SATD is still one of my favorite albums of all time! I saw them on that tour opening for Ozzy Osbourne, & it was such a a cool concert that me & my friends talked about it for months afterwards! Nikki Sixx knew that having a pentagram on the cover & dressing in leather & makeup would have a huge impact on album sales & tour attendence, making him a marketing genius! 80s metal will always live on for the impact it had on the world!

I'm 51, I discovered Motley Crue in 6th grade watching MTV, then as I got older and was getting into Metal....I knew if the tape or cd had the Parental Advisory sticker...I would probably like it!!! That sticker movement lined a lot of musicians pockets in the day!!

I’m 67 and collect Metal from the eighties, started in the seventies. Back during the PMRC and satanic panic era my first wife wrote a letter to the opinion section of the Bradenton Herald. She said that I listen to this music all the time and that I’m a nice and laid back mellow kinda guy lol. The MC pentagram originally belonged to Ratt and MC asked if they could they’re pentagram and they said go ahead because they weren’t going to use it as a backdrop anymore

Being completely unaware of the PMRC, my parents did take notice of the "bad music" I was into during the mid 80's They confiscated EVERY album I had (about 100 albums at the time) including Slayer, Venom etc and of course Shout At The Devil💀

Was getting ready for mass listening to shout at the devil. My mom just said this is what you’re listening to before church. My parents couldn’t help hearing my music, along with the neighbors. My parents never said anything about my glam rock and metal days. In fact after the ban she’d buy me my albums.

I'd like to start with Live Wire. My friend went to LA for the weekend, and he came back with a homemade cassette. He tells me, this is the shit they're listening to down there, with a silly grin on his face. Live Wire comes on, and I was hooked. 🎸 OK, back on topic. I remember all the nonsense with Tipper and her crew. Of course, we thought it was ridiculous, but I was already in my mid twenties. I never bought an album, or didn't buy an album because of a sticker. Then, when they actually did those hearings in DC, I thought Zappa and Dee did a great job at being Defenders Of The Faith 🤘 It's like Lemmy said, rock n roll is Supposed to piss of your parents!

I remember seeing Tipper Gore holding up Pyromania saying "burn the building! Burn burn burn the building " looking back Def Leppard is one of the most kid friendly bands of the day. Not to mention all the things that the PMRC said the music was pushing were being pushed many more times harder on the Hollywood movie screens but that was never a problem?

One day I got a package from my mom and it contained a SATD cassette with a note that said these guys look like your kind of music. My mom who was born in 1937 turned me on to the Crue 😂. May she rest in peace.

(And we all know the lies of the Gores now...... right?) Back then I could never understand the fixation of US with Crue and Metallica, mostly into British metal and Dio back then. No, I'm not Pom nor Yank. Anyway, we had a gent addressing us at school back in 88 or 89 warning us against the occult and "exposing" the satanic Metal with the whole thing of backtracking and all that. "Satanic panic. Very interesting presentation, loved the pics on display of my heroes, did not had access to much of that back then. A good friend of mine turned satanist shortly after that 3hr long presentation. Many years later he converted to Christianity and he told me he was so impressed with the warnings of that gent about orgies, free booze, the "power" over people etc. that caused him to be interested in exploring. My conclusion is that there are indeed some threats in that all if you are not on your guard. Some stuff/bands I just completely pass. One needs to decern and not put yourself in the firing line because there is indeed a spritual battle for your soul taking place. However, that presenters, moms and senator wifes caused othe complications not for the good. My parents were cool like yours. My dad just used to say that it sounds like a bunch of cats in October month combined with lightning and thunder! 😂 52 and still loving my Priest, Maiden, Nightwish, Ryche, DT, Megadeth, Boston, Sting, Beethoven (The original Metalhead!) Love your content!

Besides the PMRC, there were a lot of groups / companies putting out literature and advising organizations (school boards / councilors, municipal governments, etc.) on the danger to American youths posed by heavy metal, punk rock and loud guitars in general. A lot of the "information" was laughably ridiculous. I remember a widely distributed booklet claiming heavy metal fans preferred leather clothing because it was easy to wipe off the vomit.

I got into the Crüe at 7 years old back in 1986. My first exposure to them was the Theatre of Pain album (cassette). The next thing I checked out was SATD. My (older brother's) tape didn't have the original pentagram cover, but the 4 head shots of the band. It was a long, long time before I even knew about the original cover. I noticed the track listing on this is out of order - is this the order of the songs on this version of the album? Interesting...

Cheap Trick put a backwards track on their 1978 "Heaven Tonight" album. It was a blatant sound. It was also sped up. They did it to get the attention of the preachers who were accusing rock bands of trying to turn kids into devil worship. I got the album when it was still fairly new and it is so obvious when you hear it that you are tempted to play it backwards, which I did. It's hilarious because as you're trying to spin the record backwards you can't do it very well to keep a constant speed. It is a recording of someone sarcastically reciting "The Lord's Prayer".

I remember in 1984, Motley did an in store signing for shout at the devil. It was held at a music store in the local mall named RecordBar. The line was out the main doors of the mall. I was 11 yrs old waiting with all these older teens and anticipating meeting the band. It was very cool Not long after that, the PMRC formed and started attacking our music during the Satanic Panic. The formation of the PMRC was my first introduction into how government bigfooted personal choices. Who knew rap would be so accepted with its messages of violence and drugs. Personally, the only thing the PMRC accomplished was to allow performers to be more raunchy and disgusting knowing their only punishment would be warning label. Look at where music is now. Thank Tipper. Metal never dies. P.S. If you want to hear an interesting opinion into the PMRC or the Washington Wives, listen to WASP's Live in the Raw. Blackie has a great take on it.

I was a BIG Crue fan in 1984 and was just getting into music, 7th grade and was fascinated with ALL the metal at the time! Huge Dio, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Iron Maiden fan as well. I had ALL the Circus magazine posters up on my wall as well as a HUGE Crue posted with the giant pentagram in my room. My mom never said anything but my dad one day walked in my room and said is this ALL safe? And I told him, ya dad, its just music and showmanship (you know kinda like Elvis and rock n roll. He was like ok, he was ok with it and said, “Ok, I guess since its just music that’s ok, BUT don’t bring in any satanic spirits in this house, because if so all the posters go away! We both just laughed and that was the end of all that😂

I wonder - 1. How much tax dollars was given/spent by the PMRC? 2. What did they actually accomplish? (Imagine if they were around now) Like you, my parents really didn't do anything regarding the music I listened to, though my mom was not a fan of Black Sabbath Live Evil (which she was forced to listed to every day as she drove me to/from work). And like you, I don't think I really rebelled, though time would come for when I would 'open my eyes'. That Shout At The Devil album was sooooooo awesome to my 14 year old ears/eyes. I couldn't get enough of that era........

My parents thought the PMRC were stupid, what they did was push more kids into heavy metal, it was a win win for the bands. I remember whn I bought WASP's 'F**k like a beast,' my parents only stipulation was that I didn't play it in fromt of my little sister, who was 8 years younger than me. That said, my mother loved Meatloaf and my dad would listen to all my music except bands like Motley, cos they wore make-up. I don't get why our parents, who had lived through the hippie era and listened to Elvis, The Animals, etc etc etc, were so outraged. Mine weren't they got it, they understood the appeal to our teen minds. My dad was more offended by the song 'Sex on the Beach,' than anything I ever played. :)

This vid inspired me to spin my old Motley Crue albums. For the first time in many years. Like you, I was really impressed by Live Wire and the whole Too Fast For Love album. It hasn't aged very well. At the time I thought it sounded raw and high energy. Now it just sounds sloppy, as in "poorly performed". The tempos are all over the place. With all band members often wildly disagreeing on what the tempo should be. Shout At The Devil still sounds good though. Theatre Of Pain was quite disappointing to me at the time. It still sucks. I pretty much lost all interest in them at that point. So I don't have any of the subsequent albums.

Ah yes, the famous PMRC senate hearings, or 'Scapegoat Central' .In addition to Dee and Zappa making fantastic contributions to Metal's (and art in general) absurd need to defend itself, I thought John Denver appearing absolutely helped torpedo 'The Washington Wives' ridiculous over- reaching and backfiring claims. Theres a great song by Ice-T called 'Freedom of speech' where he totally tears em all a new one, even if youre not into 'Rap' ,I think youd like that one Rob its starts with a Jello Biafra commentary , issuing a dire warning on the arbitrary and crushing use of govt. control /censorship over a sample of Sabbath's 'Black Sabbath'. My folks were totally supportive of my zest for all things metal, they'd already been through the Elvis and Beatles /Stones years of 'Establishment clampdowns' and knew all the imagery etc, was just pure showbiz and entertainment , Rob Halford brings that up in the song 'Parental Guidence' on Turbo. Anyway , top show again and Cheers.

Interesting! Last evening after I did this show I discussed it with my wife and we actually talked about Jello Biafra. It's fascinating that these people, who had lived through the Beatles and Elvis (and certainly saw the folly of it, if not the danger of the mob mentality) were the very people to start this movement. Judas Priest was thrown in the middle of the mayhem when they were taken to court over how their lyrics had supposedly influenced a disturbed young kid. Somehow this is all in human nature to pass the buck, point fingers, etc. What a crazy time! Thanks for the input!
