That Kanjira was too superb. It added so much of richness to the already superb song. What a song? Now I want to write an essay about it.What an alapana, dear god,it felt like a thunderbolt that struck continuously for 27 minutes.Felt like a channel opened up between heavens and earth,I did not think I will open my eyes again.yes Nidhi, dadhi, navaneetha, ksheeramulu, nothing as sweet as rama's bhajana sudha rasam. And yes tyagaraja's kriti gives utmost happiness, only if ms amma sings it.

What a brilliant kalyani raag alapana and an equally magnificent rendition of an ethereal kriti. I have also had the good fortune of listening to at least 2 more kritis in kalyani by m s amma and Radha amma, needu charana pankaja and bhaja re te chitta. The rendition of both these kritis was mesmerizing to say the least. Among the later crop of musicians no has even come anywhere near her !!!!

I agree with the sentiments. VN sir is brilliant. The richness is also enhanced by brilliant handling, especially of the 'thopi' by TKM sir by the intelligent prayogams of solkattus and 'appropriate' shadow playing by ghatam legend, Vikku Vinayakaram sir. Great team work by the 'pak(k)a' vaadhyams in embellishing the great rendition by MS amma. These clips serve as indispensable learning tools for aspiring musicians.

Ashish Iyer, nothing wrong if Carnatic musicians sing for cinemas. Smt M S Subbulaxmi herself sang six songs in the movie Shakuntala, in which she also acted as Shakuntala, in 1940, when she was 23- 24 years old. She also sang and acted in the movie Meera. A few other great Carnatic vocalists in the 1930's also sang for cinemas. Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, Pennsylvania
Thyagaraja's Ram , in most attributes, is much different than the political Ram of these days or even that of the ancient.. Perhaps he sang more or less like his predecessor poets and composers of the bhakti tradition..Kabir and Tulsidas though represented different streams of the bhakti movement, their Ram was the imagined embodiment of human virtues... !

SriSamaganam, BrAhmaNaya namah. You are correct in a limited sense of su = eu, as in Greek BUT ; codayitrI sunRtAnAm cetanti sumatinAm yajnam dadhe etc. you can see that the sense is more than "good, pleasant, right, correct". It does go a step beyond, tending towards those who are pure, pure of mind, pure of heart, pure in their actions. What do you think? Again, suhasinim, sumadhurabhasinim : here, the su is far more emphatic than merely good or pleasant: the smile of the mataram is seen to be exquisitely beautiful and pure, well beyond the good/pleasant, and so is Her bhasha. Examples like this can be multiplied. What you must keep in mind, as your own name indicates, is that in the Vedic period, there was jsut BhAShA and ChAndasa. BhAShA was the name given to language spoken by everyone, and there was no separate term for it, no Hindi, Marathi, Tamizh, etc. What was spoken as inspired language by the "kavi" the seer, the mantradraShTrA, that whch was "kavikratu" was termed "ChAndasa". Naturally, just as in English, the meaning of words shift in verse from their accepted use in common parlance, so too ChAndasa usage is strongly different from BhAShA, and the two never can be comparable. It is not merely poetic licence, but one is kavikratu, the other is vaikhari vAk. Huge, huge difference. Kavikratu NEVER is vaikhari, it is arising from infinitely purer planes, at least PASHYANTI if not ParA. This is why we accept them as SHRUTI. Why do we SING the SAMAN? To touch the Nada brahman; you know the Maheshwara sutrani, yes? To enter the nada brahman, where non-conceptuality is achieved by negating the concpetual mind, and buddhi, which is samvrtti. That is why we SING, and is why the term VIPRA, who vibrates, trembles, is also applied. Respected Sir, how can MERELY GOOD or PLEASANT be applicable here? Must not PURITY be the CRITERION?, SAmagA, must you not aim for absolute purity, shreya, at all times, not preya, pleasant? Setuuu....uun..stara dustaraa..aaa.aaan. Namaskar.

one correction paramparaa!!Though my english is not as exquisite as yours,I think I can still point at a small correction here.I am very glad that you gave the narrative for the song, but I think su in sanskrit means good /pleasant and not pure.Like Su-Jata,Su-mana,Su-swara. SO Sumati means good natured, good intending and not Pure-minded Rama!! Well, its 0.00001% probablity that paramparaa sir is wrong and that I am right but forgive my ignorance if any. Thanks!!

Tyagaraja in this song condemns Nara stuti and says only Rama has to be venerated. But we so many people going against this principle, even established carnatic musicians(except a few like the honorable MS amma) selling their voices to film music and Nara stuti. Might be a hard fact to digest. To live up to Tyagaraja's idea of life is a hard task.
