As a German, maybe it's interesting to give some background information for international viewers: (1) This movie was based on an actual case of serial killings, which happened in the city of Düsseldorf (in the far west, near the Dutch border), while M takes place in Berlin in the east, not far away from the Polish border. (2) The German penal system was and is somewhat liberal in comparison to Russia and the USA (with a notable exception being the years of Nazi rule... but this movie was made before that). Germany's penal system is made to rehabilitate people into society, and it is an ongoing discussion how to handle sexual predators. I understand this movie as being about this dilemma... letting the police and justice system do it, with the danger of it being to "mild", opposed to dealing out harsh justice for yourself. As of today, sexual predators serve their normal jail-time (which is way shorter than what's normal in the US). After this, they are involuntarily committed to special prisons, which work more like a psychiatric hospital. Convicts get treatment in form of therapy and medication, until they are deemed "safe" to return to the normal society. This has led to some scandals, as recently released convicts went on a rampage, so the discussion on what to do with them is an ongoing topic here. Note that the death penalty is a taboo here, in part due to the Nazi rule of 1933-1945.

(3) Maybe owning to the years of monarchy (until 1918) and the dictatorship of the Nazis (1933-1945), there is some romanticism about common criminals and a code of conduct, similar to the "thieves-of-law" (vors) in the Soviet Union and later Russia. While thievery is somewhat acceptable, as long as only rich people are targeted, sexual crimes are universally frowned upon. Even in jails and prisons, sexual predators are the considered the lowest-of-the-low. So it's not only the fear of crackdowns which brings the organized crime of Berlin to take on the murderer... it's also important for them to distinct them from him.

If I may ask, where do you live? I am in Germany, near the Dutch border. As far as I can tell, here we generally have two kinds of cinemas. The big commercial ones, where they only show new hollywood blockbusters, and small independent ones, which are sometimes subsidized, which show both new "avantgarde" films and old classics such as M.
@wuloki
@wuloki 4 жыл бұрын
@JuniorX EastNY Interesting to know. Over here, the ticket prices in art-house cinemas are somewhat lower compared to the big cinemas, but snacks are more expensive (they have the usual cinema stuff: popcorn, chips, dips, and beer). Subsidization depends on the city and which political party is in charge. Some cities do it, some do not. Funny thing is, our art-house cinema is in the most poor and dangerous part of town.

I think this could have been the kind of thought the movie wanted to get across. You see, I am living in Germany, and our penal system was designed to rehabilitate people, so that they can join society again (that is why german prisons would be considered luxury for someone jailed in the US or Russia. Of course, it was a different thing when the Nazis ruled, but this movie was made before that). But still, there is an ongoing discussion how to handle sexual predators. Currently, sexual predators here serve their sentence in jail, and are then involuntarily committed to special treatment centers which offer therapy and medication, which the convicts can only leave if there is a big chance that they won't repeat their crimes. This has led to some scandals, where people deemed "save" would go on a rampage again just after they were released. However, the death penalty is a taboo here (in part due to the Nazi past), so we go for the treatment-option, even if it is for the rest of their lives.

I'm so glad I went into this film almost completely blind, it was truly an experience, a (surprisingly) welcome assault on the ears and eyes, with the crisp black and white cinematography and the desperation in Peter Lorre's voice. That finale (which I almost had spoiled for me, but didn't) gives me chills.

Incredible movie. Incredible story. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat. I know the German language quite well however I still needed the English subtitles. The German is spoken fast in old German with heavy rolls of the tongue and many old world slang phrases. However the composition of the story said everything no matter what language when watched. It was a historical intriguing, deep thinking, thrilling, creepy, disgusting, horrifying movie with even a few extremely subtle witty scenes. This is a must see movie. It will stick with you for days.
@wuloki
@wuloki 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know if this helps you... the movie takes place in Berlin, and people speak the local dialect. The most important thing to know about the Berlin idiom is that the German 'g' is pronounced like a 'j'. For example, the word "ganz" (complete, in full) is pronounced more like janz. Also, words are spliced together (like in French). Also, there is a lot of slang (but that's a too long and too complicated topic to explain in full). However, if you got any question, feel free to ask.

INCREDIBLE! somehow you've managed to capture the beautifuly unique feel of the entire film, and the best parts of it in the best way, really clever to show it as what it is- a film of silence so contrasted to the instant gratification of modern film. I went to see it recently and it's impossible to even try to watch any modern hollywood films afterwards
