Considered by many to be one the greatest baritones of all time, Mattia Battistini (1856-1928) was most assuredly one of the most elegant and, not coincidentally, one of the best singing actors of all times. His costumes, his appearance, his classical mastery of stage Italian, easily comparable to or excelling that of the finest classically trained actors, set a standard in opera seldom rivaled. This 1911 recording from I Puritani is ample evidence.
