People say this movie is not successful for John Long's transformation is not convincing, yet I think Irons and Long both did an incredible job. Their acting and convey of emotions are beyond make-up. I cried my heart out on the final scene. This is a wonderful production and glad to see many people like it. Thanks to wargeek123!

Regardless the pro and con opinions for this movie, the wonderful acting of the main actors lone and irons are simply amazing and must I say it's the best performances that i've ever seen from this two actors' career so far even after 2015 and they both already 60th.

I fell in love with Jeremy Irons lately and have been watching as many movies oh his as I could. It is true that especially in romantic films he gets very similar roles. He is always the respectable man, who has been nothing but professional up to the day he meets a woman that makes him lose his mind with passion. Be it a 14 year old girl, his son's girlfriend or a chinese man. Anyway, it is undeniable that he got the whole "love at first sight" expression down to a science.

Well, John Lone might be eurasian but he's not entirely sure himself since he's an orphan. But does that matter? He's strikingly handsome but he's unique enough that he can pull off a variety of characters.

John Lone's also lean and muscular, and the close-ups of his face can still show the five o'clock shadow since this movie was made several years before they started using make-up that could hide it better.

O tema deste filme é lindo demais. Este filme me faz recordar meu querido irmão e conterrâneo terapeuta. Nossa equipe foi assistir esse filme e eu me lembro que ele chorava que nem criança, pq ele tb amou um chinês que o desprezou e o deixou sozinho. Vendo esse filme ele chorou lembrando desse amor. Tadinho do meu irmão conterrâneo.

@LaCarusiella Madame Butterfly was an opera based on more than race, it was a story of a young woman desperate to escape 1904 Japan. There has always been a sort of tension between how the west see's the east and the east see's the west. I thought the John Lone character Song LiLing (despite his/her denials) was falling in love with the eastern stereotype he/she created, probably the most interesting aspect of this film.

I think there's a lot of actors like that, especially among the most respected dramatic actors. I think there are very, very few true actors-- who actually transform into the character, instead of audiences seeing the character as the actor. Johnny Depp, for example, is a true actor. Robert Downey Jr. has become one as well (especially in Tropic Thunder and Chaplin). Meryl Streep also does an excellent job transforming. And yet, it is the true actors who typically get snubbed come award season.

i know i will get a lot of butthurt from saying this, but despite being a jeremy irons fan i cant help but to say that his acting seems the same. the tone of voice, his mannerism, how he moves and walks, his distinct british accent. its like watching him play humbert2 in another movie. i sometimes cant understand how he managed to get 2 oscars. i've watched most of his films though..

That's true, you are absolutely right about that. But, I have to say that he is supposed to be a Beijing Opera actor here. They can definitely hit the high notes, if they're lucky even of a soprano aria, it is /certainly/ not impossible for a man to do so. It is rare, yes, not impossible. And besides, it's a movie. Everything is possible in movies.

Yes, I agree with you, tiikeri00. And it is certainly not impossible for a man to sing high notes. Just look at Leslie Cheung who played Dieyi in Farewell My Concubine, a Beijing opera artist playing female roles (Dan). I admit, the way of singing is a lot different there, but still, he gets to the high notes.

Natashkk: Well in the actual play Song is not supposed to have sung particulary well. Also in typical Chinese Opera especially many years ago, all parts were played by men even the female ones. Plus you have to see it from Rene's point of view. He is transfixed by this beautiful woman, almost blinded by her, and thus he will see and hear what he wishes.

The aria's name is "Un bel di, vedremo", (One Good Day), from the Italian opera "Madame Butterfly", by Puccini. English Translation of Italian lyrics follows: One good day, we will see Arising a strand of smoke Over the far horizon on the sea And then the ship appears And then the ship is white It enters into the port, it rumbles its salute. Do you see it? He is coming! I don't go down to meet him, not I. I stay upon the edge of the hill And I wait a long time but I do not grow weary of the long wait. And leaving from the crowded city, A man, a little speck Climbing the hill. Who is it? Who is it? And as he arrives What will he say? What will he say? He will call Butterfly from the distance I without answering Stay hidden A little to tease him, A little as to not die. At the first meeting, And then a little troubled He will call, he will call "Little one, dear wife Blossom of orange" The names he called me at his last coming. All this will happen, I promise you this Hold back your fears - I with secure faith wait for him.

Asian culture is heavily into femininity, and men who are feminine are looked at as sex symbols by a lot of women. Also, while some asian men look very masculine, others do not, so their male characteristics are easy to hide and their feminine ones more to expose. Normally asians are of small stature, have long silky hair, and rarely are they overweight, which makes it easy for them to look like women. Sometimes its easy to tell, others its not, depends on the person in question really.

What do you mean by the actual play song is not supposed to be sung particularly well?? The aria (not song!) in this opera (from Puccini, an Italian composer not Chinese!) can only sung by a soprano, because of its extraordinarily difficulty and technique ! No man could ever sing this aria! Not even a contratenor!

@Biankito I'm sorry, but men who are feminine are not looked at as sex symbols to Asian women. Men who look like MEN are much more attractive to us. As an Asian woman born and raised in Asia, I can vouch for that.
