Making the most of this year’s unusually good summer in Iceland - we travel back out into the Highlands. We visit a bunch of waterfalls, traverse immense black sand plains and enjoy the peaceful seclusion of a hidden oasis.
Enjoy!

That drain is perhaps the scariest thing ive ever heard of. So subtle, yet deadly.

We were certainly spooked by it! The current was so powerful flowing into the hole, I had to make sure I had good footing on dry ground so I didn't slip in.

Great sharing and info! Thanks! Just checking, to complete the journey as per ur itinerary that you are offering, that will take how many day?

Glad it was helpful! The journey shown in this video was done just in 1 day, taking about 8-10 hours, depending on where you stop. This area of Iceland can only be reached during the summer time, as the roads are normally closed from late in the year until the following June. You need a good 4x4 to reach these spots, I use a Jeep Renegade and it managed to cross all the rivers leading to the Mælifell mountain.

Great video. Did you have to drive through big rivers on the route you've done to Maelifell?
@VividIceland
@VividIceland Жыл бұрын
Thanks! And yes, the biggest river we had to cross was Hólmsá - it wasn't too deep and my Jeep Renegade managed to ford it without issue. We were also lucky because it hadn't been raining for a few weeks so water levels were low in all the rivers in the area. So if you're thinking of doing a crossing, check the weather forecast a few days before going and maybe watch someone else go through before attempting it.

Great video! We’re planning on going from Landmannalaugar to Maelifell, but most campervan rentals won’t allow to drive on F210. Happy Campers has no restrictions though. Do you think a campervan 4x4 is suitable to cross those rivers?
@VividIceland
@VividIceland Жыл бұрын
Thanks! To answer your question, it really depends on the 4x4 camper and the amount of clearance it has. I managed to cross Hólmsá in my Jeep Renegade, for reference. It also depends on how much rain there has been over the few days before you attempt to cross. If it's been raining quite a bit, I'd avoid driving F210 and take F232 instead. Hope this helps!

Thank you for taking the time 😊 It’s a VW Caravelle with raised chassis, 30” tires and snorkel. Oh wow, we’ve totally missed F232! It’s better to drive from the South/Ring Road instead?

Btw, the dangerous river where you decided not to cross, is that Holmsá? 😊
@VividIceland
@VividIceland Жыл бұрын
@@MissNeverending Nope, the dangerous river is near the lake Álftavötn. I think it's called Syðri Ófæra

@@MissNeverending OK I think that will make it over the crossing I did, just check how much rain there has been in the area for the few days before you go. I think you could probably drive from the Ring Road, going North on F232, check out Mælifell. Then take the road east across Holmsá and finally south on F210 which will lead you back to the Ring Road.

Hi. Great video. I am heading to these locations next month. I was planning to get to Maelifell via F232 from the south as I do not want to attempt Holmsa. I am confused as to how you approached Maelifell without crossing Holmsa as it seemed you visited Axlafoss first.
@VividIceland
@VividIceland Жыл бұрын
Yes you're correct, we did Axlarfoss first and we had to cross Holmsá. It was an easy crossing: not very deep due to the lack of rain over the last few weeks. (I'm driving a Jeep Renegade for reference.) Honestly, F232 is the more scenic route so it's probably the best choice.

Hi Josh another great video mate, I love how your videos are so informative well done. Been binge watching as I'm trying to get as much info for my trip in September. Is it possible to drive to Maelifell without crossing any rivers or water? Cheers Eric 👍
@VividIceland
@VividIceland Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! To get to Mælifell, you will have to cross a river regardless of which direction you choose to come. By far the easiest option would be to come from the south using F232, basically doing the reverse of what we did in the video. The river over Blafjallafoss is very shallow and easy to cross, then you'd just have to backtrack down F232 and you'll avoid any serious river crossings like Holmsa, which we did when using F210.
