Hey Nutn I run the M1 down in South Florida. Lots of humidity. The garand comes hunting with me as well. I haven't had any rust problems yet. Seems to run quite well in the everglades. Just keep it wiped down with a synthetic oil and all has been well.

My grandpa served in the british army. And had his part in operation market garden. After his lee enfield failed to fire..he became friends with US GI,s and he was given a Garand rifle..with the garand he killed 8 germans. Too him it was the finest weapon ever. Grandpa still had the garand till his death in 2002

I received my Garand in the 80's from the DCM. My best day shooting it was with several other guys. We were out on some BLM land shooting mostly pistols. One-guy pulls out a Garand, another guy pulls out his, a third guy has his. I look over, see three Garands, and just so happens, I have mine. We had a steel target hanging at 300 yards... we stand shoulder to shoulder and bang the hell out of that steel, I think we each hit it at least 6 out of 8 times. That was epic. I love my Garand.

At 16, my first rifle was an M1 Garand, i had to search high and low to find a good example I could afford as a dishwasher, but when I found it, I didn't think twice. A lovely piece, and the sentimental value is through the roof. Accurate as hell and I have never seen it fail when I did my job, a great rifle for anyone.

Good vid. Thanks! If someone hasn't already mentioned it, greasing the bolt's stud and the corresponding raceway in the oprod in other than dusty/sandy environments improves operating reliability. My M1A's bayonet was more than a cosmetic accessory after Katrina. I believe the cold steel made potential looters more uncomfortable than the rifle itself.

My 2nd Garand was a tanker/bastard in 308. Sarco offered a parts kit a couple a years ago of Italian pieces. After using that kit I have a full length 308 Garand. What a sweetheart, and 308 surplus is reasonable in price. Would I convert a quality 30/06 Garand to 308? No. But the 308 unit allows me a lot for tie with my favorite rifle design.

If you reload for the M1 Garand, use a medium or fast burning powder. IMR 4064 and IMR 4895 works great. You don't need to spend $45 on a cartridge belt. Use the M-16 mag pouches and cut those little nylon divider strips out. you can fit 8 loaded en blocks per pouch.

I bought mine at a mom & pop gun store, it is a parts frankengun that had a bad receiver; it came apart on the first round. I kept the thing in that condition for 10 years or so and finally took it down to a gun show where I bought a reconditioned Springfield (Aug. 1942) receiver and had a garand guy (not THE garand guy) put it together. He told me that the rest is Danish post war w/a BAR barrel. You're right about its "soul" I feel more of an emotional connection to it than any other rifle.

If you are looking for a decent rifle, for a decent price,then I would recommend the Remington 770. The 770 is a cheaper version of the Remington 700, made to be good for the less serious hunters. the rifle has an MSRP of $460 but I got one new for $300. It is also available in many different calibers, they are as follows: .243 Win, .270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm-08 Rem, .308 Win, 30-06 Sprg ,and .300 Win Mag. If you have any more questions please reply and i will do the best to answer them.

Is it safe to shoot WalMart commercial .30-06 ammo out of the M1 Garand? Even if it's over 150 grain? Thanks, I've heard that upgrading the gas tube is the key but I'm looking for confirmation that indeed once replaced, you can shoot any kind of .30-06 ammo, in the world, regardless of grain count.

Nutnfancy another thing that happened was in the field and sent them to Ordnance units.At the Ordnance units they often took the Garands recovered from the battlefield and rebuilt them. They weren't always worried about making sure each rifle had matching parts, their worry was having a serviceable rifle for combat.
@p38pilotdk0112 жыл бұрын
Different loads may bend the operating rod from my limited understanding. Different powders with different burn rates is the big issue. The Garand was designed to use a specific powder hence the non adjustable gas system. You can get adjustable gas plugs to solve the problem. I've got to order my M1 yet.
@deepsouthredneck110 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't want a bayonet that long in a cold steel fight. A thick long single edged bayonet is going to be difficult to extract due to over penitration. After ww1 most bayonets became shorter and double edged for this reason.

An Old-Friend carried the Garand in the Korean War. He said when the troops had cover, they would lay-out the clips in front of their self, for FAST-Reload. He said when people are shooting at you, you could Reload that M1 Garand "So Fast" that it sounded almost like a Full Auto! Also, one thing Not Talked about is "When your shooting at a Bad-Guy" you can Shoot-Through a 24 inch. Tree and Kill the Bad-Guy (Using AP ammo ) / All in All a Great Viedo here !

If you want to tighten up your groupings with surplus ammo, clean it all before you shoot it. I run all my surplus M2 Ball through my Thumbler Tumbler using corn cobb media and a little bit of Flittz ammo polish for about 8 hours. Firing through my M1 with a brand new Criterion barrel cut my group sizes in half after cleaning the ammo. I shoot surplus Greek and Korean M2 ball and point of aim has never changed.

Great video as always! I'm surprised you didn't mention (or maybe I didn't catch it) that this rifle is one of the very few center fire rifles that is (I believe) legal everywhere in the US. For New Yorkers, I think that this is and maybe the mini 14 are it. I live in Nevada luckily, but it would be neat if you did a video on tactical guns for people stuck in places like NY or CA.

"Stuck" in ny is right! Ny is bad enough, but nyc is just rediculous! Two seperate (in some ways) entities. Nyc is it's own little empire with it's own laws, rules and regulations that don't necessarily pertain to the rest of this state.

People complain about the 8 rd capacity.But they forget the Garand was up against rifles that generally only held 5 rds.Also tactics were different in the "pre-assault rifle days".Eight rds as fast as you could pull the trigger was a huge advantage in those days.Also the Prone Factor.,when people are shooting back ,you cant get low enough.With the low profile of the Garand you can just about get "pancake flat".Something you cant really do with the hi-cap mags that rifles have today.

I have couple of observations based on my M1. The repo bayonets blades are some form of stainless steel. When I am carrying my rifle for ranch purposes I use the M1 carbine belt pouch, which carries 2 M1 Rifle clips in place of the 2 15 rounds of the carbine. I also have an OIongapo stock pouch ( Think M1 carbine stock pouch on Steroids) that carries 2 additional en-bloc clips on the stock. Thanks for the review I loved watching both of them

Most commercial 150 and 165 grain is safe, 180 grain is the danger zone, the key to shooting heavier loads is an upgraded gas plug, either a 'vented' design (Shuster) or a ported design (GarandGear).

BTW, I've read stories (I believe it was in The American Rifleman) that during the Korean conflict, when it got to -40 degrees and worse, the troops had to make sure that the Garands were absolutely stripped of ALL lubrication, because it would actually freeze and cause the rifle to malfunction. Even grease would freeze. The only way they could keep them firing was to strip them dry of any and all lube. Don't know how long they would have lasted long term though. God bless those guys.
