Surprised they don't have a notation for the front sight retaining pin and key. I've refurbished several, finding the normal cylindrical pin, a couple with a tiny bevel on one end, and several simply using roll pins. (Which seems to work quite well.) The keys have had several configurations: With bevels, without, and even squared and ground sides, which look like bar stock just cut, ground & drilled to fit the pin. I'm not sure if these were expedient repairs or possibly replacement parts from when in foreign use.

I just purchased an M1 carbine Receiver: Quality Hardware and Machine Corporation Barrel: Underwood 8-43 Stock is an Inland I cut. Trigger group is made by Inland. I’ve only put 3 rds through it. It’s my favorite gun by far.

On the flip type rear sights, some have a large S and others have a small s. Is there any significant reason to install are particular one?
@norwich93CMP4 жыл бұрын
Different manufacturers had different subcontractors. At times the font makes a difference. Beware of flips on eBay as 99% are fake. Once in a while there are legit ones. I recommend Craig Riesch's book.

Love the videos!! I purchased my first M1 and the data sheets and videos are helping me understand the history of it. There are not that many markings on it though. I've only found 4 markings. 1."Winchester" and serial number 6508782 stamped under the rear site. No marking on the bevel. 2."Underwood (with the flaming bomb) on top of the barrel". 3. Carbine markings on the reciever. I have 2 dots. 4. Plate behind the bevel has a "W" on it. There are no markings on the stock or handguard. Buttplate is square. I understand the possibility of the underwood barrel as explained in the video; but do you think my gun is not original since I can find any Winchester markings on the stock and handguard? Thank you and I look forward to watching the other videos.
@norwich93CMP2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the barrel is not original. You should be finding a W on many of the parts (trigger, sear, mag catch, bolt, handguard, trigger housing, to name a few)

@@norwich93CMP I've been going through your videos and completing the data sheet as I go. I've found markings on the Reciever, Slide, and Bolt. I have not disassembled the bolt as of yet though. I want to get the tool before I do that. Reciever markings, other than the ones I mentioned earlier are a W on the right side and what appears to be a 7 near and below it (close to the trigger) and a B on the bottom. The rear hole (7) is full with bushing or washer. Slide markings are a W inside bottom and 2 J's beside each other with one higher than the other on the "ledge". Outside bottom is 716009. I can't see an I after the 9 as you state in your videos. Top of the box wall is a D. Bolt has a W on the right Lug and what appears to be an N below that on the side of right lug. I don't think the stock and handguard are orginal to the gun either. There was a sticker stuck to the handguard with "RSG" written on it. Only markings I have found on the stock is "RMC" in the sling well and a "U" on the left, middle about that. In your videos you state that Underwood had a surplus of barrels and other manufactures would use the barrels. Would that manufacture strike through the underwood name (as they would on the reciever) and put their name and mark? Again, thanks for the videos. I'm enjoying watching them and learn as I complete the data sheet. Great learning experience.

hi cleaning a gun for a friend just checking all parts was wondering if the ring for the gas piston should it be tight because i can move it just alittle with my finger before it gets tight again
@norwich93CMP2 жыл бұрын
It should be staked enough where the castle nut does not spin.

I've got my grandpa's M1 carbine and it has a 5 digit serial number and 07-42 General motors barrel. Is there much significance to the serial number being only 5 digits?
@norwich93CMP Жыл бұрын
No not really other than the 1942 dated barrel. There maybe some earlier features on your rifle though that were not seen later.

I have a IBM reciever, barrel (no date nor proof) and front sight band. The band is loose (little wiggle, not much) even with the retaining pin pinned and staked. Not sure if the band is big or the barrel small. Have you run into this issue? Thinking of just Rocksett the band and live with it. Advice?
@norwich93CMP2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I haven't heard of this problem before. I would check to ensure the key is there and the pin being the right size, that's where I would start.

Seems to me, there were replacement front sights made with a slightly different diameter. I don't remember if they were for commercial/contract replacement barrels or just barrels with an excessively tight tolerance. (I have one like that. I had to emery cloth and polish the inside to get the replacement sight on, and it was STILL tight.)

greetings from phillipines my friend of mine have a Winchester M1 on the markings but it was m2 serial number 1263626 and the rear sight marking in the rightside says I.R.C.O any info about this and it is underfold paratrooper😁

Greeting to our Filipino cousins! The Winchester should be 726... 100XXXX was the first Winchester production. IR CO rear sight can be original to the rifle.

Excellent videos! Thank you for doing these and helping the M-1 Carbine community out. I’ve watched all of them. I have a new to me 09/1944 Inland Carbine. I’m going to start filling the Data sheets out. It has several hieroglyphs on the bottom of the receiver starting at just in the rear of the the gas piston and going for about 2 inches. It looks somewhat like this: I I (The I’s have three horizontal lines across it from top to bottom.) 3 4 I (with 3 lines) An M stamped over an N and an A with an X and an I and a circle stamped over it all. (It’s hard to tell exactly what the letters are though) 2 2 1 S I have pictures of it also. Do you know what all of this means, if anything? Thank you, Mark.

Just believed to be inspector marking during the manufacturing process.

I have Winchester M1 carbine but does not have any type front sight key spline on the barrell what does that mean?
@norwich93CMP2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you are referring to with your question. With a front sight on you will not be able to see the cut for the key. IBM has an I cut type and some can be seen. Does that help? WRA 99.9% of the type had the oval style which cannot be seen.

Do a singer made receiver for Underwood second block I've had a lot of people tell me that that's fake. Funny that I own one.
@norwich93CMP3 жыл бұрын
Nope Singer did make them. They have to have a B on the bevel below the serial number. All were in the 2 million serial number range.
@richardflora51733 жыл бұрын
@@norwich93CMP the second block is what I have in my serial number is 267 I think 35 and then two other numbers and mine has a small b on it on top of the ordinance flaming bomb. And also the site is hidden the name but you can see Underwood and my barrel is Underwood January 1944. I've had a lot of people to tell me it's fake but what it really boils down to is they just don't want to pay for it. lucky me..

Also they made about 58,000 of them right in there so the question is how many got destroyed how many still in a foreign country the answers are unknown to the questions.
