PART 1 of 2: The M1 Garand appeared on the world stage at a critical crossroads in world history. If it had been a poor design, it was be nothing more than yet another forgettable footnote of World War II as the Allies stood against Axis aggression. But the Garand, a brilliant design of John G. which dominated the competition, was much more. It was easily the best and most influential battle rifle of the war. The Garand provided US forces with superior firepower, a quick reload, high accuracy, and durability under frozen, jungle, and even desert conditions. In TNP I set out to prove this all for myself and the crew in over five months of extensive and expensive testing of five M1 Garands, hailing from the WW II, Korean, and modern era production periouds. As a former drill rifle to me, I needed to gain expertise in the M1 system. It came readily. Not because I'm something special but because the Garand is easy to master and shoot well. The M1 1 MOA adjustable apertures sights are exceptional even today and we shot successfully to 400 yards on man sized targets with them. Don't expect night capabilities howeve on the M1, it's pure 1930s technology. Other ergonomic considerations such as reloading, sling and accessory considerations, stock fit, and safety actuation are discussed. The two stage trigger is not light but it is predictable and smooth, contributing to accuracy. Quality levels in most Garands is superb: each features a forged steel receiver which, when made today, will push prices to $1600 and above. The black walnut stock has character and is durable. It can absorb and hold Cosmoline/oil weight and retain it however, adding to the package. The weight on this .30-06 battle rifle made out of black walnut and steel is substantial: samples shown weigh from 9.5 to 10.5 pounds. Coupled with heavy ammo that weighs double that of an AR-15/M4 loadout, that's a lot. But the complaints subside when you see how hard it hits. The round defeats many choices of cover that your opponent may stupidly rely upon and the .30-06 power dominates the 7.62x39mm, 5.45mm, and 5.56mm caliber choices. Firepower is limited by modern standards but the eight round en bloc spring steel clips can remain loaded forever and recharging can be fast once practiced. Maintenance with the Garand is generally simple: ensure referenced components are greased/lubed and the op rod spring is sound and the M1 will run near 100% in all weather conditions. Though not a closed action design, I remain amazed at the ruggedness, durability, and resistence to wet weather the Garand action showed in my testing. Accuracy is excellent , targets shown. With good lots of M2 152 gr ball, two Garands showed near MOA groups with iron sights, benchrested shooting at 100 yds. Practical accuracy on the 175 yard steel targets was outstanding. The test subjects are various grades of CMP rifles to include SPECIAL, CORRECT, and SERVICE Grades of Springfield Armory WW II and HRA 1950s rifles. These CMP rifles are available under wide qualification to civilians, shipped direct to your door for reasonable prices. CMP is my top recommended source for your Garand (tell them Nutnfancy sent you) for their value, high integrity documentation, and variety. Other sources exist but exercise care from non-vetted private sourcing, especially if a PARTS CORRECT Garand is important to you. At the time of test and review, TNP purchased the SERVICE GRADE HRA for $625, an exceptional value, worth every penny. Prices will increase, availability will decrease with these Garands in time. In 2012 Special Grades chambered in .308 became available (preferences discussed).

I traded a tricked out Rock River AR-15 for a Korean War Era H&R M1 Garand. Some say it was a stupid trade, but I've been happy with the trade and haven't regretted it one iota.

I live in the UK and will probably never have the opportunity to pull the trigger on one but the M1 is on my bucket list (everyone needs a dream right?). I have a great appreciation for the history and the changes that this weapon brought about. They are works of art in wood and steel.

Have my grandfather's that he brought back from WW2. His sargeant allowed their unit to buy them, bill of sale and all, and he carried it in parades etc... now it just sits in a safe. I've always attributed (maybe incorrectly) the heavy weight allowing me to hardly feel any recoil.

I have never been one to love antique firearms, as I love the new updated technologies. But when it comes to the Garand, I am just in love with this rifle. I cannot explain it, but it is in my opinion one of the most beautiful rifles ever made...

+OutdoorEnthusiast88 CMP still has a couple- inflated M1 prices are the result of people taking advantage of panic buying and uneducated customers. While some out there are indeed worth 1000+, I have yet to see one in person that warrants it. I'd want something matching and original, hopefully original stock and barrel. I only seem to see mixmasters in pawn shops and gun shows...I'm sure the really expensive ones come with tall tales about how they jumped in to normandy too. :) Keep an eye out for them, I got a WWII springfield from 3/45 with mostly matching parts (no original sights, armory stock, replacement magazine parts but the rest spot-on) for $900, and it included about 350 rounds and a ton of bandoliers and clips. -Doodle

+nutnfancy Thanks for the response Tactical Doodle, I'll be sure to keep an eye out. You guys should do a review on the Finnish M39 Nagant sometime. I picked up a 1941 VKT a few months back and the stock has a similar look/feel to that of an M1 Garand plus it shoots 3 inch groupings at 100 yards! Lower recoil, big improvement over a typical 91/30. Check out my KZbin review sometime and let me know if you ever need a loaner :)

NUTN !!! You did quite well with the gun drills. I didn't laugh as you said some might. I was actually quite impressed. Especially since the M1 is a heavy ass rifle. That being said, this is the 3rd time watching this video. I just love this rifle. I have two which are in pristine shape. I can absolutely convey that these two rifles (M1) will not just remain in my collection and never be sold. But, they will be passed down to my kids. Each gets one. And the kids have to promise me they never sell them either. And when the time is right. They pass the rifle to one of their children. The child they believe who is responsible enough to respect and honor my wishes. It has meaning to me since, my grand-farther used the M1 when he was in WWII. I have such an affection for the M1, that one is proudly displayed in case and hanging on the wall. I have a few other guns in a display case too. Like a M16 copy from the Vietnam era, a Tommy gun. And a Walther PPK .380 As well as, a German luger, that's authentic and was carried by a German officer during WWII. I just love shooting the M1. Bugget got is so right...when he said, "these things have soul." How true that is.

I started my experience with the M1 in the same way. Did AFJROTC back in high school and spent a lot of time with M1903s and M1 Garands -cracked more stocks, receivers, and even barrels then I'd like to remember. Years later I bought one through the CMP and my mindset over the rifle is completely different. I've drilled competitively and shot competitively with the rifle and I absolutely love it. For those without one, you should get one as soon as you can from the CMP. Great video Nunt.

I have 2 M1s from CMP. Both are Springfield Receivers and mostly SA parts. Both have milled trigger guards and receivers are dater 1943 and 45. Great rifles and I prefer them to my M1A (M14). I would rather carry rounds in enblock clips in bandoleers then the same number rounds in Mags that require more space and are not disposable (combat) as 8 round clips would be. Carry around 10 empty mags, no fun at all. With practice can be charged in about 2 seconds. I love the Garands, thanks for the review.

i had similar thoughts as you to the Garand thinking "oh yeah it's cool but it's an old fashioned and 8 rounds is crap" but i do like the platform, then i got thinking (mostly because of your videos) "just how many times REALISTICALLY am i going to have to reload this thing under fire, that a magazine is advantageous. got looking further into it and the fact that after these ammo runs i always ALWAYS see 30-06 left on the shelves even after all the "in" calibers are gone... more and more the Garand is looking better and better. 4:12 sums it up for me and bugget's face gives me chills, the soul of the M1 means it WILL be my next rifle

My favorite thing about the Garand is not only has every one I've fired been reliable and accurate as hell, but after putting a hundred rounds through it at a rapid pace, the wood foregrip just gets this just absolutely pleasant, warm, toasty, feel to it--it's the shooting equivalent of a warm security blanket.

"The transfer of such a large number of weapons -- 87,310 M1 Garands and 770,160 M1 Carbines -- could potentially be exploited by individuals seeking firearms for illicit purposes". - State Department Spokesman If a man robbed a Bank of America with an M1 Garand rifle I would personally slap his back and call him Pappy. -Unapologetically, American.

I picked up my SA rifle from CMP a year or so ago. Mine is a 1940 receiver (5 digit). The barrel is dated 1945 and looks pretty good for it's age. I love shooting this rifle. It is deadly accurate at 200m. I am not sure about further out, since my range is only 200. I find it a very very good rifle for the $700. If you are looking for one of these, just get it from CMP and they will deliver right to your door.

No, he was US citizen. He immigrated with his parents at something like 7 years old, was educated here, received his training in arms manufacturing here, worked for a US arms manufacturer, and lived out the rest of his days here. American or Canadian aren't "races". If you want to argue specifics, nobody in the US or Canada, on the North or South American continents, is actually from here. Not even the natives. Same goes for Europe or Asia. We are all of, hard to believe, Mediterranean descent.

I love the M1 Garand. My first shots were when I was 14 with my grandpa's. Even if I can't get a hold of one, I'll probably inherit his. On Call of Duty, yes, I occasionally play it. The M1 was always my favorite. I was able to lay down accurate fire that dropped enemies quickly. Even from a young age with little actual shooting experience, I understood that accurate, quick fire was more important than just spraying bullets

"...like it how it is an would not change anything to improve it"(paraphrased). In other words if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Good luck with that mentality today. NOTHING can be left as it is. I swear companies change and "improve" things for no other reason than to change. "Keeping it fresh" is more important than functionality or making people learn systems in a departure from what they are accustom to.It's smoke and mirrors marketing for the most part. Thanks for the unbiased, comprehensive review. I have been thinking about getting one of these for a while, but didn't want to spend the money to find out I didn't like it...I think I'm going to go with the Springfield Armory MA9102 M1A, Thanks again. Rich

The M1 rifle was my first fire arm I ever purchased(1993) It is a great weapon. Bought the rifle for ww2 reenacting(at first) then got into comp/shooting. My rifle has had many many blank rounds run thru it before I started comp/shooting. Blanks are bad for any weapon, however the garand can take a beating. A friend talked me into taking my well worn battle weapon to a match. The old garand earned my respect again. worked flawless. I couldn't believe it. Placed 3rd overall. And thats against more than 1 national match garands.Only 1 weapon surpasses the M1. The M1A. but thats it. Every freedom loving American should be required to have one.

I just bought a M1 Garand for $1500 with a lot of ammo and clips. I'm so excited. It is a SA version and the stock seems to refurbished and in excellent shape from CMP during or a NRA edition. Made around 1945 May-June era. The owner didn't specify and doesn't have the certificate, sadly. So we aren't sure what grade it is, but we all loved it. Sigh... Now to wait...

I've read in several accounts that soldiers would keep empty clips to "ping" and try to entice the enemy to charge...

Great video, it's nice to see a well running Garand. Can't wait for part 2, will you be going into support gear at all? I've seen some modern chest rigs and pouches for enblocs, but a low budget way is using a m203 vest. You should have picked up a .308 Garand, cheaper ammo, with the same enbloc clips.

Another outstanding video. I've been a Garand fan for a long time. It was also cool to see the old footage of you doing drill in JROTC. I spent 4 years in JROTC myself and that footage brought back some great memories. We used 03A3 Springfields. I still remember my weapon serial number almost 20 years later. Please keep up the good work.

Nutn got a question for you: If you could have only one old school battle rifle what would you choose? M1 Garand, Mosin, Mauser?

My father willed me his M1 Garand. Hangs in my home office (I'm scared to death someone will steal it, but the trade-off is that I think of my father every time I see it). It is by far the favorite gun of my collection. I love looking at it and shooting it. It is bequeathed to my son, and will go on for generations to come. Love It.

As usual, outstanding work. Informative, intellectually stimulating, and entertaining. And to all of you guys complaining about the length and the detail of Nutnfancy's work, a question for you: how many videos, how many subscribers, and how many views do you have?

why don't you put a camera by the target so we can see the shots impacting? :)

The M1 is usually in .30-06 Springfield and was designed in the 1930s. It is loaded through the topic with an 8-round clip. The M14 is in .308 Winchester (7.62mm NATO), and was designed in the 1950s, based on improvements to the M1 design. It is loaded through a 20 round box magazine.

May I ask your input on the following? Maybe a stupid question, but where does the gas go after it has caused the oprod to start moving backward? Is there a hole through which it can exit the cylinder? Or is it simply a matter of the pressures in the cylinder and the barrel evening out through the gas port? Thanks for your help! Herman

I'm a 1st year in AFJROTC but I do wrestling so I couldn't be on the rifle team. My school used to have the M1s but 1-2 years ago we had to replace them w/ the 1903s (those stupid cuts got us). The M1 Garand is a beautiful rifle and I wish I had one or at least got to see them at school. You spinned rifles like a boss and just earned a new TNPer.

I got a feeling this is gonna be an EPIC series Nutn! So glad to finally see it. Love the M1, this brings me back to my own AFROTC days when we ran them in Drill Team too. Just loved doing our routines for competition or for demos to school groups (kids loved it!) or doing honor/color guards. I always preferred having a rifle in HG, rather than a flag :) Great part 1 dude, can't wait for part 2!

Learned a great deal about this weapon. Do not own one, but I respect the platform. I bet it was a hoot to shoot this video. Nice job.
