of my youth was spent wearing second hand military clothes. They were durable for sure.

That pick was made in Duluth Minnesota. Sometimes forget that Diamond tools were sold by Snap-On until they started the Blue Point which were made by Diamond. That pencil sharpener brings back memories. Some kids had pencils brand new that were nubs because they were always at the pencil sharpener to goof off.

The GI picks, entrenching tools, and hand axes were common in surplus stores in the 1950s and 1960s. I had one of the GI hand axes but my brother took and lost that. The picks with carrier were only a few dollars in the 1980s and were popular with gardeners. In the early 1960s, a lot of our Boy Scout equipment was GI surplus. Good Luck, Rick

I have exactly one of those picks from my uncle. I filmed it a year ago, but I don't think I ever put it in a video. I had no idea they would be disassembled to be carried. I just never thought about it before. 🤔 I learned something new today! 😁 I am excited to see the sling!

Hi Scout, I always loved the surplus stores but most of them are gone now and some of the ones that do survive have a lot of fake junk in them. I love my Boston sharpener and pull it down every couple of years and clean and lubricant it. Best pencil sharpener ever. I’ve emailed you a picture as I thought what are the chances, you’re in the US and I’m in Australia but look at the similarities. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

Fond memories of the pencil sharpener screwed to the wall on the stairs to the basement. Great for getting our pencils ready for homework and making lists. I worked in a library and you can imagine how often a pencil sharpener is used in that setting. Our maintenance department created weighted carriers from heavy lumber with an extra weight inside. I think they filled them with lead or buckshot. They would stay still while in use, but were portable if needed. Nearly every department had several for staff and patrons to use. A great adaption for a great invention.

Our early 60’s Surplus Store was crammed with every conceivable piece of WWII and Korea kit. Canvas packs, new leather boots and some with the previous owners name. Variable density googles, Garand bayonets, Binoculars, Flight suits and Flight jackets(some with artwork); still have an Army folding shovel I bought for .50 cents. There were barrels filled with those mattocks, it was a lovely place for a 10 year old with not a lot of money. Those pencil sharpeners were at the corner of every teacher’s desk at our elementary school, most likely working fine today.

When I was in the scouts my mother would take me to an Army Navy store on Bell Blvd for the uniforms. It pulls up some old memories. My friends father was in WW2 and his sons were in Vietnam and their garage had all kinds of WW2 paraphernalia like this pick axe and shovels and helmets. I remember his older brother coming home from Vietnam and he had a tremendous duffel bag that was like 5 feet long. Really brings back memories. I wonder what the pencil sharpeners in the UK looked like?

Hi John, I really enjoyed the WWII pick. I have the same fondness for Army Surplus stores. I definitely had my Army field jacket and a set of camp fatigues. I got my first pair of mirror aviator glasses in the early 70’s. I also had some Arctic over gloves and the woolen gloves. I used it when I shoveled snow. I have a Vietnam era (dared1968) trenching tool. Shovel on one side and pick on the other. It has a huge spring loaded pivot so you could change the position of the pick side and the shovel. I have the original leather scabbard. I keep it in my Jeep Rubicon as a just in case tool. We had the same pencil sharpener on the stud going down the basement steps. Maybe some of the younger viewers may not know what that pencil sharpener was. Unless all of your viewers are grumpy old men like us. Thanks for another great video. Best Regards, John

Nice job on the pick and pencil sharpener, I have an old one with a clear window to see the shavings, when they are attached to a wall there's no mistaking the pencil grinding sound that always takes me back to school days. My school had the same cloak room where we hung up our rain coats and stuff, I vaguely remember the walls had dark vertical beaded boards and those old fashioned cast iron coat hooks. For winter boots there were 2 schools of thought, those who wore boots that had zippers (me) and those who wore boots with buckles (them)

Did you put bread sacks over your shoes to make your boots slide off and on? In my school there were 2 schools of thought. Boots and no boots. The no boots always stayed on the playground while the boots could tear around the unshoveled areas. The no boots kids always seemed tt have more sick days than us hardy prepared kids. Cuddo to mom.

@@beerdrinker6452 Yes, I put bread wrappers over feet to keep them dry but it seems like it made my feet sweat so it didn't really help. I remember putting my gloves on the steam register to dry at school, they gave off a certain smell when they were drying. We had those who wore gloves like me and others who wore mittens, I never liked mittens but now that my circulation is not as good I think mittens keep my fingers warmer.

I remember as a kid going to downtown Jacksonville, Florida with my father and visiting the army/navy surplus store right there on Main Street. It was a massive store fall of things exactly like this pick. There were German helmets, German, insignia, Japanese bayonets, mess kits, uniforms, spent shells, and every other thing that a 10 year old kid would be so fascinated with that he would eventually get a degree in history. Little did my father know that those things in that store would be worth a small fortune 50 years later. Of course, I wanted them and asked him to buy them for me, but he said “son, what are you gonna do with this junk?”. Lol a little did he know………

In the 90's when I was a teenager, the army navy surplus near us had all manner of stuff that was mostly reproduction military style stuff, but they also had what seemed like a good selection of stuff from the former USSR! The Russian night vision scope was very popular. I bet Russia would like to have all that stuff back now that they are having difficulties equiping their mobilized troops!

Thanx, Scout. The youngins have no idea of how it was. I went through my old grade school a few year ago. I had forgotten that the classrooms were HUGE with 20 foot high ceilings. Also, there were boy's and girl's restrooms totally in marble in each classroom. And, each classroom had "cloak" rooms for each sex. Sad to say, it was torn down a couple of years ago and replace with a vinyl-sided POS retired persons apartment building. PS - Got exactly the same pencil sharpener that's also been working forever!

Very enjoyable. In grade school and high school we had Boston pencil sharpeners. They really worked and were almost il indestructable. I never realized that the graphite (a great dry lubricant by itself) off the pencil would serve to lube the cutters. Very nice resto on the trenching tool. I have a ww2 folding shovel marked Ames 1944 which has manufactured garden tools and shovels for many years. Thanks

We had a family Boston KS pencil sharpener that I remembered much of my life. At least 40 years or so. Unfortunately when I moved off the family home when it sold in '09 I forgot it! It was mounted inside my old bedroom closet door and used it often enough. I hated that I forgot once I remembered. However, I bought an X-acto which is just a shadow of the quality Boston. Damn! Couldn't remember everything. And remembered forgetting a lot of stuff after I moved.

John, i remember using that type of pencil sharpener at school , sometimes you will carry it away until it eats the pencil all the way it was a way to have fun, nowadays the kids play with the phone i guess . Schools nowadays don't allow the use of pencils unless it is for the multiple choice booklet sheet , they cancelled the pencils then the blue ink and only left the black ink pen. Thanks for bringing back memories

I've been tripping over one of those picks out in the garage for years and never realized that it was a military collectible. Went and found it, and lo and behold there, under the dirt and rust, was "US" on the pick-end, and "US" on the handle. I think it's pre-WWII.... And the pencil sharpener ! ScoutCrafter, Since the advent of the 0.5mm pencils I pretty much have used mechanical pencils. Except in the garage, where wood pencils have ruled the roost. Like most Americans I went the electric sharpener, corded or battery route. The problem with electric sharpeners is they don't work as good as the hand cranked models. My current garage has a wall mounted sharpener next to the light switch. The best sharpener I can remember is one my uncle had. It was a Boston hand cranked that was meant not to be mounted. Instead of the holes it had a set of jaws that were controlled by two finger tabs. The jaws were mounted in a frame that had two guide rods that were under spring tension. You squeezed the tabs, inserted the pencil while pulling the frame out. One hand cranked, one hand held the sharpener steady and the jaws pulled the pencil into the sharpener. It was the best sharpener I can remember using. It was also the only one I ever encountered. Bob

Great little project John, I'd love one of these, preferably the design in your pictures 3 & 4 as this is the one I had for my "Action man" toy back in the 70s ! I have a pick, a mattock and a couple (or five) Adzes and this simple handle design just works if you know how to use them and care for them. Those sharpeners with the spiral milling cutters are the superior way to sharpen pencils I have a modern one that is great (nice shallow angle), but grew up using them at school - anything utilising a conventional bevelled blade is just inferior and less long lasting too ! We loved Army surplus as kids, nothing better than heading off to the woods with a canteen of water and mess tin to make a fire and cook something over it, happy days !

Diamond Calk? The same company that made the wrenches? That's so cool! Same Boston pencil sharpener mounted sideways in my cellar stairway. Followed me from my last two houses. I,m convinced Chinese pencils are so bad just to break our indestructable old pencil sharpeners...

Great video. It's amazing what you come up with. I have one of those sharpeners in my shop. Only a newer version. It has a plastic cup. You know how that goes. Even though it is over 30 years old..lol. you have a great rest of week. 👍👍❤.

Nice work on the mattock. I'm surprised you don't have a wood burning tool from scouting. An old soldering iron can unscrew the tip and have a wedge for wood burning. I have the same Boston pencil sharpener on the end of my workbench. Now the surface rust is going to bother me till I clean it up. Yours looks amazing!

I have exactly one of these Boston sharpeners, but it does not seem to want to cut the wood very well. I assumed the blades had become dull so I use a different vintage sharpener that is a Chicago brand. I never thought 🤔 to inspect the cutters to see if there is something stuck in the cutters. I will take a look!

Sometimes the graphite tip will break off inside the cutter head, preventing the pencil to advance farther into the the actual cutter s.
@ScoutCrafter

The cutters are replaceable but you should only be using cedar pencils made in the USA. 😃👍

@@billmccabe9601 Thanks for the suggestion, but I am sure the cutters aren't cutting the wood well because the pencil comes out very rough on the wood. But I am going to take a close look at the cutters and I will verify that nothing is stuck where the tip needs to go! Thanks! 😁👍😁

@@jill552 really? I have some at work that I thought were wood, but the shavings tell a different story. Is it bad for the sharpener? I use a wonderful old electric Boston at work. If the not wood pencils are bad for the sharpener, I will pitch them and look for proper wood pencils.

That pick came out absolutely perfect! Love that pencil sharpener too. Id like to find two one for display and one to use. My grandmother had one in her hardware closet. When I was little I thought it was so cool that she had a pencil sharpener. I guess I thought only schools had them, lol.

Evan the hippy kids shopped at the Army Navy Surplus. I'd like to ask after you polish the pencil sharpener do you have any advice to stop the rest from coming back?( other than dry air.) I guess it's the polish you used I used dry stainless steel a few years ago. - that polish is great idea I'll try it. cheep stainless steel now a days so frustrating, It rust of you look at it funny You guys, that make you tutorials, you're the best! . . . and of course thanks to all the veterans who served then, now and in the future.

If you want a non-abrasive medium, my aunt used to use cloudy ammonia. You'd be amazed what four ought steel wool and cloudy ammonia do for brass. Just wipe it like you would with a cloth and it shines like new.

Hi Ron- that’s funny I never heard of cloudy ammonia. In fact, I had to look it up on Google to see what it was. Apparently cloudy ammonia is ammonia with a soap added. Hard to find around here. 😃👍

Ceiling joist? That's for mounting it under the lunch box shelf in the coat room? Love my Bostons, got three, errr four of them. One without the shaving body that was the 'shop sharpener' in my Great Uncle's Garage(he kept an old water dip bucket under it to catch the shavings) and also my Mom's old one, with a spring loaded auto feed grip on the face. Beautiful sharp points...ALL THE TIME!
