In this video i am restoring a m1 helmet that I found. It was in 1980s paint and has no stress fractures. I wanted to make it a navy helmet for my upcoming navy impression that I will do a video on soon.

Good job. One of the better cork and paint jobs I've seen. Well done.

pro tip, blow the cork off of your hand to get the sides nice and even.

That's what I did on mine. However I did not strip the paint and tbh he shoulda opted for some other, stronger, thinner.

One of the biggest problems with refinishing helmets is the cork. It's almost always too coarse and it's clumped up too much. Take your cork, put it into a heavy plastic bag and beat the crap out of it with something heavy. Squish it with something heavy and grind it to about half the size you think it should be. It should almost be a regular sugar grain size. trust me, paint will build it up to a bigger size as you see here. Blowing it on with canned air from a distance of about a foot or so will give you a more even coat.

Who and how did the chin strap get put on?

To be a truly Navy painted helmet, use too much paint and slop in on in a careless manner. Use a brush that's too big and leave lots of runs and brush strokes. Make sure to get some on the chinstraps, too.

Back then lead paint was king they would throw these in the oven to cook after painting and corking

is there a name for the shade of blue?
@reenactmentdays5891 Жыл бұрын
Not sure, I went to my local museum ship and asked what color they used for the helmets and they gave me a little piece of paper with the color and I had it color matched at Lowe's. From what I've seen helmets could be blue, gray or just green. It was really whatever extra paint they had on board so colors varied.
