I know this video is long but I wanted to get everything in one video. Here are some points to jump to if you are impatient.
3:10 for disassembly of the lower
7:50 for disassembly of the bolt
11:10 for reassembly of the lower
20:38 for reassembly of the bolt
The soundtrack is provided by the birds outside my window :)

I field stripped an M2 carbine for three years on active duty and five in the reserves, but never disassembled the bolt itself. I'm 84 years old and can still do it. Young man, thanks for doing a really complete job!

Hello. Thank you for your video. I am a 46 years old Korean. This reminds me my experience as a soldier because your M-1 Carbine was definitely a Korean Army issue by the stamping on the side of buttstock and a number over white painting on the bottom of grip. 27 years ago, one of my duty were keeping the M-1 Carbines as working rifles for our veterans reserve unit. As I was trained with the M16A1, it was really interesting to touch the Korean War era rifles. The pain in the neck was book keeping their serial numbers because the serial numbers were carved under the rearsight assembly. We used red oil pen and cellophane tape. M1 carbine is so light to carry. My grandfather told me that people could buy a M1 Carbine with a sack of rice when he was young, just after the Korean War because some hungry soldiers sold their rifle for food. I feel sorry for that my country sold the rifles to America because they were given to my country for free. Do you know that Korean Special forces loved the M2 Carbines because they were more reliable than the M1 Garrard except during cold winter?

This is by far the best video I have seen for a complete disassembly of a 30 carbine. I converted an old 30 carbine that was manufactured in 1968 into a really cool tactical tool. I purchased a Choate tactical stock from Midway USA that has a handgrip similar to an AR with an adjustable butt stock. After seeing your video I plan to completely take down and have all the parts coated with Cerakote coating. Your video has given me the confidence to tackle this. Thank you for posting this!!!!!

Great video, and such a young man caring so much for an old rifle! Helpful! Hints, the mainspring follower rod is designed to use the point to retract safety/mag. catch spring, and push out all service pins. The stepped end works great to move and hold sear rearwards while pinning. Also fits through hammer spring hole allowng one finger on either side of trigger group to stop spring kinking.I also piont the trigger group, hammer face down away from me, and use the large group-reciever pin dropped through the back of casting to help alighn hammer spring without kinking.also prefer to keep an extra bolt {headspace confirmed) as they only need soaked, shook and oiled ready to go.Most faliures I have seen is from extractor backing out due to improper reasembly or damaged extractor plunger failure. Leave the bolts to the pros cause when they come apart, they will destroy your reciever-(gun) and posibly your hand or face!Sending best wishes to all the carbines out there, and the wonderful people who care for them!

Just came across this video after picking up an Inland M1 carbine and after taking it to the range a few times this month decided it was time to field strip it (including disassembly of the bolt- which I almost regretted). After several attempts at trying to get the extractor back on (damn that little detent!) I might have figured out an easy to do it without pliers and three hands (the bolt 'tool' might actually do this as well). I grabbed a flat head punch set and used the punch that had the same diameter of the extractor 'pin' that fits through the bolt holding the firing pin and ejector. With the extractor out I put the firing pin in and pushed down the ejector to align the tabs for inserting the extractor. Before I inserted the extractor I pushed the center punch tool through the opposite side of the bolt until it held the ejector and firing pin in position. I was then able to ensure the extractor detent was positioned correctly and began inserting the extractor pin while using a small flat head screwdriver to hold the detent down. The extractor easily locked into position and pushed the center punch out at the same time thereby completing the bolt assembly...and it only took two hands! Anyway, I was impressed with myself after cursing out the original engineer who designed the bolt assembly for an hour or so! I also used a Dremel tool and some Flitz metal polish on the feed ramp and smoothed out several rough areas of the receiver and bolt assembly- M1 ran great today! Now if I can just get the damn magazines to work better- I think they are the cause of most of the malfunctions I still occasionally experience. Anyone know any tricks to make them work better? Stay safe all- Major Barry (USA ret.)

Excellent video! I was cleaning and disassembling my Uncle's 1960's Plainfield M-1. Disassembling the trigger group was initially beyond my capabilities. The close-up video was the difference between assembly or staring at 8 parts on my work bench. It is more difficult than it looks! Trying to get that spring seated correctly and lining up the holes was extremely frustrating!

One thing in the bolt does need replacement sometimes is the extractor. The stock part is very brittle, and the lip that holds in the case groove will often chip away. I had a couple of them fail that way, and solved it by smoothing the overly sharp edges lightly with a Dremmel tool. Never had a failure again after thousands of rounds. The bolt tool does make that work a lot easier.

It amazes me just how simple this gun is to take apart! I was expecting it to be more complicated than this. Or maybe you just made it look easy, either way, thanks for this video! I found one of these I'm my dad's collection and unfortunately it has got a decent amount of rust build up. Will likely still take it to a gunsmith to get that resolved but atleast now I can take the gun apart to see how bad it may have gotten.

This has to be one of the best ones out there, I was wondering if you cold make a short video where you just zoom in on all the individual parts and rotate them so we can see better how they look like in detail and how they function. (For example how the extractor grabs into the rim of the bullet, how the operating slide rotates the bolt, etc etc.

clement concodora Oh...I forgot...I had to change out the piston, which had snapped inside the gas housing making the carbine (my old Plainfield) basically a single shot rifle...I don't think you showed the piston and nut removal. You need a tool to remove the piston nut, but its do-able. In the process the trigger spring slipped off somehow. What a mess, but it got all back with your help.

There is a tool to dissemble the bolt available for about $15. Well worth it. It also facilitates reassembly easily. You have an M-1 carbine, you should have this tool. It will save your sanity , and you don't have to dig and scratch around with a screwdriver. Just pony up the bucks and get the tool. You could be enjoying a cool one by now, instead if fiddling around like this. You'll thank me .

Great video. Just a little dark.You need a bolt disassembly/reassembly tool and trigger spring tool. I use a slave pin to hold trigger and sear and sear spring together. That hole in top of the sear is to help you position the sear. You might like to use the NRA disssembly/reassembly book for nomenclature for parts names to keep everyone on the same page. I've been working on M1 carbines since was 16, over 55 years now and appreciate your hard work in making the video. More power to you! Sincerely, Mel ps I subscribed!

Man I had to give up tonight on reassembling the trigger group, where you put that guide pin through the spring and compress it against the hammer. Just couldn't do it anymore, after 45 minutes my hands were too sore. I think the problem is that relief cut in the back of the trigger assembly piece is soooo fricking shallow, it's so hard to keep the spring in it. And I just can't get the pin to go in that hole in the back whether I try from the top of the hammer like you showed or the side, it's not lined up straight enough and is hitting the side of the hole. Ugh PS that trigger assembly will never be fully taken down again, ever lmao. It's ridiculous. I totally stripped everything cause it was dirty as heck and full of cosmoline-like stuff when I purchased it, but never again after/if I get it back together. May have to just bring it to a gunsmith, since I was gonna do that anyway to confirm it was good to fire. Way harder to put together than anything else I've done, like a Garand or Yugo M48.
@clamum9648
@clamum9648 2 жыл бұрын
Lmao I try again tonight, thinking I'll need to take it to a gunsmith if I fail again, and get it in there on the first try. I watched your video again beforehand, and tried putting the pin in there without the spring around it, and going straight on, down the hammer, but mine does not fit like yours did (the pin hits the bottom in the hole of the trigger assembly and cannot slide down the hammer into its groove). I have to go from the side of the hammer, it's actually more of a straight shot from the pin to go into the hole in the trigger housing that way and doesn't cause your spring to bend, though you still need to hold it a bit at the start to guide it because that ridiculous cut in the trigger assembly is so shallow (where the spring rests). Anyway, appreciate your video big 🐕 it's very good. Now I just gotta finish reassembling the rest so I can shoot it this weekend woot.
