The Garand most definitely was. The only contemporary rifle that was comparable was the Russian SVT-40 which, in design, was actually far superior and closer in capability to the later M14. Where the SVT-40 fell short was in production tolerances, which led to some reliability issues; accuracy was still comparable with a Garand, though. The Russians also didn't have nearly enough for everyone, and had to stop production in 1942 in order to mass-produce Mosin Nagants to ensure every soldier had SOMETHING.

I just want to point out that M1A is, other than a cartridge difference, the rifle that Garand designed in the 30s. The 8 round en bloc clip was an ingenious engineering solution to the War Department's insistence that box magazines (a la BAR) were not to be used.

The BM 59 is the rifle that Garand designed in the '30s but in 7.62x51 with a box magazine (in fact, a lot of early BM 59s were converted Garands). The M14/M1A, on the other hand, is not. The gas system and other components were messed about with in ways that ridiculously delayed development, vastly inflated costs, and eliminated commonality of parts. That's why the M14, despite being generally considered a fine rifle in itself, was an obsolescent mistake *as a wide-issue infantry rifle* when it was adopted.
@nerdyengineer79434 жыл бұрын
@@jic1 Not disagreeing with you there. I mean in it's layout and high level design it's substantially similar to the Garand, which rifle was originally supposed to have a detachable magazine. After learning how to shoot a .22LR target rifle with micrometer adjustable aperture sights, on an indoor range (12 high schools in town had indoor ranges) at 50 ft, from prone, sitting, kneeling, with sling support, and standing, for two school years, our two teams of 4 got to get on a bus and shoot the National Match Course on a Army training Camp with 200, 300, and 600 yard lines, at 10'x10' target frames which were raised and lowered, (marked with 3"disks so the shooter could see the hit without a spotting scope) in a place called "the pits" the crack of the bullet passing over your head telling you to lower the target and mark it, then raise it. The Lake City ammo was free. So the 600yrd target was 48"D, and the x ring was 6"D, or 1 MOA and some rifles could do that with match ammo. Now ammo is so good, and hunting rifles, and optics, I saw a fella shoot 1/2 MOA with a Rem 700 with hunting bullets, out of the box. This was a hold over from WWII training. IIRC the course was 10 rounds rapid fire (1 min) prone (from standing up) then 10 rounds standing slow (10 min) then move back to 300 for sitting, ten rounds, then back to 600 for 20 rounds prone slow (20 min) Total possible score of 500 points, 50x. We were shooting at bulls eyes which were sized to be the same size as the front sight blade when sighting and marked with scoring rings, the smallest being the x ring. At that time I weighed 115 lbs, 5'10" stringbean HS Junior, and the recoil in prone would shift me off target center, if I used the regulation position, so I had to get my body in line behind the gun. After 20 rounds on the 600 yrd line, I had a headache. Senior year my Dad bought a National Match prepared M-I Grand (thats what we called it, because it was indeed "Grand"). I got to shoot that with free ammo as well. most marked NM. Then we got to go to Camp Perry Ohio where they had the National Matches. This video brought back the smell of 20 rifles shooting 200 rounds of .30 cal in one minute, on the line on a summer day in Indiana, in 1970 something, when I was hot shit. This comment is by way of saying thanks Paul, and thanks Dad, and thanks Major Wilhelm - who was coach, bus driver, and source of free Lake City NM. (Who took responsibility for us kids - or were we young men?) Not all issue M-1s were accurate. Same with M-14 (what we called it). Most needed glass bedding of the stock and NM barrels and op rods and sights and triggers. You had to take care with the flash suppressor of the 14, was the only difference to me. In the Marines I qualified with a M-16 that had a trigger little better than the Dasiy Red Rider I started with - thanks to Mom and Dad for cocking that for me when I was not yet strong enough, and supplying me with B-B's for years. (still have that one too) If people spent as much time training as they do talking about (The Best Whatever), they would be shooting as good as Paul, or better may be. Get to know the trigger of one rifle, one that won't make you develop a flinch with recoil, that's my way. Shooting fast is not my way. Hitting the target center, every time, or holding off, is my way. Steel and wood and aperture sights is my way. Staying out of fights, gun or otherwise is my way. True, I may not survive some situations where you would with no problems, cest la vie. Gotta know your own limitations. Gotta keep training to know. Good Luck America.

With everyone staying home, you’ll need to produce many more videos for us to watch...it’s a crisis! I’d enjoy a video comparing the M1911A1 to a Browning HiPower, both in original military configurations and then as modded for concealed carry (like a late model Kimber CDP or similar vs. a BHP Mk III with Novak’s or Heinies, improved hammer, and mag disconnect hazard device removed). Kind of a dual comparison, between the guns as issued and maximizing their potential for defensive carry. Perhaps that is a bit much and involved, but I think the topic is interesting. Everyone knows how the designers name was pronounced but the rifle has always been pronounced "Gar-And" even from the very beginning in the original training films. Since most of those soldiers went through hell and many paid the ultimate price, they have earned the right to pronounce it any way they want. Also according to the Garand Collectors association, Garand's family does indeed pronounce the family name in the Americanized pronunciation like the rifle "Garand" and always has. John himself pronounced his own name with the Canadian pronunciation but he always just called his rifle "The M1 Rifle".

@FALPhil4 жыл бұрын
@@blueharley2 Keep in mind that because of the long operating rod, you typically don't shoot 30-06 to its full potential in a Garand because if you do, you will ruin the op rod. This is the reason the velocity comparison with the military ammo gave the M1A the edge. I competed in NRA Highpower Match for several years with a Garand (shows how old I am). For most of that time, I handloaded my match ammunition. There are only a handful of powders with burn rates that are safe for Garands, and when you get over 165 grains for the projectile, you must be especially careful. The "safe for Garand" loads are often 200-250 fps slower than the 30-06 loads I hunt with in my bolt-action hunting rifle.

I was introduced to the Garand in 1954. We were taught to load it by locking the bolt back and then while holding the bolt back with the heel of the right hand, to shove the eight round clip into the chamber. It was important to remove the right hand quickly once the clip was in place.

The Longest Day best long movie! Better than Dances With Wolves! Fite ME!
@WanlaceYates4 жыл бұрын
I was looking for that method also. Do not load a Garand the way shown here. There is a high risk of the bolt slamming on the thumb and breaking it. Hold the heel of the right hand against the forward curve of the operating rod handle while pressing down on the clip with the thumb of the same hand. The op rod handle will kick the hand out of the way before the bolt can slam it.
@1337penguinman4 жыл бұрын
The one where the heel of the hand is resting on the charging handle so it provides a stop, right? A lot of modern shooters don't like it because it goes against the current mantra of leaving your firing grip in place. The problem there is that the M1 was designed in the old ways and with bolt action shooting techniques in mind. Modern shooting techniques have more in common with submachinegun tactics than rifle marksmanship.
@carsonburkholder15484 жыл бұрын
@@WanlaceYates According the CMP manual that came with my Garand, as long as you are maintaining downward pressure on the enbloc/rounds while loading, the bolt will not come forward. It's only once you release pressure that the bolt can come forward. What ends up happening, is people let up on the pressure without moving their thumb out of the way at the same time, which can result in "Garand thumb". The manual recommends "flicking" your thumb up, forward, and outward as you release pressure on the enbloc to avoid the bolt. So far, it seems to be true, but I still use the hand against the handle method, like you mentioned, just in case.

@visageliquifier36364 жыл бұрын
That's one I did not know of, so I can say Wikipedia agrees! I somewhat recognized the rifle, as it was used in some significant engagements, but I never looked in to its loading system. Clip systems seemed to be popular in the late 18s/early 19s. To the best of my knowledge, the most likely to still be in use today is some version of the Bofors, an open bolt autocannon used in a variety of roles, but notably for air defense on US warships during WWII in a dual-mount 40mm configuration. I am not sure if any are still deployed in their hopper-loader configuration, however at least during WWII, each barrel had a dedicated loader who would drop clips of shells in to the loading hopper.

Spiffy. Thanks for the info. I enjoy the idea of a weapon fed by a magazine of clips. It makes sense, but on its face that's a phrase that can melt a few heads.
@carsonburkholder15484 жыл бұрын
If you want to get really technical, it's actually not a clip, it's an enbloc. The stripper clip that Chuck used to reload the mauser would be a true "clip". If I have my facts straight, the difference is an enbloc encases (at least partially) the rounds, and is inserted into the rifle, used as a part of the feed system, and ejected after the last round, where as a clip only holds the rims of the rounds, is not usually inserted into the rifle (there are a few exceptions), and is simply a device used to hold rounds (not a part of the feed system) and load a magazine (usually fixed, but some times also for detachable as well). To put it simply, an enbloc is the magazine (or at least an essential part of it), and a clip is used to load a magazine, but is not necessary for it's function. Then a charger (check out swiss straight pull rifles), is basically a clip that encloses the rounds instead of just holding onto the rims. However, the term "clip", in reference to the enbloc, especially the Garand enbloc, is usually considered to be correct terminology, and only a technical gun nerd like me would say otherwise. I also may not have all my facts completely straight, but that is my understanding of the differences between the two.

@ DBL - German Army doctrine was to base the infantry squad around the machine-gun, in their case the superb MG34 and MG42 GPMGs. U.S. Army doctrine was able to adopt the greater mobility of fire-and-maneuver tactics - to a greater extent because of the firepower of the M-1 Garand rifle. It spread the firepower out to a greater extent. And in the Pacific against bolt-action rifle armed Japanese infantry, it was not uncommon for platoon-sized units to hold out against company-sized or larger formations thanks to their superior firepower and the M-1 Garand, as well as the various SMGs and also the excellent BAR.
@garyfullmer4353 Жыл бұрын
Speaking of the Pacific and the troops holding off much larger groups of Japanese prisoners reminded me of an interview of a soldier who fought on Iwo Jima. He remembered being able to sleep better in your foxhole because everyone would sleep with their 1911 in their hand cocked and ready to go so all they had to do was flip off the thumb safety and come out of the foxhole firing. The bolt action welding Japanese were many times overwhelmed by the withering amount of fire four guys and a fox hole could throw down with their pistols. I know this video is about the M1 but I thought that was an interesting comment on the fighting In the Pacific. All of our semi-autos and fully automatics really won the war for us. We were the only country that I know of too put a automatic weapon in the hands of every troop and two weapons for those who had a pistol as well. And by the end of the war most had a pistol.

After a an hour or so of instruction(something she wasn't getting from her unit) on the sight in range and 30 rounds for practice she shot 36, expert.

Fantastic presentation! The best I have seen especially on what has often turned into a rather heated debate among gun enthusiasts. I will be sharing this, thanks for the video.

Great side by side comparisons! I always favored the M-14 over the M-16 in the mid 80's. The M-14 DID replace (6) Weapons Systems in the 50's (1. M1 Garand .30-06/7.62x36; 2. M1903 Springfield .30-06/7.62x36; 3. M1 Carbine .30/7.62x33; 4. M3 SMG - Sub Machine Gun .45 ACP; 5. M1928 Thompson .45 ACP; and 6. BAR - Browning Automatic Rifle .30-06/7.62x36), but McNamara and a few others preferred "Suppressive Fire" over "Marksmanship" which paved the way for the smaller, lighter cartridge. The 7.62x51 has always been my favorite go-to round. There are lots of stats from Vietnam on the lethality of each cartridge, and there is no comparison with the 7.62x51 winning. I own a Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM16, and Love the weight, balance, and speed of the rifle over any AR platform, and have outshot them. I still have to train with the AR platform as a Tactical Paramedic, but ALWAYS choose the M1A. No Optics needed!

Suppressive fire wasn't the only reason for the replacement. 5.56 is cheaper and easier to mass produce, the m16 and 5.56 are lighter and more compact so the average soldier can carry more ammo and equipment for long missions and/or patrols, the firefights almost never exceeded more the 50 yd in Vietnam, it's and easier system and caliber to train people who have never used a firearm in their life, "lethality" just like "stopping power" is not a quantifiable term that can be measured, and the wooden frames of the m14s started to rot in the swamps and jungles of Vietnam. These are just a few reasons why the switch was made in Vietnam.

Fire superiority - ie. suppression and maneuver - was already US Army doctrine in WWII. McNamara and plenty of others were only responding to the rise of the intermediate cartridge (e.g. 8mm Kurz and 7.62x39) and the accompanying updates to doctrines of fire and maneuver that the weapons allowed. Full size battle rifles were indeed designed for marksmanship, but at ranges that simply did not happen all too often on the modern battlefields of the 20th century. Either the range was too close and the weapons proved unwieldy and with slow rate of fire, or the distance was appropriate but targets were too difficult to find with the naked eye. Perhaps the pendulum did swing too far in that suppressive fire became seen as the goal rather than the means to allow maneuver to bring effective fire upon the target.

It may have officially replaced those but it didn't in reality all of those were still in service much later. Although the M1 Carbine was mostly replaced with the M2 Carbine by then and the M1928 Thompson had been replaced with the M1A1 Thompson with a very few M1928A1s still around. The M1903 was in service until 1975 as a marksman rifle shockingly.

My favorite part of the video was when Paul called himself an "average shooter" lol.

I think what he meant is within the prospect of the person being expertly trained in that specific weapon, or in their overall ability as a Marksman. which if you searched around a little the see some examples of people who are terrifyingly good in their overall ability to sling bullets down range.
